2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

    • Mine was accepted on Feb 14. I got both of my state refunds within a week, but it’s now March 16 and my federal return is “still processing” with no projected refund date.

  4. I’ve about had it! I filed 1/20 was accepted 1/23 and here it is 3/15 and it still says it’s being processed! I even talked to the bank and they said that there wasn’t a hold on my account and I still have to wait until 3/17 to call the IRS again! This is just nuts! My son sent his in 1/30 and got his back by 2/16. No, neither of us filed any different as we usually do so there is a problem somewhere! When I talked to the IRS they told me that I wasn’t going to get a letter or anything just to “be patient” processing is taking longer than it should. This is just nuts!!!

  6. Return was e-filed with TurboTax and accepted Feb 8th. Have not received an update as of March 14th. The IRS site still says “your tax return is still being processed, a refund date will be provided when available.” On March 10th, I called a number that actually connected me with a real person at the IRS and after a vigorous verification process ( tax returns have multiple addresses because I’ve lived many places) they still couldn’t tell me what was taking so long to complete my processing. No letter, no anything.

    • I’m dealing with the same issue filed February 1st. I was told my return was accepted by the IRS around February 18th or so. Now it’s saying “your return is being processed.” This is absolutely absurd to do to the American people.

      • I am same Filed on TurboTax 2/10 w/EiC and it always shows still processing. We called right before spring break I think on 3/10 and got pushed around on the phone finally they said their processing server was down when we filed and it is corrected and being processed now. Then gave the same response they always give which is wait 30 days to call again and it can take another 60 days………Needless to say it still says processing and no date given. We got no letter and they said nothing was wrong with the return even talked to fraud dept to make sure. Am I ever going to see this money?

    • Hi Alfred, our submission dates are almost the same (2/4) and I haven’t received my refund either. We haven’t made any changes…same home, same jobs, same kids…but no sign of our refund yet. I guess I’ll call tomorrow since it’s way overdue. Good luck!

Called 2/13 at 21 days and was told I needed to verify id in office she sent me out a letter while I was on hold. If I wouldn’t have called I would have never known that I was flagged for identity theft. I’ve seen many other people that haven’t gotten the identity letters until they call in.

    • I electronically filed the 27th of jan accepted the 29th. Nothing till letter came saying call to verifying identity. I called and answered specific private questions only i would know. they said it was great and they would process it. I called back when no change. I spoke to a woman that said the first woman didnt verify correctly and id recieve another letter. I called back again and they said the second lady was wrong and it was verified correctly and id get a letter after the 13th of march. I recieved it and it said i have to just do nothing and wait till april 27th now. It states after that ill get a check or another letter.
It seems to me they have their heads up their butts and are trying to just buy time because we dont have the man power or smarts working for the irs. So two letters and three people spoken to and all its saying is wait. It really dies suck that nothing can be done about it.

  14. Filed my taxed on 2/3. Was unaware that my husband still had his health insurance after we had canceled it the year prior, but it was valid until mid year 2016 without our knowledge. The refund bar disappeared like 2/20 or so. Received letter on 2/24 asking for 1095 A form and 8962 form. Faxed it on 2/25 with the accounting firm that I had originally done my taxes with. Was told it would take 6-8 weeks for refund. As of 3/11 the topic152 link appeared and the amount that was originally stated there disappeared, wasn’t like that on 3/10. There is no bar just says it is still process. Does anyone know how long after that did they get their refund?

I’m so grateful for this message board, it’s been like a support group. I saw a bunch of people had their WMR updated to 3/15 as well. I hope all of you get the money you need and I hope it helps you out in whatever way. Thanks guys!

  19. Hello,
I filed my return on 2/22 and my return was accepted by the IRS on 2/22 with Tax Topic 152. My WMR path/bar has been on “RETURN RECEIVED” since 2/22 with absolutely no changes. It’ll be 21 days in 3/15. Just wondering if anyone has any insight on this…thank you.

  20. Used turbo tax….Filed and accepted on February 2….. I called turbo tax and IRS yesterday and they both said the it’s the EIC delay and just keep waiting. Today mail came and it was a letter from IRS to verify my identity. I called and took care of everything…Lady says I’m good to go. However she also said it can be another 9 weeks. Yes bills are still being paid and I know I shouldn’t count on it but I need to get my new glasses. Mine been taped up for 3 weeks now!

For those who had to verify their identity…. How long did it take you to get ur return?

    • I had to verify my identity as well .I was also told it could take an additional 9 weeks, this is just crazy making us wait longer when we have been identified.

  21. Filed my taxes through TurboTax mid Jan, had both state and Federal refunds back before end of Jan. Filed my sons the same way, had to file and amended federal return because he got a w2 for a short job we forgot he had and he got his direct deposit AND his paper federal correction amount check by mid-Feb. My fiance on the other hand….filed his taxes Feb 4 with TT, was rejected once because of a typo so I fixed if and it was accepted the next day. He got his state refund a week and a half later…..but here it is March 10th and all the WRM app keeps saying is that his return is “being processed”. No code, nothing. Hes getting frustrated and so am I.

    • I filed on Jan 28…I don’t have any messages or codes. It just says “Being processed” Not sure what to do???? It’s 3-15-17! WHERE’S MY REFUND!!!

  22. I received that letter where I have verify who I am as well. So I called and verified who I was March 1 and I asked why do I have to verify who I am because I had to submit stuff for them to continue processing my amended return for 2015. The young lady told me that I was randomly selected and that everyone does not have to verify who they are. But we did the verification process and I was good to go and that I should receive my return soon. Well I still have not received it. So I called this morning and a nice gentleman by the name of Gary told me that my federal taxes was received and then placed on hold until I verified who I was. When I called and verified and passed verification, my refund began processing. So now I have to wait up to an additional 9 weeks before I receive my refund.

In all honesty, the IRS does not care about rent that needs to be paid or any other bills. The IRS does not care that you are homeless or anything else. It is sad that it has come to this because people are out their committing fraud on their taxes and the rest of us honest people have to suffer because of their actions. I served my country for 12 years before being medically discharged due to injury. I worked hard for my money and I pay my taxes. We honest should not have to go through this!

  24. I filed my refund through turbotax and my refund was accepted by the IRS on 1/28/2017, I received a letter in the mail February 14th from the IRS asking for forms 1095-a and 8962. I mailed them out the next day. I called the IRS a few days ago to see what’s taking so long as it’s now March 9th and they could not even tell me if they received the forms or not. They did however tell me that the WMR tool will never change until the date I get my refund under this situation. They told me that there is nothing they can’t even research what is going on with my refund until 8 weeks has passed if I still have not gotten it. I feel like I’m in Limbo.

    • This happened to me last year, and turbo tax assured me that this year it would not be an issue and it will all be attached to the return filed electronically. which it seems this year i did not have this issue. But last year the irs suggested when I spoke to them on the phone that to fax it only with the letter. I suggest you call and get a tax advocate and have them check for you. Dont fax it now until you know from the advocate that it is not there.. My son’s is in the same wait like you. His 1095A was incorrect so we entered the info the correct way and called marketplace to send an amended one to the irs. They had it stated he had marketplace insurance longer than he did so we could not show the tax credit for those months or it would of came back as more refund in his case which they down the road would of caught. so now the consequence of doing it correctly is wait on still a letter which you did get but he has not yet! Hope your processes soon and refund is sent.

    • Yes, I am having the same issue. I filed mine on Feb 22 still nothing, no bar keeps saying your tax return is still being processed. Turbo tax says it has been accepted, but nothing on WMR site.

      • I filed my taxes 2/17 with HRBlock.com, with direct deposit for my refund. As of 2/18 they were showing as accepted on the HRBlock website. I checked a few days later on the WMR site, it said processing, no bars, nothing else. It has been that way ever since. It is 21 days today, nothing. :(

  27. I called the IRS international number as I am currently in Mexico City. I’m actually stranded here and without any money. The IRS accepted my return on 1/17. My WMR has said “We have received your refund and it is being processed,” since 2/15. I did have the EIC so I’m aware refunds weren’t to be received till the week of 2/27. The representative said I should have received a 4464c letter in the mail last week. I have not. My housemates have been checking for me. He also said no action is needed an my return looks fine. I asked to be referred to a Tax Advocate for a 911 situation. He did so and was very thorough and helpful. I should be hearing from an advocate in the next few days. I’ll keep you all posted. Fingers crossed for everyone to get the money they need in the time they need.

  28. I filed and it was received and accepted on Jan 17th. It’s now march 9th and still nothing. Says it’s still processing. I called and talked to an IRS rep. And they said there was a system error on their end. Nothing wrong with return and can take up to 8 weeks to fix itself. But no action can be taken until then which will be April 19th. It’s 8 weeks from when the error occurred which was on feb 22nd.

    • You can call the IRS 1800 # ending in 1040 and talk to a rep and the will let you know if the. 8962 form corrected your return. And from the date it was corrected it will take up to 8 weeks for your return to finish getting processed. They say its usually not that long. I just had the same problem and sent the correct paperwork back to them on Feb 15th and it got corrected by the IRS march 8th which was yesterday. Im hoping its not a 8 week wait. If I don’t recieve my return my may 3rd. The IRS said to call back. We’ll see fingers crossed. Hope this was helpful.

    • I’m having the exact same issue! Ours was filed on Feb 22nd (not sure exact accepted date) and we still have a “processing return” on our status. I’m hoping it’s a mistake and will just pop up in our account on Friday! If not, I guess I’ll be calling next week. :/

  33. We can’t even get a TAS rep to even listen to us. They say because we had applied for a tax advance through h&r block that they couldn’t help us. (We were denied for the advance) Now we’re about to lose everything. Why can’t they help us? Was that rep lying? Is there anything else we can do?

Called Tax advocate today, because last wed when I called they told me to wait until Monday to call back for an update. I waited until today and then called…she looked up the status of my case created for me on last week, and told me that the IRS had already responded to my case yesterday, and removed my hold this morning and inserted the code for the deposit (846) THIS MORNING AS WELL!!! She said it takes about 4 to 5 business days for WMR to update with date after code has been inputted..by next wed I should have a date (or money) and stated to call just to follow up! I pray all goes well!!!

  38. **Update:
Filed Feb.6th accepted Feb.7th. Website said its approved my return and ddd Feb.27th. I contacted the irs and they said nothing was wrong. Finally got a letter in the mail Monday stating I didn’t file form 1040 for 2014 tax return. I am assuming that is the hold up. I filed my 1040 for 2014 Feb.6th but had to mail it in, which takes longer.
    Hope this helps.

    • I am going through the same thing, only its my 2013 they are waiting for. I was able to fax in my 2013 though since I mailed my initial 2013 1040 to the wrong IRS address. I would call and see if they accept a fax for your return. I was told that as soon as they see I don’t owe anything on my 2013 they will immediately(the IRS’ version of immediately) release my 2016 deposit. The fax takes 5-7 for them to receive, mailed in can take 6 to 12 weeks for processing.

      • How do I know if they accept a fax. I sent mine in Feb. 6th. If I already sent it in so i need to fill that paper out or just wait 4 them to notify me

      • You should have received a CP63 letter. There is a number in the right upper corner of the paper that has a number to call. I am not sure if the number is the same for everyone but since your issue is like mine, this is the number they gave me 1-866-897-3315. The rep was nice and helpful. HOWEVER, I was on hold for over 2 hours. You have to ASK them what you want to know, they will not give you information.

      • Hi Im having the same issue. I received 2 different notices to provide my 2013 tax returns after I mailed them I noticed both notices had different addresses to mail my return to. I called and was told either address will work but they still arent showing that they’ve received my return and its been several weeks now. Do you still have the fax number you used? Have yoy received your refund as of yet? Thanks!!

    • Mines says the same I filed on Feb. 2nd accepted on the same day & still a delay in my refund, I’ve called the IRS multiple times & was told different things. First that yes I am under review & on a 60 day hold & a lettter will be sent out. Still no letter. Then I call today I’m told no action is required on my behalf it’s just a delay & I’ll get a generic letter in the mail stating it’s a delay in my refund no dd date as of yet. This is very frustrating to say the least.
