2024 Update on Stimulus Check & $900 grocery Benefit for Seniors, Retirees, Veterans and the Disabled

[Latest Stimulus Check Update for Seniors] While multiple rounds of stimulus payments have been made over the last two years, many are asking if the government will make another (4th round) of payments to help folks cope with higher inflation and the rising costs of basic goods and services.

$900 grocery stimulus for seniors

While there is no actual stimulus, there are supplementary grocery benefits available via the Food Assistance for Older Adults programs via medicare advantage plans, that can provide up to $900 for seniors in qualified groceries.

Along with the 2023 SNAP increases and pandemic emergency allotments (which end in March 2023), this should reduce food insecurity amongst our older population.

Approximately 5 million, or three out of five seniors who qualify to receive SNAP are missing out on benefits.

4th Stimulus Check for Seniors in 2023?

See this article for the past and potential stimulus check payments, including those for seniors. It covers how prior ones were paid, and when or if another round of payments will be made in the coming months.

At this stage no new stimulus checks are being issued by the federal government, but some states are sending inflation relief payments.

[Prior/old updates] Congress officially nixed a one-time payment of $250 in 2010 to Social Security recipients who haven’t received cost of living adjustments (COLA) since 2008.  The cancellation of a $250 SSI payment in 2010 was justified on the basis of low inflation (see update below). But many seniors are feeling the pinch of inflation, especially around medical services — a big-ticket item for seniors. Many believe that the $250 payment would have been a good economic stimulus payment, since there’s a good chance that most of the $250 would be spent immediately.

While many seniors could easily survive without the $250, there are also millions of seniors who are struggling to make ends meet (just see the comments below in response to this article), particularly if they have high medical or disability costs. Congress really should have found a way to provide the $250 SSI payment to those seniors who truly need the money, instead of tax cuts for the super-rich.

[Update Nov 2010] The Social Security administration recently announced that there would be no 2011 COLA increase, meaning the monthly SSI payments in 2011 would remain unchanged for the second year in a row. Clearly our senior citizens are being hit hard, which places more pressure on Congress to approve a 2011 Bonus SSI payment (supported by the Obama administration). With the hundreds of comments on this topic, people are clearly upset about not receiving the bonus SSI payment or a COLA increase yet again.

Fortunately, Ways and Means Social Security Chairman Earl Pomeroy recently announced that the House will take up the Seniors Protection Act when Congress reconvenes later this year [this measure was quashed]. The Seniors Protection Act of 2010 will provide a $250 payment to about 54 million Social Security recipients. Congressman Pomeroy introduced the bill, H.R. 5987, in July, and has since worked to ensure that this bill will be enacted before the end of the year. Congressman Pomeroy received assurances today from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and Ways and Means Chairman Sander Levin that this bill will be brought to the House floor and passed when the House reconvenes in November

Individuals receiving Social Security benefits have seen everyday expenses for drugs, medical care, utilities, housing and food increase while Social Security benefits have remained unchanged. Seniors and others receiving benefits face ongoing struggles to meet these costs given the modest level of their benefits, amounting to only $14,000 annually, on average.

“In this economy, seniors are struggling to make ends meet,” Congressman Pomeroy said. “Passing this bill will ensure that the lack of cost-of-living-adjustment will not jeopardize seniors’ ability to survive on their benefits. All Members of Congress should join us in supporting this legislation which will be fiscally responsible and upholds our bedrock promise of economic security for our nation’s seniors”

On a related topic, there is still a lot of confusion on past (2008, 2009) one time bonus SSI payments. The Social Security Administration (ssa.gov) site is responsible for making these payments and is where you should check the official status of your missing or late SSI payment(s).

Update : See the recently announced 2011 Social Security Income (SSI) Payments

[June 2010] Unfortunately the Democrat-controlled Senate has rejected a measure by a 50 to 47 vote that would have given seniors a one-time Social Security benefit payment of $250 to make up for the lack of a cost of living increase. The jobs bill, which contained the $250 SSI provision, was rejected despite President Obama’s backing. The payments which would amount to $13 billion, where earmarked in the jobs bill – which was deemed too costly by lawmakers trying to allay their image of big spenders.

The badly needed Social Security payments would have helped 57 million seniors, a risky number to overlook considering the fall elections and how badly incumbent politicians are viewed. This year marks the first time since 1975 that Social Security beneficiaries didn’t receive a cost of living (COLA)  increase, which means an extra one-time SSI payment may become a reality later this year if a new jobs bill is introduced to further extend unemployment benefits or the COLA provision in President Obama’s budget is approved. See this article for the $250 Medicare Gap payment in Obama’s new health care reform package. Also see newly release details on the Tax Breaks and Credits in the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010

[Update Jan 2010] The additional $250 payment in 2010 is now also part of President Obama’s 2011 budget proposal, which means this payment could be received later, rather than earlier, since the budget needs to get congressional approval. Stay tuned for further updates.

Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) introduced the bill (H.R 3557) on September 14, 2009 that would provide the $250 payment in 2010, detailed below, for an emergency Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) for Social Security recipients. The bill has been has been referred to the Committee on Ways and Means for review and should be put to a vote on the Senate floor in the next few months.

[Previous update] President Obama has proposed extending the 2009 economic recovery payment of $250 into 2010 by providing another payment of $250 to retirees, veterans and disabled people already receiving Social Security benefits. This additional payment will potentially be funded via the $787 Billion economic stimulus package and is expected to cost $13 billion in total.

“These payments will provide aid to more than 50 million people in the coming year, relief that will not only make a difference for them, but for our economy as a whole, complementing the tax cuts we’ve provided working families and small businesses through the Recovery Act,” Obama said in a statement.

President Barack Obama is calling on Congress to quickly approve the $250 payments to more than 50 million seniors to make up for no cost of living increase in Social Security next year (according to the SSA which has cited negative inflation this year as the reason).

The new benefit would be $250 – or equivalent to a 2 percent increase in benefits for the average Social Security retiree beneficiary. Under the rules no person could “double dip” and receive a $250 Economic Recovery Payment through more than one program. Nor could they receive both an Economic Recovery Payment and the Making Work Pay tax credit.

The $250 payments would go to those receiving veterans benefits, disability benefits, railroad retirees and public employee retirees who don’t receive Social Security. Like the 2009 $250 payment, the additional $250 social security payment will most likely be paid out by the SSA and not count as income for SSI. To date Economic Recovery Payments have been made to 55 million people including seniors, veterans and people with disabilities and totaled $13.7 billion. Most of the checks were mailed out in May 2009.

To receive the $250 payment, the beneficiary’s address of record must be in a valid US state or territory. Only individuals eligible for Social Security, SSI, Veterans, or Railroad Retirement benefits at any time during the months of November 2009, December 2009, or January 2010 may be eligible for the extra payment. The $250 payment will be delivered in the same way your current Social Security or SSI benefit is sent.

In addition to this legislative proposal, the IRS and the Department of Treasury will take steps this week to prevent reductions in the amounts that workers can contribute to IRAs, 401(k)s, and other aspects of tax-favored retirement systems in 2010 that some feared could result from negative inflation over the past twelve months.

  2. I am on disability because of two strokes and 2 heart attacks. If were not for my children I could not make it. I was denied food stamps because they say I make to much($532 a month), out of that I have mortgage payment, phone, lights and my meds,(did not quaifily for prescription drug plan) ususally have about $5.00 left a month for grocery. I go to the health department in town because I get medical care for free and the doctor there fixes it so I can get my meds on the $4.00 plan at Wal-Mart.
Those up there in Washington D.C.(government officals), should try to live off what some of get, they would not be able to make it. I know there are people that get less than I do and they are struggling also.
Some one up there needs to start taking care of the low income, and those on Social Security/Disability. WE ARE IMPORTANT ALSO,NOT JUST THE RICH.

  5. There should be more outrage at what is going on in this country. The Republicans continue to block bills that would help people who are struggling in this country in favor of things like tax cuts for the rich. When are we going to learn that the Republicans are the enemies of the people. They work for the corporations who care about nothing more than greed. They continue to block things that would help the unemployed, the disabled, seniors, the poor, etc. They have created a country where the top 2% continue to get richer and richer while everyone else basically has nothing and can barely survive. Poverty keeps increasing in this country while the rich keeper getting richer and richer. That is all the Republicans care about. It is amazing that there are people who don’t realize this. The Democrats are the only ones who have fought for social security and programs to help those in need. We have these tea party wackos who have no idea what they stand for supprting the Republican party in the name of “capitalism”. What they don’t realize is that all that is is a mechanism to help the rich and keep the corporate greed machine going. Anyone who votes Republican is doing nothing more than voting for CEOs and Wall Street to make more and more billions at the expense of everyone else in this society. I am so disillusioned with this country it is beyond belief. The fact that seniors and disabled people, many of them who have served this country cannot get $250 to help get them through during hard times while these people are voting for tax cuts for the rich is a moral outrage. It is a disgrace and it is ALL the Republicans doing. Anyone who doesn’t realize that has spent way too much time watching FOX News and Glenn Beck. These people couldn’t care less about those who are struggling in this country. All they care about is their own greed and it is about time people were fed up with it. It’s not about voting ALL of them out. I hear that way too often. If you care about your own well being in this country and that goes for everyone, vote the REPUBLICANS out! That is all there is to it. The Republiucans do not care about the average person in this country and they certainly do not care about those who are striggling to get by. All they care about are the rich. They have proven that time and time again. The use this veil of capitalism and they call others “socialists” but it is nothing more than a ploy to get what they want, which is a society where the very few control all the wealth and that is how they vote in Congress. They’re getting what they want too which is a shame because people are too stupid to know any better. This country is in sorry shape because we have lost our moral compass, we have lost our priorities and we have allowed these people to gain too much power. The Republicans should be voted out. All of them should be voted out. I cannot emphasize that enough. Voting Republican is nothing more than a vote for millionaires and billionaires to buy more luxury cars and jet planes and it is a vote against yourself, it is a vote against common decency. Republicans have no soul. They don’t care about you or me or anyone else except the rich who buy their votes. This country has gone to hell because of it. I don’t have much hope that things will change. This is a disgrace and we should all be outraged over it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like many people care and the Republicans continue to ride roughshod over everybody except the very rich. It is a very sad thing that has happened to this country. Stop listening to these people. We all know what they’re about. Vote them out!

      • They are both awful, but there’s only one party voting for things like tax cuts for the rich and unfinanced wars and against helping the unemployed and social security recipients. That’s my point. The whole process is screwed up and it’s easy to just throw your hands up and give up on everyone, but there is a definite lesser of two evils. The Democrats at least care about the average person in this country and those who are struggling. The Republicans don’t care about anybody but the rich.

        • I dont think the Dem s Care” they just have a diffrent way of playing their own Con Game- Not what is Best for the Country all of this is for Votes then to keep them in power- How about the Love for the Country- How Much do you Love your Country when you Kill it with 14 Trillion in Debt- No Stop in them- I agree they should of Passed the 250.00 Help- We are at the Point of Debt” Swimming in Red Ink what is Another 14 Billion- Just Pass it All”

        • Enough. You sound like a tea party nut. We’re not in debt because of the Dems. We’re in debt because of two unpaid for wars and tax cuts for the rich. That’s why we’re in debt. The problem is that the Republicans cure for fixing debt is cutting programs that people need instead of hurting their own which are the rich. You need to start understanding the way things are. If not, keep voting for more of the same. You’ll never get any help.

        • Tea Party is not Nuts. Dont go in to Name Calling Just Silly- Do Agree they should of passed the 250.00- What is Another 14 billion just add it to the 14 trillion By the end of 2012 i bet it will be close to 18 Trillion- Let me Know when the Dems Pay that Off”’

        • This is the last time I’m going to respond to you. Do you realize that the reason why you’re not getting the $250 is because of the Republicans? Do you realize that or do you just enjoy being ignorant? It’s your choice. You can do what you want, but the reason why this country is in such sorry shape is because of people like you. You probably vote Republican because you don’t know any better and are deluded enough to think that they represent your interests, when they could not care less about you and if it were up to them you would get nothing and if they get the chance, they will further hurt social security recipients along with everyone else who is not the top 2% in this country. They depend on people like you who are ignorant and vote against their own interests, so keep doing what you’re doing. You’re not only hurting yourself, but anyone else who needs help from the governement. The tea party is nuts. It’s just a vehicle for the Republicans and people like you don’t even realize it. It’s a disgrace. I’m done talking to you. If you truly believe that the Republicans represent your interests when they are standing in the way of extending unemployment benefits and helping social security recipients than you are completely ignorant and you should not be allowed to vote, but unfortunately everyone in this country gets to vote even if they have no clue what they’re voting for. Maybe you’ll realize it when they completely take your benefits away and get nothing because that is what they want to do and why they vote against giving $250 to people who need it. Their answer is helping the rich get richer and turning their backs on everyone else. It’s too bad that you don’t realize that. They depend on people like you. It’s a shame.

        • SEEMS THAT OBAMA THE GREAT SIGNED OFF ON THE TAX CUTS TOO AS DID MANY OTHER DEMS BOTH SIDES NEED TO LEARN ALITTLE COMPASSION AND REMEMBER WHAT THEY CAMPAIGN ON AND TO REPRESENT ALL THEIR PEOPLE AND NOT JUST TRY TO MAKE THEIR PARTY LOOK GOOD. AFTER ALL BOTH SIDES ARE AMERICANS AND SHOULD TRY TO WORK TOGETHER FOR THE GOOD OF ALL.

        • You Need to calm down talk about sounding nuts. No i dont like the Dems are the Rep would not Vote for any of them- You have Con Game Number 1 with the Rep are Con Game 2 with the Dems- Take a Pass on them Both- I am a independent – I dont call people names like you do- you sound upset- then go to name calling- Must be a Young Teen maybe Seek Anger management Class- Have a Nice weekend Bye

    • I agree wholeheartedly! And we, the “little people,” the ones who produce the products, provide the services, the single most important asset these greedy, evil corporations have, need to realize our importance to these idiots! Slavery was abolished (or wasn’t it)? Do we really have to let these souless nimcompoops continue to use our talents, our time, our dedication to quality to line their own pockets time and time again while they look for even more ways to avoid paying us? Wasn’t that the way the plantation owners treated their slaves? (All the slaves seemed to get was their food, clothing and a roof over their heads while the plantation owners lived in luxury off the results of their slaves’ labor.) Isn’t it time that us “little people” started working for ourselves, retaining the profits from our own labor? I think it is long past time!

    • seems funny the dems are still in control as of now and yet the stimulus still didn’t happen, there is more than enough blame to pass on to both sides , as for millionaires and billionaires I am about as far from being one as anyone can get but I am not so foolish to be envious of them or blame them for our countries struggles, the problem stems from these politicians that go to wash, and forget the simple rules of economics do not spend more than you have.

  6. I cannot express how disappointed I am in not receiving the $250 social security payment. I was looking forward to finally going to the grocery store and maybe buying something special for myself for Xmas dinner and what ever was left to put into a savings account. Why is this country now concentrates entirely on the rich and their issues. Wish I had their problems. Try living on Social Security alone, not able to find work and then having that even taken away from us. I read that the suicide rate for seniors is on the rise. No wonder. This government has not only put us below the poverty level but diminished our self worth and self esteem – Having worked all my life, I feel used, abused and ashamed. Thank you Obama for continuing to ruin my life. I hope you enjoy your holiday.

    • It’s not Obama’s fault. That’s very simplistic. The problem is that he can’t get anything done. The Republicans don’t care about the country. All they care about is making Obama and the Dems look bad so they can get elected and the sad part is that if people don’t realize that, they will and this country will be in worse shape than ever, especially for those who depend on the government.

You know I understand war but I do see if America would keep there nose out of eveyone elses buisness and consitrate on our own country we could pos. accomplish something. You know we get a presedent who actualy really cares about our country and everyone fights and tries to makes it imposibale for him to get any accomplishment done. I think they should just kiss and get along. If they wanted us to help by spending more unless they give a stimulas to the SSI & SS will have not have enough to pay bills let alone buy extras. Look water, elec., trash, rent, car Ins. Everything goes up but nothing comes down, see what is wrong into todays world!!!

But, I believe that the COLA standards need to be re-evaluated. My rent, food, and light bill payments have gone up so how can it be said that there are no cost of living increases. The last time I checked, food, rent and utilities are all costs of living.

It was supposed to create a lot of shovel ready jobs, which it didn’t. Instead, the unemployment rate grew. President Obama told us that unemployment wouldn’t climb above 8%, add one more lie to his portfolio, but you can’t confront Democrats with truth. They can’t handle the truth. Then they pushed the Health Care bill down our throats without even reading because that idiot Pelosi pushed it through too quickly. because it contained one heck of a lot of pork, thanks for the transparency Mr. President! I didn’t vote for him because he has absolutely no experience at running anything. Democrats can’t even balance a budget.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!!!

        • Are you kidding? That stimulus package you’re talking about had a $250 social security payment that you can thank President Obama and the Demopcrats for. The problem with the stimulus bill is that it did not go far enough. Same thing with the health care bill. There should have been a public option and there’s not because once again the Republicans who only care about the billion dollar drug companies blocked it. If you think the Republicans actually represent your interests than you are sadly mistaken. You may think it’s fun to hear the rhetoric and watch FOX News but in reality the Republicans vote against everything that most people in this country need, especially those who are struggling. If you collect social security and you actually vote Republican than you should not be allowed to vote because you’re voting against yourself. The Democrats are the only ones who have fought for social security and other programs to help people. All the Republicans do is fight for the top 2% in this country.

  15. What i dont get they spend so so much money” why is it so so hard to spend 14 billion more so the poor can get some help with the 250.00- For some Reason they think lets cut this and all the Debt is Sloved- If you are going to spend like a Fool then Count everyone at the party then”’ Pass out another 14 billion the ship is sinking anyhow with all the other Junk they spend on””””’

  16. It seems strange, that where my husband and I live, nearly everything has went up in cost, but according to congress, we don’t deserve an increase in COLA or the one time year stimulis payment. Examples: Water bills increased in 2010, and will go up again in 2011. Fuel is about the highest in our nation for both house and autos. Electric power jumped up just after the crash, and is going up again in 2011. We almost lost our home, trying to get our payments down far enough to survive, and now even that payment is such a burden that we can’t even get car parts needed to make our van run better in order to save on fuel, therefore we are limited to very few trips to the nearest town to buy groceries and other needs, because the one and only store in town is too expensive to buy needed goods.

Furthermore, I know that there are many more seniors in our Northern California area that cannot speak up for their needs, because they don’t have the ability to go online like myself and write in a forum like this one in order to let their needs be known. We are ALL STRUGGLING and NO ONE seems to care!

Therefore, I hope the richer congress reads these posts and become willing to help us in 2011. AFTER ALL, SENIORS ARE QUICKLY BECOMING THE MAJORITY, and WE purchase many of the commodities and pharmacy goods, but not if we can’t afford them.

We were really hoping we could finally get just a little help before the end of the year.

SO MUCH FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR!

They stole from the SSA with an IOU note, give me a break. I wonder if I could buy some groceries with an IOU note. How about cutting foreign aid…period, they all laugh at us with all the corruption. Does not the foreign aid around the world add to the deficit, what about the war/s going on, what about all the frivolous earmarks, or is it just the Social Security Administration and Colas that count as a deficit, what a joke. Congress does what it wants under the pretense that it is good for all the citizens. I bet the Congress gets their raises…
Cut the Members of the House and Senate in half. Where does it say we need 535 members, reduce the numbers like all business and corporations. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, practice what you preach.

This is a blow to us all, it shows us they really do not care for the elderly. When a country throws their elderly to the wolfs it is not a good thing.

      • as someone on social security disability i agree with your comment. what happened to republicans who used to believe in social care for the disabled, vets, children, and the unemployed. class warfare has changed the focus from humility to greed, and i fear if people, or should i say sheeple keep blindly following the greed, it will be to our demise. a true society cares for it’s citizens, not for it’s politics, greed and one mindedness. as to those out there who are still humble to thy neighbor, keep giving, keep caring, and keep imparting knowledge-you are what this country truly stands for.

        • thanks jeff. i just can’t wrap my head around 58 million voters being told that 5 dollars a week will destroy our economy, and leave our kids and grandkids with an unfair burden. last time i checked, the unemployed, seniors, and small businesses spend what they receive immediately back into the economy. we are giving the wealthy and big business a huge tax break when they are sitting on 1.7 trillion in surpluses. very little job creation has happened since bush started these breaks, and most businesses have rewarded the middle class with huge layoffs, especially near the holidays, as well as setting up shop in other countries with cheaper labor. i feel bernie sanders from vermont to be a great voice of reason, but his message has been drown out by allowing corporations to be treated as individuals who will eventually buy all our elected officials vote. these newly bought officials will speed up the destruction of our government, the middle class, and all but wipe out the poor and disabled. i hope that all that read this comment take note and do something more than just watch it happen.

  20. Hey guys I am going to get up a GRAY PANTHER meeting over my way and I suggest you all do the same. We need to let them know we aren’t going to take it anymore. Oh it’s the rebuplican’s oh it’s the congress, oh it’s the last president. Well we all know that they get the full paycheck even after they retire, I bet not one democrate turned that down. I believed in Obama. I don’t beleive in any single lying, buck passing, piece of s…. politician in any area of the government any where in this country. They are all out for number one and that in no way includes the common person.

    • I agree with you. They all stink, but if it were up to the Republicans we would get nothing and we would all be on the street. At least the Dems have a soul and fight for ss and other programs. The only reason we probably won’t get this $250 is because of the Republicans. They’re too busy fighting for tax cuts for the rich. The whole process is screwed up though, so it’s hard to feel good about any of them.

I am a 74 yr old woman raising a 16 yr old granddaughter. My husband and I thought we did all the right things, putting back for old age etc. but our insurance was so high we let it go 10 months before medicare kicked in. Then a heart attack took it all. Now my husbands gone and soc. sec. is all I have. The 250 would have at least gave me a choice of a small Christmas or stay warm all winter.

  23. What happened to the assurances by Pelosi and Levin? Just more empty promises. The $250 could have been combined with the new tax extension deal that Congress and the White House just completed. No such luck.

“Congressman Pomeroy introduced the bill, H.R. 5987, in July, and has since worked to ensure that this bill will be enacted before the end of the year. Congressman Pomeroy received assurances today from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and Ways and Means Chairman Sander Levin that this bill will be brought to the House floor and passed when the House reconvenes in November.”

Plus the disable veterans who risked their lives for all to live as we do, and the goverment won’t help them it with a cola or measly $250 one time payment. It makes me sick when i see politians on TV saying how we own vets. for what they sacraficed!! Talk is cheap, and i for one do not believe one word that comes out their mouth!! But when their day comes, they will answer…not to us, but to a higher authority. I’m on S.S. diss. and don’t care about the 250, but the eldely and disable vets deserve it,and they know that!!!!

Anyone who votes for Republicans who continue to support things like tax cuts for the rich while they stand in the way of extending unemployment benefits and help social security reciopients is crazy. Anyone who receives social security and votes Republican should not be allowed to vote because they don’t understand the issues and are voting against themselves. The Republicans are the only reason why we would not get this payment.

  26. They need to give this money. They’re going to give tax cuts for the rich and cut unemployment benefits and not help social security recipients who are struggling to get by? This country is going to hell and capitalism has gone nuts if that happens. People have the nerve to talk about “socialism”. There isn’t enough “socialism” in this country. It’s a word that means absolutely nothing. Capitalism has gone insane and the rich keep getting richer while the poor keep getting poorer and the cost of living goes up. It’s a joke. This country has gone down the tubes and anyone who argues “capitalism vs. socialism” like those tea party wackos have no idea what they’re talking about. Capitalism has gone mad and this country is completely backward and if seniors and disabled people can’t get $250 while the rich fleece the system there is something seriously wrong with what we stand for. That is not “socialism”. It is the right thing to do. Case closed.

  29. I’m a 53 yr who has received SSDI/SSI for many years now, before which I tried to work. (27 jobs where I was gainfully employeed but each and every time could not handle the pressures of employment and the stress of needing to get ready and commute there-drove me nuts and none of the benifits of work could eliviate the distraughtness felt or I’d be working right now). If I was to list some of the labor attempted it would briefly state: Upholstery(auto and furniture), paperhandler(rotogravure press-graveyard), seafood cook, truckstop manager(graveyard), forklift operator(lumberyard), store security, Alarm agert(dispatcher-police, fire, patrol, and medic), desk clerk(YMCA), sugar refiner(beets, not cane), floor care mantainance(Kmart), construction(demolition, etc,) ,groundgkeeping(you name it), bridge mantainance(grinder, primer/painter), tire repair(Winston/Delta), and golf club manufacture(Jerry Barber) so I have tried to work but never really made it to the 3-4 month point.

This is the first time I might have to disconnect my phone service. I always try hard to pay my bills on time, rent comming first, and do not extend myself with luxuries such as cable, but I do choose Internet service so as to keep up with loved ones in far away states as well as what I’m doing now, which is its own ‘stimulus package’.

But lately I’ve felt the finantial hardship and lost control with my bank account and am overdrawn so much that I have rent only after receiving Decs’ benifit, food, etc. will have to arrive of faith.

Still, I went ahead and drank it all up so it’s my own fault,(For a while at least I could forget my situation and laugh and joke with my couple of friends.) Sobriety has settled in. I have no other choice now and with sobriety came the realization that all is NOT as dier as it seems and I will keep my hope and faith more secure and away from my self-disipline, (which went out the window this month due to Moms’ Maine maple syrup birthday gift needing to timely send and the aproaching Christmas gifts wanting to send-(yes, some on disability use some of their benifit on something other than self, at least at times), but a very small income makes for worries in that regard, though sharing of oneself is actually a recognized legitimate expenditure to me; I can not feel right with receiving from them only.

Now, I should never have changed my checking account to alow me easy ATM $ from it..,read: new banking law that pointed out I could do so. I will change that dicision after logging off this comments page.

You wanna talk “president”. How about ‘ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country’. Remember? Though times get rough, tough and I’ve now not enough I will be very thankful for the benifit I receive and qualify medically for(without a need of an atterney, in my case). I might lose my phone I’ve had for 12+ years but like I said..,it’s my own fault.

Please everyone, try to have a happy, merry Christmas or if you’re not Christian, please just allow us to have one without holliday controversies regarding same.

That $250 could be vital to a lot of people and I don’t think the politicians realize it. An extra $250 could really help get me by for a few months. I’m 39 years old and I’m disabled, but I’d like to get off disability at some point and by helping people with this money, they give them a chance to do a lot of things for themslves and feel a lot better and help themselves a lot more. It’s really worth it to help those in need. The way things are now, beyond my rent and bills, I have very little money like a lot of people. It’s not “socialism” to give this payment and help people. It is the right thing to do. There are 60 million retireees, disabled, veterans. etc. and we are all people. I served my country in the Army and now times are tough and it would be nice if the government recognized and started helping out. I think it’s ridiculous that we have not gotten any help in 2 years. Everything has gone up and keeps going up. These are desperate times for a lot of people and the politicians in Washington need to realize that. Just had to say that. Thank you.

  36. I make $912 per month, and I feel like the government just doesn’t care about those of us on disability – or – the senior citizens. I can’t afford my bills – I’ve cut everything I can, taken a roommate, and there’s nothing more I can do to LOWER MY COST OF LIVING…other than to stop living… which really isn’t what I want… I’d like to have some quality of life, I’m only 40. — I may be disabled, but I think all of us deserve to live a life. Sometimes I feel like the government who decided to not give us a raise this year, and / or voted down the $250 – should be forced to live off of what we have to live on. Once I pay my rent, utilities, groceries, and medications that aren’t covered by medical or medicare — I literally have 28 cents left to my name for the rest of the month, every month, (starting from the 4th of each month)… I am so distraught, I don’t know what to do. I don’t qualifiy for other programs, because I “make too much money”. — I’ feel like I’m being FORCED to go back to work and yet, I am not okay to work, nor can I even find a part-time job that is willing to work with me and my needs.

I have had dental problems, – which Medicare doesn’t even cover — and I cannot get help, yet the people on welfare here in California can… I don’t understand. I stood in line in tears begging for help for my teeth, in severe pain, because three of them have chipped and nerves have been exposed… Medical would only pay to pull them. I look horrible now, with three teeth pulled. I look homeless. I spent a lot of money on my teeth when I used to work, literally thousands of dollars… all wasted – and now, am left with problem anfter problem because of my teeth.

I know the “cost of living” is not based on actual cost of living, and from what I understand it has something to do with oil or something — regardless of my memory — it should be based on the real and actual cost of living. Gas prices are at 3.30 a gallon here in Los Angeles, rents are sky rocketing, grocery prices have recently nearly doubled… and our government just doesn’t seem to care… why is it that I feel like they really do not care if we live or die? I guess because they don’t have to live this way. They don’t have to live in their car when they get evicted or a three day notice because they can’t pay their rent… honestly, I’ve done my best to get by, but I just cannot make it on $912 per month with all of the medical needs I have as well as the cost of living and everything else.

I really thought there was hope in the future … when I voted for Obama, I was sooooo hopeful… I thought things were going to get better for those of us on disability and … maybe just maybe we’d have a “New Deal”… kinda like back in FDR’s days… but, I guess it’s more like no deal. — I’ve been hospitalized twice in the past year because I cannot deal with all the loss and difficulties financially – and the hopelessness of it all. I’ve kept my chin up, but it’s just not possible to do much longer.

I just wish President Obama would READ THESE POSTS and actually take them to heart, and hear our pain, and hurt, and heartache. — Because seriously, it seems like we mean nothing to the government, and they’d like us out of the picture completely.

:( I’m tired of not having money to keep the food stocked all month, the gas tank full all month, and the phone getting disconnected or something else getting left behind and disconnected or unpaid – every single month. It’s just too much.

Sorry about the rant. I just need some support.

It is rough out there for people like you and the politicians do seem to be out of touch with reality. I wrote this post about ways to generate passive income and given the way you write I do believe freelancing or even starting your own blog could provide a way to make a few hundred dollars a month. Check these sites out for more detail:

Maybe some of the ideas in these posts can help you. Also, in regards to Dental work you should look for pro-bono dental offers. Otherwise I would seriously consider going to Canada (or Mexico if desperate) to seek dental treatment since medical costs in those countries is much lower.

THEY GET FOOD STAMPS AND SELL THEM FOR DRUGS, GET FREE MEDICAL, DENTAL, DRUGS, AND MUCH MORE, BUT NOTING IS EVER SAID ABOUT CUTTING THIS FRAUD, ONLY THE POOR SENIORS, SS. PLEASE REPLY.

  39. Well, I am at the bottom of this comment page. I have read every post, and needless to say most are depressing. I know my situation about the lack of money; however, it does amaze me that so many are in bad shape financially all over the country. Since most of us share the same common problem of bills. Plus, not enough money to pay the bills and live on for a month. The bad thing about all of it is that unless it affects the higher up’s in Washington, they don’t even hear us. They live in a life of luxury with money, not having to worry about necessities in life. They have stocks, bonds, CD’s savings….things we don’t even have much knowledge of or have in our life. It is a check to check process, with no back up money. But, we are honest! We are the true American! We don’t sit in Congress or the Senate…we don’t eat a $100 meal at a time, but we do appreciate everything that is ours in this life. The rich probably will never know what is it to be poor, but they should just for then they might understand the plight we all are in with living on a fixed income, with no reserves on hand for any emergency. But, poor tho we be, rich in heart we are for all people. We wish everyone happiness in life!!

  40. I can’t believe they want the disabled to live another year without an increase! They say the cost of living has not gone up? EVERYTHING has gone up. We can’t live without food and postage stamps and gas or paying for transportation. Many are not turning on their heat and going without just to survive! While 250.00 may not seem like much to a congressmen that voted themselves thousands dollar a year raise.. to us it is a lot of money. Something if very wrong with this country that makes its sick and disabled suffer. I don’t know how those that voted against it can sleep at night, but I am sure that they don’t even think twice about it while they go shopping for a 1000.00 suit or purse. Congress get into reality! A person can hardly buy the basic food staples for 250.00! I am very upset about this. Taking money from the poorest of the poor and sick, that can’t work. They should be ashamed of themselves. Those that voted no should be forced to live on it for six months.. they would change their tune fast! Anyone in congress that voted no is out of reality of what it takes to survive out here.

    • Kathy they don’t care
They may start starvation-dehydration to get rid of us sick
humans so that ends SSI, Social Security for disabled and
seniors. Terry S was well known but their are thousands
of unknown cases who are never heard in the news.
The nursing homes make the money and they rather pay
more to a nursing home then Community Choice Act
which is cheaper but in reality the nursing home is much
cheaper because a disabled only lives 18 monthes in a
nursing home while a disabled with same disability lives
      18 years in the community.
Starvation-Dehydration is the cruelest form of murder
even worse then animals shot in slaughterhouses for
meat which lasts a four minutes but starvation-dehydration
lasts 15 to 30 days of pain.
This is what they will use to get rid of us with.
