2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

  1. I filed my taxes on feb 5. Head of household with a dependent in college. I’m not required to file taxes because I’m on SSDI but I need to file taxes so we can do the FAFSA for financial aid. I qualified for the American Opportunity credit but have not received my refund as of yet. And all the IRS website tells me is that they have received my return and it’s being processed.

  2. I filed my taxes using Turbo Tax and filed head of household claiming my 5 year old son. I am a single mother who efiled. My return was accepted January 27 by IRS. The State deposited into my account on 2/15. I still have not recieved my Federal. The wheres my refund is giving me false information that my refund was sent to my bank. No such deposit made. I hear that there is a delay with the federal but why give false information? i’ve tried all the #’s to reach them and all i get is the automated system.. If there was something wrong with my tax why not an email / letter mailed to my attention or even a phone call. Even at IRS.GOV why not keep the people informed?

    • This happend to me last year! I got a hold of turbo tax and they said I must’ve put a wrong number on my account information and not even a week later my check came in the mail without a single letter or idea that it wouldn’t be direct deposit! Good luck.

    • You don’t use the 2016 return for FAFSA. The window for FAFSA opened in October this year and you’re supposed to use 2015 return. Trust me, I know. I’m a high school counselor!

    • I also have the same situation where the website said that it was deposited on March 1st and I still have not received it in my account. Called the bank and they said they haven’t received it. Made sure I rechecked my routing number and account number on my Turbo tax information. Just sucks when you are a single mother and relying on that money to be in there on that date and not there. How do you find out what’s going on??!! Grrrr

  3. MAJOR UPDATE:
Ok so some of you may have seen a couple of my posts and here is the whole run down…
I filed January 24th, 2017 and was accepted the same day…I filed two child credits, head of household…Was told I had to wait until the 15th for Path act to release my return and start processing….Ever since the 15th, with each big update, My status remained with the dreaded ” We have received your tax return and it is being processed.” I called the IRS 4 times and each time I was told that there was nothing wrong, no red flags, NOTHING! On the last call, I was told that I should wait until the 27th for the next big update, and I should get a date…ok…cool….27th comes around….guess what….NO DATE!!! so finally instead of waiting, I called that very morning on the 27th, and was finally told I had been selected for review and that I would be getting A CP05 notice pretty much stating that they needed to review my return and once they were satisfied they would release it within 60 days….I THINK NOT! so now that I finally have the answer of what was really going, I went ahead and followed some advice to talk to a tax advocate…Today, I called, and explained my situation of hardship, (eviction and Car repossession) and that I really needed to find a quicker way to release my funds….She of course verified my identity, and placed me on hold, she then returned with a pin number and transferred me to another rep, I was on hold for about 1hour and half, and finally the other rep picked up and asked for my transfer pin, (given by prior representative)….once given, He again verified my identity and put me on a brief hold to research my account….Come to find out, my return was put on review because My income was not available in the system at the time my return was accepted to be verified….WOW REALLY? so he looked at everything and said everything matched up and nothing was wrong and that the tax advocate should have no problem in lifting the hold on my return…By March 6th I was told my tax advocate would contact and begin the process of resolving my hold, and that I should have my return within the next 2 weeks…its still a while but its better than 60 days! so to everyone experiencing this, get a tax advocate! im so relieved!!!!

  6. I’m having same issue. I e-filed on Jan 27th. By chance did all of you file through turbo tax like me? We qualified for EIC and additional child tax credit. I called and the IRS guy said I will be receiving a letter in the mail. We have serious plans for this money. I’m definitely not using turbo tax anymore. I’m gonna file on the IRS website from now on. Have any commenters received anything since your post or even a letter?

    • I Filed the same way the previous individual did and on january, 19th and it was a simple return nothing to it just 1 child to claim nothing else. Well it has been filed, accepted, and now it still says that it is still processing. Seriously? What is the hold up I dont understand like many others we have serious plans with that money but with a majority of planned on paying some important bills well now we have become delinquet with a few things to where were now in deeper water then we were before. I would think that the returns that just make no since at all with the possibility of being fraudulant would be looked at more carefully not all the normal ones who every year for the past 10 yrs have filed the same status, same kid, same job, same address, i mean nothing on our returns change and so why now are they having to further examine ours? I just dont and never will understand this country the reasoning for why they do things to the american people. Did you guys know that in london actually all of europe their tax’s are filed for them automatically they dont have to do anything like what we have to do! I wonder if that’s better?

      • Call the IRS tax advocate tomorrow morning. Let them know you are in a hardship. Then after verifying your identity, you will be transferred to an actual advocate. Be prepared to be on hold for at least an hr and a half. I was on hold this evening for 2 hrs to get a message they were closed. It’s my understanding you will or should have ur refund in two weeks, but they closed before I finished the process. Good luck to u and ur family.

  7. we filed our return on Feb 7th and it was accepted the same day. We just got our State return direct deposited into our bank account today but have yet to hear anything from Federal. This seems really odd to me. In years past we would get our Federal return weeks before the State return. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Very frustrating, this has never happened to me before and I have been using the same online efile system of taxact for 10 years now with direct bank deposit.

      • I HAVE BEEN USING TAXACT FOR 10 YEARS TOO, AND I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. MY RETURN WAS ACCEPTED FEDERAL AND STATE ON THE 16TH. Now it’s just stuck there. I requested a transcript and despite my phone being registered to me for over 12 years they said it couldn’t be verified with AT&T so I am waiting for a letter. We have slowly been seeing a decline in our refunds over the years, but this year it is so small it’s like I can’t believe that some people get back $12000 and they are holding mine up. You would think those big ones would be the ones that took longer. I suppose I will just keep waiting like everyone here.

  11. Filed Jan. 19th via Turbo Tax. Married-Jointly. Accepted same day. Showed several days on WMR site of being received, then got the PATH Act notice until morning of Feb. 16th. Checked already this morning (3-1-17) and still showing that my refund has been received and is being processed. Last year took 17 days from acceptance to refund being deposited, but I keep hoping for a quicker turnaround this year, already at day 14 since Feb. 15.

What I don’t understand is that while the IRS may’ve had to hold EITC and ACTC refunds until Feb. 15th what was stopping them from processing those returns as soon as they came in, and then having the returns ready to release on the 16th??? Typical government/bureaucracy nonsense.

  15. I just got off the phone with the IRS a little bit ago (including wait time, just over an hour–but that was after a 1 1/2 hour phone call with the Social Security department…my brain is tired). Is anyone else having problems with this process because of change in filing status? The online customer service system refuses to acknowledge my new status (single–recently divorced), which is how I filed this year. The system only lets me register as filing joint at my old family address–no information about 2016 filing is available. The woman at the IRS said it probably never would be without calling and requesting each report–she said I can never have a new “single status” account because I’ll never be able to use my new status due to it being being licked to the same Social Security number as my old status. Basically, I am eternally married in the IRS system (that news didn’t excite my ex-wife very much). Because of this, I can’t get any information on my returns/refund for this year. I was accepted on Feb 17–but even the record of that seems to be gone now, but all she could tell me was that the money I still owed for last year was not paid by my refund yet and didn’t know if it would be. Nothing else. • When I got divorced and filed head of household the following year, I got audited. They told me I got audited because for years it was married filing jointly and due to the sudden change, they wanted to know why. After explaining to them that I was no longer married, they continued to process my return but they had to start from the beginning and it was going to take 8-12 weeks to receive my refund!
I file head of household now and have for 5 years without any other problems.

I had an offset back then so I never looked for refunds just sent my stuff and went on with my life. I mailed in the copy I have saved for that year and who knows what will happen now. Knowing the IRS they will find some way to keep as much of the refund I need badly as possible even though I should’ve got almost 3k of a refund for 2012 it was due to child tax and EIC credits. I got my refund last year no issues so it seems they waited until just after I can’t claim the refund and sent notice over 3 years later rather than sending this notice for the 2013-2015 tax years? Like that’s not totally obv so mad

  20. I submitted mine in the beginning of January and had to wait until the February 15th date. People who have filed after me and also had to wait until the 15th have received theirs, however mine still have yet to be processed. I somehow always get this issue. They don’t process in the order it was received but randomly. I filled electronically through HR Block by the way. I may file with someone else next year to see if it goes faster.

        • Well, I’m glad yet sad to see that I’m not the only one who this is happening too…..how freaking long does it take to process!! I did mine on 2/7 and its still processing!! I did my sisters days after mine and she got a refund yesterday!! WTH!!!

    • I did mine with liberty on 2/6 e-filed I was told that I may get it the 15th then the week of 27 the only message I have is being processed…. it’s now Thursday of week 27th lol and nothing yet very much looking forward to getting my money back???

  21. My husband filed on Feb 3rd. The where’s my refund thing has only ever said: your return is being processed. Eic credit..people we know filed after us claiming the same already have their refund. Already got our state. No codes, no nothing. We called our tax professional and found out there is nothing wrong except..it has been approved but no send date?! She said she doesn’t know why bc there is usually a send date. No notices in the mail. This is ridiculous that no one can tell us anything.

  23. In the WMR gave the code 1541, I understand that code may mean that there is only a delay because the system can not generate all the tax returns. I am head of household I have two young children. I depend on these taxes especially since I take out extra just for a bigger chunk back. If I have to pay taxes on time, why can’t the government give is our money back on time? This is very frustrating, today is the 28th and still says “take action” and code 1541.

Went back and forth for 40 mins with full name, DOB, SSAN, verification of parents’ names, address verification and how long have I resided at address. Was told to have 2015 and 2016 filing available, W2s available and documents regarding school interest. They stated that they will send me a “letter” and to make sure that all documentation is available when I call them.

        Any theories?

They mention I might have fail into the delay category for the earning income credit or child tax credit it was saying there not releasing those till this week although on where my refund online says it has already been sent to bank. My boyfriend did his same day same time as mine and got DDD on feb 23rd as well and he got his already im not sure if it because he owed unemployment so they might have been pushy about there portion so that may be why he received his already i don’t know. But I’m starting to worry.

  27. Hi. I just tried to order transcripts but I have N/A listed for this year’s return. But if I check the transcripts for the account, it shows the $2800 I owed for last year (an amended return) as being a 0.00 balance. Does this mean that the $2800 has been taken from this year’s refund–even though I can’t find any evidence of there being a refund approved for this year? Somewhere they seem to have found $2800 to cover past taxes–seems like it has to be from this year’s return. Sorry if this sounds confusing–but it is!!! This year’s tax season has been an emotional rollercoaster and I’m getting some severe motion sickness. Please, any insight would be greatly appreciated

    • It would have to be from the 2016 tax year return. FYI, if they did use part or all of your return to offset a previous tax liability, you will get the remainder of the funds in a PAPER check. It will not be DD.

Checked on 2/16 there was a red exclamation point in a yellow box no tax topic just a message saying there is a delay processing your return I read the website and saw that there were delays for families claiming Eic hopefully that’s all but I called and received the same message and tomorrow will be 21 days so we will see but I have only seen one other person that received that devilish exclamation point Patience is a virtue that I have but these bald tires might not last that long But I wish there was more info on that with no tax topic code we will see

I have the same exclamation mark that says TAKE ACTION SEE BELOW FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON YOUR REFUND. aLL IS SAYS “bELOW” IS There is a delay in processing your tax return. There is no code no anything. However, it also says, if you have a question contact us. When I click on the “contact us” portion of that statement it takes me to a page with Reference Number 1541. It’s been the same now for 2 weeks, and I have not received a letter either. Anyone?

I did keep in mind that returns wont be released until after the 15th and that most returns will be sent out the week of the 27th. IRS sent me a letter in the mail basically saying that I had to verify some information, just for safety. The form was a 4883c form. I had to call them and give them very little information. I was told everything was verified and that I should continue to check the “were’s my Refund tool.” Well today is the 27th, and I havent heard anything and the WMR tool still say’s ” We are proccessing your refund.). I try to call but it’s unsuccessful. I hope everything is okay. People like myself depend on this money for bills.
