Banks out; credit union in.

I never pay any fees at the credit union, where I have two free checking accounts, a money market checking account, a regular money market account, and regular savings. Got a 5.3% mortgage through the credit union. When My Beloved Employer screwed up its payroll so radically that some people weren't getting paychecks, got $3,000 worth of check-bouncing credit with no fee. Interest rates on CDs and savings accounts are a little lower than an online bank's, but not enough to make it worth the hassle to bank with an institution where you can't reach a human being or go in person to check out a problem (been there, done that).

Good article. There is little doubt that banks will have to make up for bad debt and delinquency from good paying customers. With that being said there are plenty of options to still get zero or low fee banking solutions such as checking accounts, credit cards, and loans in general. Thanks for the recommendations!
