2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

  1. I have the processing message but it dose not show my amount so I’m in the same boat as some other people. Looking at my transcript ( return transcript ) it has per computer next to all my return information show it should have been processed already. I didn’t order the account transcript but I am today or I’ll just call and tell them I was told to, to make sure everything is savvy with it. I don’t need the money asap but it is our money they have no problems ripping right out of our hands anytime the want yet they make new rules and laws to withhold our returns and even then they don’t go by what they say or can’t be any more helpful. Others that have just the ” we are processing your return” with no amount, update us on when your amount shows up. My amount is rather big above 8500.00 so they could be double checking the larger refunds.

  2. I know this sounds stupid, but what is the transcript you are getting coded on? I e-filed thru turbotax, I only see the message of your refund is being processed. I see where some people have commented about their transcript, what is that? Thank you!

      • transcript has nothing to do with your refund. most people need a transcript because they don’t know their Adjusted Gross Income from last tax year. Yea, it completed your return from last year. LOL.. It does not confirm that your refund has been processed.

      • Refund transcript shows you all the information you entered when you filed. Also at the top to the right it will show a cycle that it posted. Mine was 20170405 which I believe was accepted on the last week of January as I filed on the 24, accepted on an hour later and got the Tax topic junk the next few days. It shows what you entered far as Gross amount from w2’s, credits and whatever else. Also it will say underneath each line ‘per computer” . So if you entered say 34K taxable wages it will say ” taxable gross per computer 34k” EIC 2000.00 per computer 2000.00 and so fourth. When it says per computer it means it has been through their computer and verified hence why you can order a transcript. The account transcript is little different. That one will show any changes, credits or deductions made during the processing not to mention codes like the refund code or need to verify ID code and this is for the 2016 tax year not the previous. Now it does not mean your refund has been approved as stated by Robin but it does give you some insight that it has been ran through the system. The whole reason for the Tax Act is to further verify everything after they run it through and before they just hand out money. They need to make sure that after they process yours, make sure no one else is going to use your kids or whatever else. Also like me last year, they want to make sure they get all forms from say 1099C cancellation of debt and HSA distribution forms as well. A lot of people file really early and get those forms Mid February and they have to amend it, this happened to me this year with a HSA form they sent late to the wrong address. Their are a lot of honest people out there but there’s more scammers and thieves. The more they steal the more we will foot the bill through out the year that being said, The IRS could have handled this better but it is what it is and next year we know what to expect. I believe the IRS understands our frustration but they have to go by the new Path Law.

  3. I got the 846 code on my transcript. Hallelujah!!!!! but the date said 03-06-2017, it’s that mean I will receive the funds on that day or after? Anyone know? Thank you in advance.

  4. I filed 2/1. Accepted late that after 4 or so. I still show refund accepted but has not moved to processed. My transcripts for 2016 are not available. We did not have EIC or anything so I am unsure of what the hold up is.

      But I’m being processed.

  6. I filed my return on January 13th, it was accepted on the 20th. Once the 24th hit, the bars went away and it’s been on the still processing message ever since. I contacted the irs on Monday the 13th and initially the lady said she saw no issues with my return. She then placed me on hold for five minutes and then told me to wait two weeks and I’d either get my refund or be contacted by them via mail. I have no credits or deductions on my taxes outside of the standard deduction as I am single with no children and have already graduated college. I’ve heard a lot about people having to verify their identity in person and I feel as if that’s what’s going on with mine as well.

  10. I checked the IRS website because they stated there would be an update on 2/16. There was a change. From the PATH message back to processing. I thought that the website would be updated with a DDD. I called the IRS and the only thing the girl told me is that we should see DD the week of 2/27. I told the girl that I received my transcript and that it was already processed. The only thing she kept telling me is that we will see the week of 2/27. It look like we all waited for the 15th for nothing.

    • I just called the IRS too, the rep that took my call did not even get my personal info, they are just setting low expectations so they don’t have to go into every account…. most are repeating the same info to keep AHT low (just from exp working in call centers). I asked about my transcripts….again general info. Unless you find a rep willing to review you info you will get the “You will see DD the week of the 2/27” bs.

    • It says that for everyone that filed the eic this year. Don’t expect your return till closer to the end of the month. The reason they give is because of people trying to claim children double times (split families). My refund was approved back in January and I have been waiting till feb 15 also.

    • They’re not going by the transcripts, I was told on yesterday by 2 IRS workers 1 from 18008290582, and the transcript number 18008290922, that because of the PATH this year they are not going by transcripts, that is why we were all able to order our transcripts, but we’re still processing or not started processing yet, I did just speak to rep in transcript dept, she looked at my account said it was closed, meaning it’s done, she don’t see a balance owed only refund being owed, she didn’t see a date yet, but she said they received it on 27th, and she counted from her end and told me I should receive it next week

    • OMG, I just called the 18008290582, and the IRS rep took my information and was like ‘didn’t you already speak to someone this morning’, I had to switch it up and say that I did speak to someone in transcripts dept, and i just wanted to ask a question about my transcript, he was like, well ‘ i’m reading that you were told about your refund already, and you don’t need to call everyday, so I was lie well the last person that I spoke to said my account was closed, and he did look at it and said yes your account is closed, which means ‘it’s finished processing’, and he said look for my refund to be deposited between today and next week

      • Call center reps hate customers like this. Not trying to be mean, but one of my favorite lines used to be “if 6 people told me the same thing, I’d tend to believe it might be true.” Repeat callers clog up the queue and make the wait times excessively long due to unnecessary calling, not to mention pissing off the reps.

I was disappointed to find on the IRS website this morning that all it saids now is my refund is being processed. I file the same way every year and there is no need to hold my refund any longer. If they haven’t found anything yet it’s because there’s nothing to find.

  22. I’m so confused. I filed 1/9, I know the IRS didn’t open until 1/23 but on that day I checked my Jackson Hewitt account and it stated that my return was received, acknowledged, accepted by the IRS. So if it was already accepted, why did it update from the PATH message to “your return is being processed?” I thought it was already accepted and processed! We’ve been waiting long enough. On 2-15, the people filing EIC should have received their returns. Because if they’re just now STARTING to process then that means our returns have been just sitting for a month.

That dissappeared this morning and now all it says is my tax return has been recieved and is being processed. There is no longer a tax topic or bars on there but I still have my refund amount on the bottom of the screen. My question is I guess is it a good thing to not have a tax topic anymore?

  24. Mine is the same as everyone elses’. PATH message is gone, says it’s being processed and my amount is back on the left side bottom. Sure hope this nightmare is over soon, this is ridiculous! I’m in Ga and got State back over a week ago! Good Luck y’all..

    • Mine says it is received and being processed as well. However, I just went to the IRS website and printed my 2016 tax returns with no problem showing my refund. I think the IRS is delaying the processing of the refunds at this point intentionally. My boyfriend filed his returns a few weeks after I did (early February) and he had the child care credit on his return. He had the IRS bar showing his was pending to be deposited into his bank account before 2/15/17. His bank account even had the pending deposit on 2/13/17. I think this is something that really needs to be researched and called in to question by the American public. To have already processed, but intentionally delay providing returns is unacceptable. A delay of a day or two is understandable, but I filed my return by January 16, 2017. They should have my return pending to deposit on 2/15/17. Unacceptable.

  28. This is very frustrating! I waited until the 15th and saw no change but realized it said check back AFTER the 15th so here I am today. I no longer see the PATH message but all it says is my return is being processed which is really no info at all!

No bars, but the amount is back at the bottom on the left again.
    Hopefully this is good.

  35. Jazzy,
You seem to have the best answers so far on comments and if you don’t mind I’d like to ask you a couple myself.
    1) I filed on the 23rd and the PATH act applies to my return. As of the 24th I received a messaged stating that my return had been received. Now I have the “being processed” message. Does that mean it was accepted and approved and is being processed for return or that they’re still reviewing it?
    2) When visiting the website it stated that I would likely not see any different updates until the 18th. Does that mean the next step is sending the refund to my account on the 18th or that there may be a potential problem with my refund?

  37. I received the same “being processed” message. I looked on the FAQ on the IRS website and it said something to the effect of “the status not changing until Feb 18th”.

  38. The system updates between 3/4 a.m EST. So technically it hasn’t updated processed refunds for approval for Feb 16 yet. Let’s hope that’s the case
