Pam, thanks for your comment. Public transport is a great option but a number of metros, like the greater DC/Northern Virginia area do not have much public transport. So driving is the only option. Car pools are a good option if you can find a suitable one.

The other option is to use more public transport or pooled transportation. Saves a lot of money in the long run. Most cities have transportation websites that help you identify car pools. Alternatively use Craigs list to post a free ad.
