2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

BUT three weeks after in filed I got a 1099misc form in that I didnt know about. So far no messages or letters from the irs but it will make my refund go down by 278.00. What will they do? Still process and issue the refund and I have to amend or will they correct it and offset the refund by whats owed from that 1099 i didnt file? Stupid street address, I always get mail late due to a funky address. My house divides two streets and the next house is 1 number off from mine and they always get my mail and send it back when they know it’s mine and can walk 20 yards to give it to me.

  9. I called on my refund last week and got right through. I electronically filed January 31st and my return was accepted in a few minutes. When I spoke to the IRS rep she said they received my return Feb 3rd and I needed to wait 21 days. I usually receive my refund in a week deposited on Friday’s. I have no child credits filed so my return should not have been held until the 15th. Maybe they just held mostly everyone’s.

  10. Does anyone know what processed means are they done and ready to be sent out… I did mine Feb 4th got accepted same day and now getting that processed message.. • I talked to a rep. And she said that it means that they are looking at it and if there not any more processing issues that I will get my return soon. I asked her if it was safe to say that my 21 day wait starts on the 15 but she said No it started the day I file and submitted my return.

  11. Help please:
I just called the tax offset number(1-800-304-3107). It said I have an offset of $155 that has been applied to my return on (get this) 2/22/2017. That’s next Wednesday. What does that mean? Does it mean my DDD is set for that date?
    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Reply
    • @Wutstheholdup

I did the same thing and it said my offset was taken out of my 02/22/2017 return. When I woke up thismorning WMR updated to DDD of 02/22/2017. So I guess that is a good way to get the DDD if you have an offset.

I work hard, I have a brand new baby boy (My first and last) and I don’t have the WMR bar anymore, the PATH act message and the Tax Topic 152 disappeared. It now states that my taxes are being processed and the amount of money that I am owed is finally back on the left hand side. I filed on 2/3 with Turbo Tax and it was accepted the very next day. I requested for my monies to be deposited into my bank account. But I am still inpatient as ever. Has anyone else had any good luck or heard any TRUTH from an IRS employee lol. I was able last week to order by mail my transcripts both and now I am confused. What is happening. Please explain this to me

    • It is a good thing. That means the IRS done processing your account. Check your transcript next. If you can see a “846” code that means your refunds will get in to your account soon. You can get your transcript from IRS website. I hope that help.

They have currently updated their website to explain everything. It sucks I know but they can only give an out line of the process as everyones returns are different and small incomplete things can hold things up. I suggest taking tomorrow off from worrying about this, dont look at all, relax and check back on houte status Saturday. Hell dont even check these comments of others.

    • I just spoke to an agent, Mrs Brown, she was very lovely and helpful. She looked up my return and let me know there were no issues holding back my account. She told me they are instructed to let people know they should expect their returns by the 27th. I told her I knew someone who already got theirs and had the EIC and acic credit as well as me. She said she did too but they have to tell us the 27th. I asked unofficially if it could come earlier and she vaguely implied that it could but she had to tell me the 27th. So it could come any day as long as you have no issues is what I gathered. Hope this helps.

Read the main website on the irs, stop bothering the irs, read what they are saying on there site, transcripts or etc will not give you no information. Patiences is the key, I am nervous and furious what’s going on, but remember the person you call at the irs, they have directions on what to tell us as tax payers. They are doing there job like we do at our job. We all can bite our nails off, pull our hair out lose sleep over this, but what’s going to happen is going to happen it’s call life. I know I need my refund for financial reasons. Really bad, but trying to cut corners to find out more information about your taxes is crazy. Really think about this what ever u think about to cut corners to find out about your tax return they all ready no what to expect so they already shut that door. Everybody’s situation is going to be different it’s life. So we are upset it stinks, I believe it’s wrong, we all need our cash, but I have to think it’s gong to happen soon we will have our refund soon.

    • If you owe for any back taxes or years you didn’t file with in a four year period they will take the money it happened last year to my husband and I for taxes he filed in 2012 they did an audit and took the offset for the money he owed prior to us being married and they had already took the money in 2011 they actually got paid twice and made up some lame excuse that he was audited for prior years. We filed this year on 01/21/17 and still have the message your return was received and is being processed after the path message went away on Wednesday filed with h and r block.

  24. Me and my husband filed out taxes on January 4th thinking we would get our taxes back soon. TRICK, we found out about that new law and then we was like okay we filed them early so hopefully we would get them on feb. 16th. Yeah well that didn’t happen either we are still WAITING ugh…… it has been a month and a half since we filed out taxes. I hope and pray it is soon.

    • I know how you feel. I filed my taxes a few days after you. I didn’t even know about the processing delay for earned income credit or child credit. It seems like a stupid idea to wait to process a huge portion of tax returns at the same time. Sadly I was banking on the taxes to pay for a few large birthday presents for my boy. Guess the tax man will bring his presents late this year.

  25. Over It

Both my mother and I claimed a child on our taxes. She did 4 days before mine. Last week she got a letter from the IRS for her to call them to Identify that it was her. She got her refund yesterday and mine saids “processing”. So I believe that all situations are different and there is no “real” way we will know until are refunds are in our bank accounts!

  26. For people that are getting their transcripts for refund purposes…

A tax transcript will not help you find out when you’ll get your refund. The information transcripts have about your account does not necessarily reflect the amount or timing of your refund. They are best used to validate past income and tax filing status for mortgage, student and small business loan applications, and to help with tax preparation.

  27. I just got off the phone with a very helpful rep! she stated that they started processing refunds on yesterday. (Feb 15th) so that mean starting counting your 21 days from that date.. so in reality its just like you filed your taxes on the 15th even tho you probably subnmitted them to the irs on the 23rd of Jan…… if that make sense

    • I asked the lady about the 21 day thing after the 15th she said its not gonna take 21 days everyone she get a date or code by the 18th

      Reply
    • I was told by the irs that even though they had to hold them it’s 21 days from when you filed and most people will receive them the week of the 27th if there are no issues

  28. So if you check your status on the phone app, it will not show the amount but it will when you use the website version. This was my case this morning. I looked on the phone app, WMR2go and showed nothing then looked on the website and showed all my info and the amount. That might be the reason why some people are not seeing the amount. I had to update the phone app yesterday and it looks deferent than before. Also the more people check WMR the slower it goes and more back logged it gets also why if you use it much in one day it kicks you out till the next. That’s why they update it past midnight, less network traffic on their server. I believe they are saying at least the 27th for worse case scenario. All the other years, past 4 of them, it gave me a DD kind of far off but I got it anywhere from 4-7 days before that. I really think after midnight Friday things will pick up and everything will get on track. Also remember these IRS reps are not trained all that well as they where probably brought in to help with the extra load so they don’t actually know the correct info plus they are dealing with angry people so cut them a little break. I bet their job sucks royaly right now.

  29. I filed on the 23rd of January. It was approved by the IRS on the 25th. I still have not received my money. I claimed by son who is 8 and I have been reading up that the Child Tax Credit is going to take longer than expected but it’s been more than 21 calendar days. Does anyone have any insight on this? THANK YOU!

    • Refund was delayed for everyone who is getting the child tax credit. The IRS did not start processing those returns until the 15th of February. So no matter when you filed, your refund wasn’t going to be processed until the 15th or after. You should get your return by the end of the month if everything was done correctly.

  30. Sorry but you all sound like wild rabid animals with that crazed look in your eyes. The irs has already stated that refunds would start going out the week of the 24th. Unless youre doing some illegal activity, what are you worried about? Are you state checks gone already? Not trying to sound mean but just being honest. It sucks we have to wait for our money but what can you do about it? Maybe people should stop always trying to get over on the system. We all for the most part are receiving the same message so just be patient people MY GAWD!

      • Not everyone receives a state check. In Texas it is federal only. People depend on this money and when you usually receive it at a certain time because you filed at a certain time and that changes it messes people up. So illegal activity? Maybe it is that people are waiting to get things for their children or move or pay off debt. Things changed this year and it has thrown everyone off. So maybe you should keep your negative comments to yourself. It just makes you sound stupid.

      • @Leah B,
Wow did Jake strike a nerve? According to your hostility you just showed us with that filthy comment, it is you that is a rabid animal not Jake and yes he speaks for all us when it comes to your comment. ALSO what you said about the 24th was completely wrong as I got my refund date of 22nd NOT THE 24TH. so there blows any credibility you have out the window. Have fun playing in the sandbox with the others in your kindergarten class. BYE FELECIA!

    • Leah B, You might want to head on over to the IRS website and read further. It has been stated the IRS will RELEASE affected refunds starting on February 15th not the 24th. What that means is, they will release the affected refunds into their system to be sent out, once that has happened people will get updates on their WMR. A stated by the IRS yet again, they said to check back after February 15th for updates that will happen between the 16th and the 18th. NOT THE 24TH as you put it. For the rabid animal comment. Pfft. Why are you here wasting time making a comment like that if you think that?

      • Aron you said everything correctly…,A lot of people are being miss guided by reading comments from other people’s opinions..I suggest people following up an reading the comments on the IRS website first an for most cause let’s face it they are the ones releasing our refunds…They clearly stated that they will start releasing refunds on February the 15 an that everyone will have an update no later then the 18th…They also made clear because of the delay an the millions of returns being pushed out that some under the path act may it see there refund till the week of February 27th so like Aron said I strongly suggest to take what the IRS says more seriously rather then others opinions..Not that hearing about the next persons refund may be interesting an may narrow down or help in some way just take the facts in as well is all I’m saying..thanks an hope everyone gets there refunds soon.

      • Aaron you went to somewhat professional to just straight ignorant and rude! So your 2 day difference is just so amazing. Congrats to you! You still wont receive it until the 24th lol so my credibility is good. Also if you like I can leave the sandbox and let you have it to yourself since you seem to know everything. Maybe you can teach the kids how to build a sand tax castle

    • Mine says that as well according to the irs and h and r block it means there finishing them getting ready to approve and release the funds. If there aren’t any issues if you had some kind of issue you would receive a code with a message or letter in the mail. I hope that helps. I called both h and r block and the irs so I’m hoping that on the 18th it shows everyone ddd

  33. Okay so I spoke to the rep for about 30 minutes she was very nice and I’m hoping that what she’s telling me is true so she told me that for all of us that have seen the status of being processed or processing that we should wait until we get a projected date for refund to be mailed out or to be direct deposited now she said for the ones that are waiting for a direct deposit a lot of people are going to be getting their direct deposit between the 22nd and the 24th towards the end of the month like the 27th I’m the one that’s waiting on a paper check in my account is closed she told me that mine would take five weeks especially if they try to send it to the bank in the bank kicks it back to the IRS you got to wait for the IRS to get it back and I could take up to five weeks or at least five weeks and then she said it’s going to be five weeks from the date of it being the 27th which means I wouldn’t get my stuff until the end of March probably beginning of April I’m not waiting that long so in my situation I have to get my account open there’s no way for me to change it unless it got rejected because mine still says accepted and I haven’t even gotten my state yet probably because of my account being closed she also told me that the ribs that you guys were talking to when you ask them about the codes for some of us that don’t have any codes yet we won’t have any codes and still around I think she said like the 27th of February or probably the 18th I can’t remember which one but she said I’m not the only one that doesn’t have any codes it’s not to worry you know it’s still being processed it’s not a bad thing she also said for the ones that filed early it doesn’t matter when you follow the one it was accepted they didn’t start doing all this stuff until recent because I doing everybody all at once and everybody has like this number not like anything on the transcript so if you say you’re being processed or you say that it’s being received yours will say accepted and being processed ore processing

  34. Okay, so after being on hold for 58 minutes, this is what I was told… Don’t know if this applies to anyone on here or not but… My husband and I file separately. We get the regular child tax credit, but not ACTC or EIC. I was under the impression that if you just got the regular, yours would not be held till the 15th. According to the lady I talked to (who was was rude and sounded completely miserable BTW) any and all credits are being held. She said I was still processing and that I wouldn’t see a refund till the end of the month. Bummer. Hoping it comes through sooner! … but in all honesty, I think these representatives just make up stuff to tell you so they really don’t have to deal with anyone.

    • THE REP IS LYING BECAUSE I KNOW FOR A FACT MY FRIEND FILED ONE CHILD AND GOT HERS ON YESTERDAY. THEY ARE FULL OF BS AND HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON…HOWEVER I AM STILL WAITING ON MINE TO CHANGE FROM BEING PROCESSED SMH AND I FILED ON THE 26TH…AND MY FRIEND ALSO FILED AFTER ME AND GOT HERS BACK BEFORE ME.

      • You exactly right, one of my co-workers got hers yesterday and she have one child. They feeding them bs when they call.

      • Just passing on the info they gave me. Whether it’s true or not, I don’t know. I feel like they just hired a bunch of untrained people to deal with all the people that would be calling in, and they’re just telling people different stuff because they have no idea what’s going on themselves. I also feel like there is no rhyme or reason to they way they’re processing the returns. So the people that are looking at cycle dates and codes and all that… it doesn’t make a bit of difference. You’ll get it when you get it. It sucks, because like so many others on here, I’m counting on this money coming as soon as possible!
