2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

U definitely have the right to ur opinion. I also agree all we can do is wait. I don’t however, understand how u can start a post with no offense, & then cont to insult another. Obviously u mean offense. People are finding answers in Jazzy’s postings. So why be a negative nilly? If ur frustrated with postings & have nothing constructive to add, then u should not read this thread. Or counter an incorrect post post w/ a correction past wait or contact an advocate.

And for the negative people who keep saying we already knew the policy change. Dam right we did. But even for the one’s without those credits what’s the IRS excuse for them. I have all the credits. Hell I want my coins. I’m even pist for the one’s without the credits that’s waiting on approval and DDD.

  8. No offense Jazzy, but I am getting really annoyed of Jazzy responding to everyone’s comments. I like to see what everyone else have to say too. She is just another person waiting on a tax return . This person cannot help you and half the advice she gives is WRONG because every one of our situation is different.

    You have two options:

    1) Wait.
    2) Contact the Tax Advocate at 1-877-777-4778 (tell them you have a utility disconnection notice in writing and you about to be evicted.

If someone ask a question I don’t think they have a problem with WHO answer back, if they did they would say so or direct it to a specific person. This is a forum…why are you jealous? Geez…some people. I will continue to respond if I see no one else has…if you don’t like it,….you can go visit another site. BE PATIENT…SMH. LOL.

  12. Hello,
Been reading forum since I filed on 01/23 accepted 1/24. Able to order return transcript 2 weeks ago. I was under the impression that meant it had been processed. Called IRS today. Said I thought since I got the PATH mess it meant my return was processed & just waiting for DD. She sd it meant my taxes were on hold til 15th 2 be processed & they are being told 2 tell people the 27th still looks good. No help. Why can I order a return transcript if its being processed still

    Reply
    • sweetb, The PATH message meant on HOLD, the transcript gives you the cycle code and let you know where they are in the process. You are DONE processing…just can’t release the funds until this morning….keep checking for code 846 and you will know it has went to your bank…then it is on your bank to complete the process. They are asking us to give them until the 18th for DDD on the WMR…but some of us could see DDD as far as the 27th. I hope we are not in that group…ugh.

      • Yeah, I can’t answer those questions lol. I dont have online access, because I do not have a phone in my name. I went through the automated system. I had a different address this year then last, so I assumed when my new address was registering in the system for 2016 taxes, that was good enough and did not follow through with actually ordering the transcript, since ordering it wouldn’t make a diff anyway when I received it. Now I wished I had ordered it lol.

    • Do you have code 150, 806 766, 768? you don’t have to had the 806 then you are DONE…they have processed your return…they are not just starting too…just starting to release…over the next 2 weeks. Many will see DDD by Friday…then we will know how things are going once people start posting their updates…tomorrow and Friday will help us understand how IRS is rolling this release out…so crazy uh?

So, let’s give them the benefit of the doubt that it is true…and just watch for posts for many who can confirm their refunds indeed got posted by Saturday. Then we can BASH them ALL OVER AGAIN FOR LYING…LOL

    • Kelli, we are all in the same boat today. But I can assure you, things are moving in the right direction. Just keep an eye on your bank account. online transcript and the WMR tomorrow when it updates..up until Saturday. You can always call IRS today thru Saturday if it will help ease your mind. If it has not been 21 days tell them you were instructed to contact from the WMR and you don’t recall the code it gave you…that will force them to look at your return ok. (800) 829-0582 ext. 652.

    • Amber, yes IRS website says 16-18….but refunds are being release to banks today. So some people will see deposits today. UPDATES are tomorrow until Saturday for the WMR. Transcripts updates 24/7 Real TIME…to see if you have the code 846.

      • Jazzy is it possible that my refund may be deposited before the code on my transcript changes to 846? My cycle date is 20170605. I filed and was accepted feb 1 but I don’t have the 846 code on my transcript yet. Thanks :-)

      • Instead of Path message I now have return has been received and being processed. I was able to order my transcripts 2/5/17 and received in mail 2/13/17 but no 846 code is on there.

  19. toya, we are ALL waiting to see how they are going to release the PATH refunds. We all were caught in the FREEZE and of course things are different because we are ALL stuck in the backlogs…until today. So you are not saying anything new to us. We understand exactly how this PATH affected this year deposits and delays…I am just confused why you keep referring to “transcripts” as if this is the driving factor to when refunds will be released. Please let every call IRS themselves.

    • Update Feb 16th – The IRS is now processing refunds which were originally being held up due to the PATH mandates. Keeping checking WMR for updates and exact dates on your refund payment. You should no longer be seeing the PATH message as a blocker to get your refund processed and paid. If held up for other reasons (see below) you will get the applicable message/follow-up action.

  21. Sorry guys, the traffic is so high this morning, it is very difficult to get in and respond to post. I am trying to get thru it took an hour to get my first (4) post thru :-(. So, when this one post; the best advice I can say is please call IRS this morning and they will tell you whether or NOT your refund is one of those who has already been released…this will go on over a period of (4) days. From the 15-18 the majority refunds will hit the banks….if no movement by Sat…Tues next update…

  22. People listen, I know it makes all of us feel a little better when we share information but a lot of information on this site has been wrong, I called the transcript department, 18008290922 they can provide you accurate information regarding your refund and it’s quicker, because of PATH, they are not going by the transcripts this year that cycle count doesn’t mean anything THIS YEAR, she looked at my account told me I was accepted on the 27th, during the ‘freeze period’, refunds were just sittin

    • continued- Also those that are affected by PATH/child tax credit. the IRS worker just said our tax returns are JUST NOW BEING PROCESSED, she said we probably won’t see an update until Friday or Monday, she said there are millions that have been affected by PATH, and she also said the cycle count if it wasn’t a delay you could have went by it, example 20170505, means I would have gotten my refund by Feb 5,2017, because IRS are doing things different, don’t go by transcript, she was kind of frustr

    • i was accepted the 28th and still nothing. I wonder if mine fell under the same thing. Did they say when yours will be processed? I’m just a single person, no EITC or ACTC…this wait has deff been longer than usual. Been sitting at the accepted stage forever…still not approved. My coworker filed after me i think and she got a DD today for her federal. Same thing…single person, no dependents or claims.

    • toya, a LOT of information are you referring to is wrong? I don’t think that is very nice to imply we are giving wrong information. We are here to share and uplift each other not tear each other down and that is what is appears you are here to do. Sorry you don’t agree with some of our posts but we are all adults here and understand we ourselves can call IRS just like you. We are sharing our knowledge, experience and maybe some speculation or theories. No one claim to be 100% on the money.

  23. The IRS said Tuesday 2/14 that the page will be updated with projected deposit dates for early EITC and ACTC refund filers a few days after Wednesday, February 15. Before February 18, some taxpayers may see a projected deposit date or an intermittent message that the IRS is processing their return.

By law, the IRS is required to hold EITC and ACTC refunds until February 15.

    • Waiting…they actually are releasing funds today to banks…it is up to the bank from this point on to process and post in accounts. IRS is asking the majority of us to give them to the 18th to see movements. WMR suppose to start updating in the morning until the 18th with DDD…but deposits are on the way to banks…today. Who knows what IRS is telling everyone, different things perhaps…smh. I am going to be patient and give them till Saturday before I freak out…lmbo.

    • Sha and Tia, not sure if IRS is batching them by first in, first out. But banks are different and have different posting times and processing time. Credits, vs Banks vs Prepaid …..that may be why some are getting theirs sooner than others, it may not be on IRS in…now if you both have the same BANK/Institution then perhaps IRS is not processing them in the order they were submitted and accepted. Freak out by Saturday if you see no movement…I AM…lol.

    • Amanda, join the party…we are all waiting to see how this PATH thing play itself out over the next few days…up until 27th. Those without the path should be on the phone calling IRS. I call this morning at 7AM and talked to (3) reps and they all said funds are being released this morning…and one told me MINES did not show a release yet…(sad face)…it is early in the day so I won’t panic yet…my bank deposit around 11am – 3pm and I am going to keep checking my transcript for 846 code

    • Amanda, what you said you haven’t been accepted yet? Ouch…uhmmmmm can you order your account transcript yet? Did you get a confirmation when you filed it? That happen to someone else and they called IRS and they confirm they had her return and was processing it….she didn’t get an accepted either..weird. Give them a call…I bet it is there and going thru the process…check to ease your mind…I would be concerned as well.

TODAY, this exact moment, IRS started at 7am actually RELEASING REFUNDS! NOT TO THE TREASURY BUT TO THE TAXPAYERS. Some could see pending deposits throughout today. But may not see ANY updates on the WMR until After the system update in the morning by 6am. BIG SYSTEM UPDATE IS TOMORROW! The path msg she did not know if it will disappear she did not

  31. The government knows what they are doing. Calling them and speaking with someone will only make you madder, although its their job to answer question, and help you understand they still treat you nasty. The government knows people use this refund money to get out debt or help in some kind way with their families. However, they will always come up with anything to hurt low income families. Fraud is their excuse, but what they fail to realize is that a thief will always find away.

  32. cont: to PROCESS your money when it hits the bank. Check your transcript online when you see the 846 code you know your bank has your refund and is processing it. I called (800) 829-0582 ext. 652 got from 7am -7:35 (5-10 min ea) 3x. For those of you still having “still processing…..I think you should be on the phone with IRS to see what is holding up your return. Everyone else…worries are over; but be prepared to NOT see your refund right away it may take up to the 27th (LATEST)….not AFTER

      • driving me crazy, have you tried telling them you were instructed to call on the WMR and that you don’t recall what the code was so this is why you call so find out why your refund is pending….ask if they need to verify anything. You have to keep calling until you get a nice person that will actually look into it…once you say the WMR instructed you to contact them, they have to look…good luck.

      • Jazsley, it would be the last code under the 766, 768…when they finally update and release. When you see that, you know it is at your bank or in route…ok.

  33. cont: work in the system dept. So please don’t panic the refunds ARE being released TODAY! Between now and the 27th the money will be in your bank accounts. So who get there first, 2nd, 3rd, who knows unless they post the good news. Banks makes deposit all day you guys. IRS is not a payroll check that goes in at Midnight. IRS checks are deposit ALL. Last year I got my deposit at 11am. I assure you all, the refunds are hitting the banks…no matter if the WMR update or NOT. Now it is on your BANK

  35. Good morning,
Here we are 2/15th. I had a processing date of 2/13/2017 on my transcripts with code 20170405. I figured I would wake up with a deposit to my account. WRONG!! The WMR is unavailable. I called the IRS to checking the status.. it has not been updated either. It look as if we all waited for nothing. No change to anything.

    • Yes, I’m in the same boat. NO codes in WMR, only says – “We’ve received your return and it is processing”…. Ordered my return transcripts last Friday afternoon… The next day my WMR status changed to the verbiage above and tax code 152 went away… Still NO new tax codes so I don’t know what is going on. Any ideas?!?!

I will say this, I know if you went to a Tax Prep Company(HRBlock etc) they are recieving money fasted. If you personally filled like I do, well we are just up the creek.

  40. I do not understand why congress decided to have the irs hold off on processing refunds, for EIC & additional child tax credit claimers, until after the 15th. That is not what is going to stop fraud! They need to focus on refunds that have a unusual change in dependents year after year. I have been claiming my same three dependents for years. What are they looking for?

    Reply
    • Fraud…too many people were claiming kids who did not belong to them. The irs or congress cannot make an exception for some but not others. Sorry but not sorry. I had no kids and mine still took 21 days so everyone’s impacted not just people with kids . The news has warned people in December to not expect anything until after the 15th so i do not know why everyone is complaining
