2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

  1. Anyone with a DDD of 2/23 use Tax Act and/or bank with USAA? Filed back on 13 Jan and was accepted within an hour. Approved on 17 Feb. I have 5 kids and A stepson we claim. So I’m understand it would take longer but usually my bank gets DD way earlier than most. (Also, y’all really should use Tax Act instead of TT. It’s free and 10x better as far as their customer service. Never had an issue with them in the 6 years I’ve been using them.)

    • I agree. TaxAct is great.
I also have a DDD of 2/23 but bank with Chase.
The only time Ive ever received my direct deposit early is if the date fell on a Monday I would get it Saturday.

    • I used Taxact as I have been for years and have the 22nd so far nothing. All the other years though it’s came right on the DD shown to me so I can wait until tomorrow. My bank gets the funds and makes the available the same day. You have to remember, the message says ” your refund will be sent BY said date not on so it can be days early like some people have gotten. I’m not worried about it all. Check tomorrow you might be with the batches going through then.

      • Yeah same here I been using taxact for bout 6 years and never had a problem. I wasn’t expecting anything till tomorrow at the earliest since today was basically their Monday cuz of presidents day so we will see tomorrow.

      • Batches of refunds have been going out since February 15th like the IRS state. They said refunds would be released on the 15th all through the week so they more then likely doing them in batches everyday. You just happen not to be in the batch that is getting it early. I wouldn’t worry at all. I know some people got theirs last Thursday ( not many ) but it was a small batch, then a lot of Friday then today and so fourth. Deposits are going out daily we are just not lucky enough to get it early. it’ll be ok :)

    • I had an offset last year I got a letter in the mail of how much was taken did you see if you have a balance? If it’s not your entire return it should processed as normal timing

      Reply
      • No balance is shown, its like my taxes are just being held. I called the offset people they haven’t gotten the money for the offset. I call the IRS they say the return is being delayed due to the offset but still my return is just there being delayed. I know someone processed it because I can now see my transcripts but just no refund code for the balance left over from the offset and they(IRS) act like it will be world alerting if they give you more information about your return before 21 days. The lady on the phone just kept saying its to early, it’s still to early and im like the 21st day is this Friday. How early can it be? I haven’t received any letters in the mail from the IRS. I filed on 2/5.

I understand your impatience. If you are getting ANY money back thats hopefull. I had $4500 taken i didnt know would be taken imagine planning things around money you never got to see. stay hopeful!

    • So I’ve had 2 offsets last and this year. the one from last year took an additional 2 weeks over half my refund was taken(liberty tax). this year I filed with a Jewish tax company received an offset but instead of taking the money I ended up being owed an additional 300 so an offset can go either way but this year it had no effects for example: my state return came on 2/9/17 it was supposed to come on that date (state). I did not receive a response from the federal until 2/18/17 filed 1/23/17 expected federal is 2/23/17. FYI when I received the state my bank had no pending deposits (capital one) it just was there. Keep in mind student loans can and will offset your return as well. Good luck. We are all in this together.

      • I did a little digging looking for answers like every one here. Yesterday was a holiday. Kool. The business week began today but Friday the refunds began the deposit process. For whatever reason the prepaid cards have a direct link with Santa Barbara so NetSpend being one of there biggest clients some people are still receiving refunds tonight and received them this morning. The banks however most will hold the funds until the 23 why? you ask. Simple it is at the banks discretion ounce the money leaves Santa Barbara which evidently for some it did this morning. Your bank has the money or at least should by tonight , however because your personal bank has the right to do this you may not see a pending transaction 2 days or even the day before but they have the money. chances are you will just have to keep checking your account. The banks are taking full advantage of the PATH act and it is legal for them to do so. Sorry I have capital one and still waiting.

      • That’s your bank not the IRS. Do you get your paychecks early ? They transmit the same way the refunds do. I don’t get mine early every other Friday so I wouldn’t expect your refund early. Plus just like a pay check, payroll is done a week before, processed and prepared for a certain date in their system and gets transmitted that way. Netspend and some others companies get their payroll and refunds early because they pay extra for that to make it look good to customers. They prey on people who don’t have bank accounts, I mean, have you seen their account fees? They charge you if you call for a balance inquiry, they charge you for using an atm on top of the normal atm fees. it’s insane how they nickel and dime you. They can make a deposit happen when ever they just gave you the 22nd as a date with in the other peoples as a batch to go through, operates like a standard payroll system or refund. I know because I was in HR working with payroll and now I work with accounts payable doing refunds to customers. We do it the same way, prepare the refund on a Monday and it gets sent Thursday for a Friday deposit, if it’s mailed that takes another week. it is what it is.

      • The prepaid cards dont have the money when they release it early they just have a email from the irs saying hey your getting so an so money on the such an such date so the prepaid card gives the person the money and regular banks gets the same email but they choose to wait to collect the couple dollars they get to wait sad but all true …but think reg banks gives so many advantages like loans, overdrafts, checks, place where you can walk in an get you money were if u loose ur prepaid card you gotta wait weeks to get your hard earned money so count your blessings an remember you might have to wait till the actual DDD but you have so much security having a normal bank that others that has prepaid cards does not. KEEP YA’ll HEAD UP TRUST IN ✒GOD an everything will work out for you in the end..YOUR WILL COME AN BEFORE YOU YOUR IT YOU WILL B AT THE GETTING YOUR AN GOING SHOPPING FOR A

  12. Did anyone have a DDD of 2/23 & have capital one get theirs yet?
Also does “paying fees to turbo tax” mean that that’s their fee for doing your taxes?
If so, if you let me take their fee out from your refund does that affect when it’ll come in?

    • I have capital one and a DD of 2/23 and have yet to receive my refund :/
Yes if you agreed to the fees then the fees will be taken out either you paid for it with a debit/credit card or you requested it be taken out of your refund.
If you requested it be taken out of your refund it will first go to Santa Barbara Bank to pay for your tax filing services and it will show you your deposit date to your bak account on file IF they have received your funds yet. :)

  13. I am passed fed up. I filed a month and one day ago. I have three kids and the IRS has 1/3 of my last year’s income. I need that money. My bank can’t even tell me anything until the money is available in my account. This is a joke.

    • My federal return was accepted on January 12. I have 2 kids and I have yet to receive my return also. When I track my return online, I do not even have a status bar anymore. It just says Your tax return is still being processed.

A refund date will be provided when available.

    • I used H&R Block for many years & last year after I paid them over $480 to do my taxes, I vowed to NEVER use them crooks again! I used TT this year for only $100. H&R Block is nothing but thieves! They rack on charges & interest over absolutely everything! They are white collar scandalous crooks! They will never get another dime from me! Good luck with your refund though! I hope we all get it asap!

      • Mine is expected to be in my account on the 23rd I still haven’t heard anything yet but I did call the H&R Block and they said that my refund should have already been sent so I don’t know what to do

      • They are all crooks. I charge my friends $10. There’s nothing difficult about it. You should do your own.

  15. This is weird I spoke with an IRS rep last week and the lady was sweet and told me that I have a deposit date of 2/23 I call again this morning and this lady was also sweet and told they won’t have information until 21 days after my return was accepted I’m sooooo confused

  16. I have seen a few people get their refund sooner than the specified “release date”. Does TT notify you when their bank receives your refund? How soon does their bank send your $$ to your bank?

    • Yes i bank with Wells Fargo and my deposit date shows 02/22nd as well. I called this morning and they said they don’t show anything pending.

      • If you file through TurboTax you can log on to this website taxpayer.sbtpg.com. Do not put www in front of that address. Skip step one and go directly to step 2. You must know your refund amount and filling status (marrie, single) .

        Reply
      • You have to make sure you put the right social dollar amount and filing status or else it will give an error message. The dollar amount should be in whole numbers and not including change.

  24. Good morning all,

I just called my bank (credit union) to see if they have any deposit pending for taxes? They said as of now no and then they asked me what day was I expecting it, I told her 02/23 and she looked and she said she see it but the monies are not released until that day but if the funds become available before they will release it immediately so everyone who’s worried like I was call your bank let them know the exact date your expecting your money so they can do a internal search. I feel way better that at least the funds are confirmed. Sorry for the grammar i’m driving and felt that I needed to share TT user.

  25. Still NO DATE, WMR directs me to call, I call. NO ANSWER phone keeps saying all reps are busy and then you get sent in a loop to call this number and give this ext number. Over and OVER AGAIN! But what else can you do but sit and wait, who do you complain to about the way the IRS is handling or NOT handling this situation? NO ONE! Glad to see some are getting their refunds though.

      • Mines says the same thing. At first when I filed on the January 24 I checked the next couple of days it was fine I had bars and everything. Now it just says that message, but people around me and that I know have dates. I was wondering if it has not been updated and maybe it will still drop because of the amount of returns that they have to process.

    • Mine says the same thing. I called the IRS today I was accepted on 2/1 filed with both those credits. She told me due to the Path Act those refunds won’t be sent out till the 27th. She said I was approved, but on hold to be released
