2017 Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule, Rules, Form 1040X and Deadlines

So you have submitted your tax return and at some stage down the road you notice that you forgot to claim one of the many stimulus credits or qualified deductions. You may think that this money is gone now that your return has been submitted but you would be wrong; since you can actually send an amended tax return and claim this extra cash. The IRS will process – free of charge – your amended return and then pay you back what you are due. On the flip side if you owe more than you paid with your original filing, then you should still file an amended return with the extra tax payments. Most likely you will also have to pay a fine or penalty as well – which will be lower the sooner you pay the extra taxes. Also it is better to fess up an pay early rather than face an IRS audit which will pick up these overdue tax payments

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule Cycle

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return. Generally you will have to wait 8 to 12 weeks for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to use the IRS tool, Where’s My Amended Return” instead. You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040

Here are other key factors to keep in mind with amended tax return filings:

– What you can and cannot file an amended return for. You should file an amended return if you discover any of the following items were reported incorrectly: filing status, dependents, total income, deductions or credits. You usually do not need to file an amended return because you forgot to include tax forms such as W-2s or schedules. The IRS normally will send a separate request asking for those documents.

– Once you have submitted your federal income tax return, you can no longer change that return. (One exception: If your e-filed tax return is rejected, you can make changes before sending it in again) If you want to make changes after the original tax return has been filed, you must file an amended tax return using a special form called the 1040X – Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, entering the changes and explaining why you need to amend your original tax return. You don’t have to redo your entire return, either. Just show the necessary changes and adjust your tax liability accordingly

– Deadlines to File the Amended return. You generally must file an amended return within three years of the date you filed the original return or within two years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. Be sure to enter the year of the return you are amending at the top of Form 1040X

– You can use e-tax preparation software to amend your return. In fact, TurboTax walks you step-by-step through amending your federal income tax return. However you still need to file and mail the amended return using Form 1040X manually. The IRS isn’t set up to accept an amended returns electronically.

– If you are amending more than one tax return, prepare a 1040X for each return and mail them in separate envelopes to the IRS office for the area in which you live. The 1040X instructions list the addresses for the campuses. If the changes involve another schedule or form, you must attach it to the 1040X.

– Amending your state tax return. First, fill out an amended federal income tax return, Form 1040X. Then, get the proper form from your state and fill it out. Like the IRS, your state uses a special form for an amended return. Many states also use the X suffix for the form number. For example, California uses Form 540X and Hawaii uses Form N-188X. Don’t forget to attach a copy of your amended federal return (Form 1040X) to your amended state return.

– If you owe additional taxes for a past tax year, you should still file. Form 1040X and pay the tax as soon as possible to limit interest and penalty charges. Interest is charged on any tax not paid by the due date of the original return, without regard to extensions.

I filed my amended tax return and it was approved and I got my refund money my account, then about a month later I got a bill for the amount of my return. This don’t seem right to me. I feel like of they approved it then I shouldn’t have to turn around and pay it back.

Why are some of these comments recent, but the amendment dates are two years old? We filed ours weeks ago, and it was received June 25, and adjusted August 2. They say they’ll send a letter explaining adjustment within three weeks. What is that supposed to mean? A letter explaining it? What about the actual payment? Sounds like a lot of run around from our good old government.

I’ve been waiting for my amended refund. It was mailed on February 5 2019. Can get no information about it on their web site or phone number. Some where along the line the government for got they work for us we don’t work for them! Some how the Americans need to get together and remind the government employee’s. Its the only way to make a difference.

I filed 2017 in Feb -17forgot a 3000.00 W2 . They made me prove my identity. After that it was 2018 filing time . Did that all good. Student loans got paid by it. The student loan was never notified about 2017 money so they didn’t place a hold government in nt shut down. So I call and for 4 months different agents told me different LIES about WHERE THE HELL IS MY REFUND . Finally a week ago they told me I efil ed d my amended return and need to mail it .Really no one for a ye as r could tell me that’s what they wanted? So now I sent it registered mail and supposedly I will get it in 3 months 2.5 yrs later I asked them if they were gonna pay interest? The agent of course laughed and said possibly More BS surely . Wonder how else u can deal with this kind of runaround they do what they want when they want and dont care if we struggle everyday while they draw their big fat checks for screwing us little people over. I just mailed my amended return out yesterday, and after looking at all of these comments I have decided that I’m not going to even worry about it! I certainly am not going to COUNT on it! Yes, it does say 16 weeks, but when some people get them in 6 weeks, or 8, or even less, it gives others “hope” that they will be one of the lucky ones. So maybe the IRS should stop “dicking” everyone around and make it so EVERYONE gets there refund at 16 weeks if amended!!
They owe me over 900$, they can keep it before I get this stressed out about it, as some of these people have on this thread. Holy cow!!!

They owe my husband double of his original amount. He never even received the original refund. He was supposed to get a little over $4,000 and after it was amended online to show how much he gets now they owe him almost $9,000! We have been stressed about this refund for MONTHS. 16 weeks will be up on Thanksgiving day but who knows when it will come.

I mailed my amendment on February 20, they received it February 28th, it was adjusted on April 6th . I call the IRS because I was confused. The operator said that a check was being mailed out today. But when I checked the website it doesn’t say that it has been completed. What should I believe.

I read through all the comments. I filed an amended 2017 return and it is showing it was received on March 09,2018. I know online info says to allow up to 16 weeks and someone reads getting theirs within 21 days.
Can some of you update your comments please so we know if anyone ever received their money from amendments. I ‘m curious where the process is all at and if so many people were waiting on money back if they didn’t received it, where it is.

I amended my 2016 taxes and mailed them at the beginning of May 2017. The “Where’s my amended taxes” shows received on 5/17/17; Adjusted on 07/21/17; Completed on 7/28/17. It is now 9/7/17 — exactly 16 weeks and 1 day; and I have not received ANYTHING from the IRS….No letter, no check, no deposits. I call them weekly and they are the rudest people I’ve ever had to speak to and every single one of them tell me something completely different and contradict what the previous person stated! Anyone else received something from them yet?

Call (855) 868-0151 Dept of Treasury to see if a check is being processed. Tell them the IRS says your check was sent on the (completed) date. Try that! For example: I call them whenever I am expecting a check from veterans affair, etc…..they have access to the entire federal payment system, including child support payments, IRS lost checked, etc….
        Hope this helps

I have a question concerning early withdrawal of retirement funds. My wife had filed for disability in early 2009 and in June of the same year we had to withdraw money in her name from the retirement fund in order to survive. This year we filed our tax return and paid the 10% penalty for the money withdrawn. In May of 2010 she was approved for 100% disability by a federal judge which dates back to 2008.

My question is this: Can we file an amended return and send the order for disability to the IRS and recoup the 10% penalty we paid?

I cannot see why not. However you should contact the IRS or check with a local accountant to make sure you file the appropriate paperwork.
