2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

  1. Filed on January 23, 2017, with Liberty Tax . My Manager filed on January 24, 2017, with Turbotax.com. My Manager and I had the same forms 1040EZ with no Child Care Credit or Extra Income Credit. We both filed E-File
My Manager received her “Tax Refund” on January 31, 2017, in her Bank account.

  2. Bar said return received online on the 2dn of February…. Saturday morning the 11th it says
According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds before February 15 for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. This applies to the entire refund, even the portion not associated with these credits.
If there was a problem would I know yet?

    • Susan I am having the same situation. I e-filed through Turbo Tax and my status bar stated that my refund had been received up until Saturday morning around 4am. It states the same message that you are receiving now. I am curious about what they might need to verify? (If they do) Because I just gave birth to my first child last year in July, but I am definitely calling them first thing in the morning before the birds start to chirp lol. I am aware that we have to wait until the 15th, but my gosh

  3. I can’t order my transcript sad face but my boyfriend can. We did ours on the 17th. I called they said everything looked good and I just had to wait. I had education tax credit but I’m actually kind of worried now. I need to pay rent.

    • Destiny, there is article about some Education Tax Credit being delayed. They may just be waiting on a form from the school to verify the credits. Just have yours on hold until then….hopefully soon you will be updated. Good luck..

      • I had the school tax credit. Yes it does fall under path however, no delay. Only etic and actc. The irs confirmed this and per their site there’s no mention of a delay for the hope or opportunity credit. Irs is just taking full effect of their 21 window for processing. Mine was approved Saturday with a ddd of 2.15

Since you haven’t received any letters, then you are just pending and should see an update soon. Hope it will be this week. I got my fingers crossed for you :-). Google to see if you can find that article ok. Good news, no letter…good sign.

      • Nese, no it may not be….please google Trumps Tax Plan…I don’t think I can add the link here. He made a promise to make major changes and he wants to do away with the EIC/ACTC and only keep CTC…sorry to share bad news…but this is in the works…hopefully won’t happen in time for 2018…ugh. This could be the LAST YEAR to file these credits…real talk.

  4. OK seriously what does it mean when the bars go away on wmr? And is it a good sign that I was able to order my 2016 transcript?

        • Do you have credits such as the EIC or ACTC? If so the bars were supposed to disappear and if not it means your return is being reviewed manually

        • So that’s a good thing, i would not worry too much. Soon after WMR update you should see the topic related to PATH.

        • Hello. My bars also disappeared and it has a message that reads “Check back after February 15th for your personalized tax return update” I also filed for both the WIC and ACTC credit. Does that also pertain to me? Meaning is that a good thing for me as well? Just curious, I would appreciate your help

    • Amy I live in Atlanta, I remember for two years straight, my refund was deposited in my checking account and it still said accepted, everything depends on updated, the updated part is just a click by an individual that’s assigned to a batch, the system handles everything, if the system doesn’t get a ‘alert’ it goes through, people if you filed last month and have not gotten a letter in 02/13/2017, in each state, there is an IRS in each county, it takes 2 to 3 days to receive a letter

      Reply
      • Its happened to me several times wmr says accepted or processing and funds were deposited before it even updated. I know a few people who filed and received refunds on the 10th my sister in laws took 11 days she did not have the eic or actc.

    • Diane, if you haven’t received a letter in the mail by now, you are mostly ok. They may just be pending until they have w-2 or forms that has not yet been submitted to verify. You don’t have the PATH message? I would call them in the morning, they should be able to look at your return. Although they may say, officially the 21 days is Tuesday…the 14th. Good luck.

    • @ Diane, in the thousands of comments I’ve read from people all over the world, from several different websites, it is my understanding that if the WMR bars disappear and there is no PATH message in its place that it means you are being audited or that you need to verify identity. Several people were thinking they were OK because they hadn’t received a letter Or a notice eventually called and that ended up being the case. I Sincerely hope not and I pray that everything works out for you!!!

  7. Correction: Trump Tax Law
    • The standard deduction will go way up. It jumps from $6,300 to $15,000 for singles; for married joint filers it jumps from $12,600 to $30,000.
    • Personal exemptions and exemptions for dependents are eliminated, as is the head of household deduction.
    • Families with children under age 13 can deduct childcare costs, capped at the state average.

“If you wait until February 15th, then it’s probably going to be, according to the IRS, 14 – 21 days until you get your refund. So, at least you can get the clock going now by filing early,” said Kelly.

In fact, the IRS is saying that even for folks who have already filed and will be eligible for the that refund on February 15th, it could be a slow process at first. They’re saying that you shouldn’t worry about whether your refund is having issues until at least the 27th.

  10. This may be the last year any of us see EIC or ACTC if Trumps new Tax Laws goes into affect before 2018. He is eliminated the Head of Household, EIC and ACTC credits. He is raising the standard deduction to $12,000 for low income ranges and only allowing the CTC up to a child age 13th ONLY…..all good things do come to an end..let’s just hope it is not until 2019. I have links to all the things I have shared..I can post them or you can google this info…

  11. The reason the banks could take up to (2) weeks to process is because IRS goes after the banks if they allow a fraudster to successfully gain access to monies that was not vetted by the bank. See (excerpt) Sometimes those bad returns get through and the money has to be clawed back from the financial institutions where returns were deposited —the goal is to prevent this altogether.

  12. The Path Law caused the cycles to be off for those with EIC, ACTC. A lot of us should see pending deposits on the 15th and 17th in your bank accounts…Don’t wait on the WMR to updates until after you have already gotten your refund. Just check your transcript online this week to see if you see the Code 846…then you will be in the first batch for the 15th.

  13. All, I spoke to IRS and was told the date you see on your account transcript “penalty, or interest accrued” is your 21 days from accepted mines show 2-13-17. That is the date the system determines it they owe you interest which they don’t until 4-15-17. It doesn’t mean anything. Now the date further down that state “processing” date of 2-13-17 is the actually date they completed processing your return. My code is 20170405 (off) I should have gotten my return on 1-26-17 with a DDD for 2-1-17.

      • Nicole, it all depends on how many IRS releases on the Master File, since they have a huge backlogs, they may be releasing additional days from Monday up until the 27th to push them all out….they usually add more releases for backlogs. So we all just have to check those online transcript and our bank accounts…no way of telling who will be in each release batch starting tomorrow…I am sure many will post as they confirm the code 846 or pending deposit…watch your bank..

The Master File tape is sent to the Treasury Dept every Monday morning to process and release refunds for the upcoming dates of the 15th and 17th. This is stated in the IRS Manuel. Cut off dates for each week are Wednesday’s. IRS weeks starts on Thursday’s and ends on Wed for the next (Batch of Releases). Major updates are Thursday, Saturday and Monday’s between 3am -6am est.

I am totally against the EIC you should never get a refund more than what you paid in and I am sure you receive benefits as well, it should be one or the other, not both!! Have a good day……

The EIC is what keeps us alive in a lot of ways and in a lot of ways being poor is so much harder than having enough. He definitely doesn’t want to be me!

      • OMG! Are you for real? The IRS collects taxes and deals with many things to do with taxes. The IRS didn’t make shit happen. They don’t decide tax rates. If you don’t earn the $ and pay it in taxes then anything you get not earned is FREE. No one should get ‘paid’ for taking care of their kids. Get an education. Make more $. Take care of your own shit like the rest of of us do. And I won’t read your response bc your an idiot.

Don’t put yourself on such a high pedestal, it only makes your fall farther!!! N u will fall, we all do in life…I just hope all ur negativity doesnt bite u in the butt…you know what they say about karma:)

        • well i’m a single mom too and i work ready hard to support my kids and i do look forward every year to receive my $6000+ because i like to take a my kids on vacation and buy them extra stuff not i can not afford during the year.

    • Well if you don’t like what people are saying or complaining about then stay off of here. You don’t have to be on here seeing people complain. So just exit off of this site. And it’s not free money, it’s money that people worked hard for all year long. So goodbye

    • @Kris K let me educate you first off it’s not free money we have work all year for our money which is saved up on the end of the year taking care of children is not free money we spent out more than we received back so before you speak on anything know your knowledge about it,thank you and have a nice day.. ..

      • Did you earn the money and pay all that money you are getting in taxes? No? Then it’s ‘FREE’! No one should be paid by the gov’t to care for their own kids. Do you really think that taxes are taken out of your check so it can be ‘saved’ for the end of the year? No use trying to explain it. You can’t understand. Sad you need to be paid to care for your own kids. I too am a single mom. I however pay for my kids myself. No handouts. Don’t bother responding. You’re to stupid for me to deal with.

        • Dear Karen and Kris K
A handout is getting close to ONE BILLION dollars in tax brakes from the IRS for companys losses like Trumps Taj Majal due to his brilliant way of managing that business. And dont forget a bigger handout is NOT paying taxes for 18 years on millions and millions of revenue from his casinos as a result to offset his losses for such casino business. Please, dont mix the REAL hardworking tax-paying Americans, with handouts. Both of you are on the wrong blog. God bless you.

        • Karen. You said you’re a single mother, right? So you claim your child on your taxes..which means YOU are also getting that “FREE MONEY” that you are complaining about! Idiot!

    • Sounds to me like someone is a little bitter that the rest of us are getting big refunds lmao! I am a single mom who works all year and provides for her kids and PAYS TAXES!! So if i want to look forward to being able to treat my kids to some new shoes and clothes or a lil vacation them thats whats im going to do!! N u or anybody else is going to make me feel bad about it!

      Reply
    • I agree. You should only get what you pay in. I am sure Deanna you DON’T feel bad knowing you didn’t earn that refund. Just bc you are a single mom doesnt make you “entitled”. I am also a single mom and I also work all year and guess what? I also pay taxes. And no I’m not bitter bc I can take my kids on vacation and buy them shoes with my own money. But do enjoy that vacation on us. Bc this may well be the last year of EIC!

      • Sure don’t feel bad for getting the refund…what I feel bad for are people like you who try and make themselves feel better by putting others down…now if you thought I was implying that I can only afford to get my kids things at tax time, u were sadly mistaken!!!! My children are well provided for all year because I do work hard and pay taxes. Do I feel “entitled” as u suggested, absolutely not! I did not pass the law making the tax credits available to me! BUT I WILL USE THEM HAPPILY

        • And I’m so very confused who the us is u are referring to? Because I paid my taxes all year, so with or without the credits I would still be entitled to e refund. I think the “us” you are talking about are those of you who don’t qualify for the extra tax credits, and since you don’t qualify you probably are too pressed for a refund.. So Im confused as to why u are even on this forum that those of us who need our $ use to help share info with each other

    • Kris unfortunately some people are not fortunet to make 70 plus a year and not get tax breaks. I am one who has a degree and have been paying back student loans for ever with one child married and our combined income we always have to claim 1 exemption to see a mimimum of $500 a year. I will I could claim a tax exemption. So with that being said you must be one of those trump supporters who is entitled. And assumes that everyone is looking for a hand out. Well honey not everyone is looking.

  18. Okay… Soooooo I just tried to check my refund status again on the IRS website (Only because it is giving me different updates and statues everyday, it seems like) and NOW it says the the website is unavailable to check back later. What is going on? There has to be an overload with the “NEW SYSTEM” I claimed credits as well and I have been reading other comments and this is simply ridiculous. Some people look forward to gettback the money that they worked hard for throughout the year.

Check your return and see if you qualified for the EIC. If so that is why you received the path message and won’t see funds until after February 15th. You do not necessarily have had to claim dependents to receive this. I hope this helps.

        2) If you don’t like the way I feel, heed your own advice
        3) You insinuated your disdain for the IRS (I am right there with you), yet you criticize me for reiterating your own words. I am not telling you what you like, or dislike
        4) Nothing about my comment was “sick”
        5) What do you mean, “[I had] better come correct”? Do you mean to say, don’t point out your hypocrisy?

I had gotten notice that they have received my return and it stated on the left side of the status bar what I was expecting to receive and now as of 3/4am this morning, it now says to check back after 2/15 and the amount of monies I was to receive is now gone. This whole situation is a mess.
