I also feel that one needs to be thorough with these 10 points before trying his hands at investing particularly in stocks:-

1. Understand the risk reward ratio of all investment tool
2. Past performance is not an indication of future performance
3. Join the herd late and come out of it first
4. Never speculate if you have long term view.
5. Know your stocks and investments.
6. Monitor the funds aggressively.
7. Define your goals and stick to it (how much return etc)
8. Invest with stop loss
9. Trust professionals if you dont have time to monitor market.
10.Stick to index funds (works best).

Regarding 401(k)s and Roth IRAs, don't you think that someone with outstanding credit card debt should instead apply any funds they have available for retirement contributions instead towards debt elimination?
