2018 Tax Season Open and IRS Tax Refunds Being Processed (or Not)

The IRS has officially announced that the 2018 Tax season is now open. This is in line with our earlier published schedule of key 2018 tax filing dates. April 17, 2018 is the tax deadline – excluding extensions and for non-resident filers. With more than 155 million returns to be filed this year (greater than 90% being done electronically) the number one question most tax payers are asking is, “when will I get my refund?” The schedule below shows an estimated refund schedule chart for the upcoming tax year that should help answer this.

The IRS expects more than 70% of taxpayers to get tax refunds this year. Last year, over 110 million refunds were issued, with an average refund of $2,895. More than 90% of eligible refunds were paid in less than 21 days. Start your tax filing and refund processing for free with TurboTaxH&R BlockTax Act or E-file

The above dates are estimates only and should only be used as a guideline for your refund processing and payment date. Tax situations vary greatly by individual and per the 8,000+ comments in this article from last year, there could be many reasons for tax refund payment delays. Especially with increased security checks over the last few years to prevent tax identity fraud. Feel free to leave a comment and I am sure you will get an answer from the Saving to Invest Tax community.

Note that for tax filing this year none of the Trump tax breaks will be in effect. They will be applicable from next year.

  • Let's hope this year is better than the past couple of year

  • My return was accepted by the IRS on 1/17. It was accepted on 1/12 last year and was in my account on 2/19 so I hope this year is the same.

  • Good job. You used Plain English instead of the Garbagelese most sites slide into.

  • I filed mine on the 23rd of Jan they were accepted on the 24th. I keep seeing the dates change for direct deposit it says I'll get mine by the 19th of Feb

  • IRS-website states refund will be sent to my back on 2-14 , I know last year there were some issues... anybody have any delays from the date the IRS stated it would be there?

  • I file on Jan 30 2018 and accepted and I have the path act and now it’s saying on feb 16 2018 on the where my refund that it is being processed and there is no ddd so when should I get my federal in Massachusetts

  • I filed on 1/29 and it still says in process. I called and she said that the IRS will take until the 2nd week of April to process. No explanation as to why. Can anyone advise? I’ve been audited before and it was a total nightmare I’m so scared of that happening again. I always use turbo tax but from now on I think I’ll go with an accountant or tax professional I can’t stand this stress

  • Anyone get their refund after almost 5 weeks with the code 152 as well as getting letter in the mail?

    • I filed January 29th and still haven't gotten mine. Yes code 152 and have been told many lies from the IRS! Yes I received a letter. I called and asked if I was being audited and was told "absolutely not". They had no reason for the delay and when I pushed the issue the guy on the phone said he wasn't going to argue with me! If we owed the IRS money we couldn't just say "oh I'm sorry you'll need to wait an additional 45-60 days to get your payment". Why should we tax paying citizens have to wait for our money. Something is going on and we deserve the truth! It's time we stand up for ourselves. I've contacted the media and encourage others to do the same. I've NEVER in almost 40 years of filing taxes ever had an issue with my refund! This is all TRUMPS doing!
