I agree with the article. My wife and I wanted to buy a car... we found out the best price possible, and I called the dealership and said this is what I am willing to pay. The woman on the phone told me to come in and "we will talk". I gave phone to my wife and she told the woman that we have two month old infants and we are not driving 40 miles to just "talk". We want to make a deal on the phone. She was able to convience the woman over the phone in less than 5 minutes. We got the deal and car was ready when we got to the dealership. We got the car for much lower than the wholesale value... only because of my wife doing the dealing!

I don't agree with this. Its because of her patience and her stereotype of ignorance. The her part doesn't matter.

Walk-in acting as though your the buyer but not the one with the money.
Be a stickler when it comes to the price.
Claim to only want to drive the car and not know about how the car works.

Make sure the salesmen knows that your doing them a service not the other way around. many customers forget this. The buyer is always in control, but the seller needs to make a positive amount to grow his business to keep up with demand.

@ Lynn - Not a bad way to do. I also just read somewhere that women are the main deciders of cars in their household, so perhaps the paridgm is shifting.

@ SG - Tag team tactics to save money - I like it. Reasearch and being prepared ar what make this tactic work.

I would think that dealers would actually view the genders differently. It's only human nature to do so.

But I think with Tony's situation, it's all about personality. I can stall, analyze, negotiate till their eyes fall out. My wife just wants it, and wants it yesterday.

(From PF Buzz) I'm counting on it. I've already told my husband that when we buy our first car, he can go ahead and be the impulsive guy (he has ADD so he's perfect for the role) and I'll be the mean wife who's too tight on the purse strings.

But I think you have to be prepared for every scenario. We'd also do our research, on the off-chance a salesman would actually treat us both as intelligent humans.

I actually find it to work the other way. Salesmen tend to look down on us and getting them to take us seriously is sometimes a challenge. I prefer to look and even buy online.
