2013 Best Online Broker Survey – Is Your Stock or Options Broker in the Top 10

Barron’s has released their 2013 broker survey and it was good to see that most of the online brokers I use and recommend made the list. What’s interesting is the continuing shift towards mobile trading, particularly on the iPad and other tablet devices, which are being used by more and more investors for their online trading needs. You can see this reflected via the mobile rating in the table below.

2013 Barron's Broker Rating

The Barron’s list is generally considered the industry standard and if your broker is not in the top 10, I would definitely consider switching or at least opening a free account to test drive the services of the top brokers. A number of top brokers on the list also have some great promotions when you open a new account. This includes:

OptionsHouse - New customers can get 100 Commission-Free Trades when they open and fund an account at OptionsHouse. So whether you already are an experienced trader or have dreams of becoming one, OptionsHouse has among the best offerings.

E*Trade - E*Trade 360 customizable platform lets you put together a trading and investing dashboard with your favorite items displayed. Also has great education resources for both the novice and experienced trader. New or switching customers can trade free for 60 Days to test drive the platform and trading tools.

TD Ameritrade -  Trade free for 60 days + Get up to $600 is the promotional offer from TD Ameritrade, who have a wide range of technology that brings the world to traders and investors of every experience level. TD Ameritrade’s mobile apps, especially for the iPad, are very well-designed. There are quite a few research amenities freely available to TD Ameritrade customers that you would pay extra for at other firms.

tradeMONSTER - Is Barron’s top-rated Web-only broker this year, earning 4½ stars. They have a couple of promotions targeted at different types of traders. If you are an options trader or want to become more active in this space, you may want to sign up for their $0.50 option contracts. If you just want to just try out their service consider this promotion that will allow you to trade commission free for 30 days. Options traders will find a wealth of terrific analytic and trading tools here, and those not yet into options will appreciate the education that guides you to the appropriate trading strategies.
