Ohio (OH) Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) – Extra $300 FPUC, PEUC, PUA, and EB – 2021 Unemployment Benefit Extensions News and Updates

This article was last updated on January 19

The unemployment money that Ohioans receive from the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services (OHJFS) comes from something called the Ohio Unemployment Trust Fund. The money in the fund comes from a tax that employers pay the state. At the start of the year, the fund had roughly $1.3 billion in it. State leaders say that money will be gone next month. More than two weeks ago the state asked the federal government for a $3.1 billion loan, to make sure everyone who is approved, gets paid. When it comes time to pay that loan back, the state may need more than $3.1 billion, because Ohio does not meet the federal requirements needed to borrow money without interest.

2021 Unemployment Program Extensions Under COVID Relief Bill

The $900 billion COVID-19 relief package was passed into law on Dec. 27, 2020, which among several other pandemic relief measures extends and provides additional federal funding for enhanced unemployment benefits. This includes the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) and a reinstatement, but halving of the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) Program which provides a $300 supplemental weekly unemployment payment.

These programs have been funded and extended for 11 weeks (on top of any state funded extensions), covering the weeks of December 26th, 2020 to March 14th, 2021. To receive FPUC benefits, you must be receiving regular UI, PEUC, EB, or PUA.

Ohio Unemployment – 2021 Extensions Payment Update

The additional $300 in federal weekly unemployment benefits approved by Congress could be in the hands of Ohio workers by the third week in January. “We’re working as quickly as possible on that,” Kimberly Hall, director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

[Updated January 16th] The ODJFS has provided some updated guidelines for payment of extended enhanced UI programs as follows:

PUA Implementation Update: PUA claims can be filed for weeks prior to December 27. However, due to the transition, new PUA applications and claims for weekly PUA benefits cannot be accepted at this time. ODJFS expects to have the PUA system back up and running by the third week in January for those who previously were approved to receive up to 39 weeks of these benefits, so they can again file weekly claims. System programming will be needed before new claims can be filed. All claimants will receive all benefits they are eligible for. (Target Date: 02/26/2021. New applicants from 02/06/2021)

PEUC Implementation Update: New PEUC applications can be filed, and individuals with remaining weeks to claim out of the original 13 weeks can continue to claim benefits for those weeks and be paid. However, the additional 11 weeks will require system programming. Individuals may file claims for those weeks, but the system cannot yet pay them. Once the programming is complete, individuals will receive all payments they are eligible for. (Target Date: 01/31/21)

$300 FPUC Implementation Update: ODJFS is issuing FPUC payments as of 01/16/201 for those with active PUA, PEUC and Regular UI claims and who can certify. Those who had exhausted benefits won’t receive the $300 until they can file claims following system updates described above. All claimants will eventually receive all benefits they are eligible for.

Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation : Once implemented, will provide an additional $100 a week, on top of the $300 FPUC benefit.

Final guidelines on these programs and final eligibility (including additional document verification procedures to combat Fraud) have been issued by the Department of Labor and have to be implemented by ODJFS. This has historically been an inconsistent process with some states much slower than others at implementing these changes. As a result, experts are predicting 2 to 4 weeks for these extensions and retroactive payments to be paid out.

UI claimants with existing or expired claim balances should be aware of the following:

  • PUA and PEUC, FPUC will be automatically added to the claimants’ benefits if they are eligible for the weeks outlined in the new legislation.
  • Claimants with weeks remaining in UI should continue to file weekly claims
  • Claimants who will have additional weeks in UI and PUA or PEUC due to state provisions (where applicable) should watch their state agency UI portal or website for updates that will allow additional weeks to be filed.
  • Claimants will be retroactively caught up on payments for all weeks they are eligible.
  • Claimants currently receiving benefits through the Extended Benefits program must finish all weeks of EB before receiving additional weeks of PEUC.

I will post additional details as they are released in coming days. So stay tuned for updates.

Over summer Ohio’s unemployment system was overloaded with 90,000 claims unprocessed leaving some people waiting over 8-weeks for their first check. In the months since, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services (ODJFS) which is responsible for managing unemployment claims is working to catch up, hiring new staff. Now, based on the latest data, Ohio has successfully processed 95% of its claims, and averages a 21-day turn around. Claims taking longer are considered complex and ODJFS is still working to get those processed.

Note – For those still waiting for unemployment back payments In Ohio, all unemployment claims are retroactive from the date you became eligible, delays may happen but will not affect the total amount of your benefit, just the date you will receive your first payment(s).

If you are still having issues with your claim status Ohio has extended its call center hours, hold times have decreased, but are still long. The main call center number is 1-877-644-6562 (M-F 7am to 7pm; Sat: 9am to 5pm; Sun: 9am to 1pm)

Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) Program Update

The OHJFS has now paid out the $300 weekly payment under the LWA program, which provides supplemental payments to eligible unemployment benefits claimants who have been unemployed, partially unemployed, or unable or unavailable to work due to disruptions caused by COVID-19. OHJFS had processed the majority of LWA payments, including retroactive funds, to eligible claimants by the end of September (see latest LWA state tracker dates). Eligible claimants will have their LWA weekly benefit payment retroactive to the dates they are eligible, for a maximum of 6 weeks.

LWA payment schedule

The ODJFS recently published an updated schedule for the $300 payment which will be done in batches based on the type of unemployment people were getting.

Update for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Claimants:

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) claimants began receiving retroactive LWA payments the week of September 14, 2020. For PUA claimants, LWA is being distributed in individual $300 payments (less taxes) over a period of six days through September 21, for all weeks they qualify, up to $1,800.

LWA was able to be provided to PUA claimants more quickly because PUA is administered by a newer cloud-based system, which is much less difficult to program than the legacy system used to deliver traditional unemployment benefits.

Update for Traditional UI, Trade, Shared Work Ohio and Extended-Benefit Claimants:

The system programming necessary to issue LWA payments to remaining claimants has now been completed. Claimants under these unemployment programs will need to verify that they are eligible for LWA. This group of claimants started receiving their payments from September 20th.

Eligible claimants will receive one retroactive LWA payment for all weeks that they qualify, up to $1,800. Note that if you chose for your taxes to be withheld from your weekly unemployment payments, taxes also will be withheld from your LWA payments.

The new Lost Wages program however does cut the federal benefit ($600 FPUC) in half for Ohioans since the state cannot afford to boost the benefit by the additional $100 state contribution requested by Trump.

COVID 19 & Enhanced Benefits in Ohio

Under the CARES act, the following federally funded enhanced unemployment assistance was made available.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA): expands eligibility for individuals who are typically ineligible for Unemployment benefits, for example, independent contractors, self-employed, and “gig” workers.

Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC): provides an additional 13 weeks of Unemployment benefits to all recipients. On July 6th, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, announced that an additional 20 weeks of benefits will be available to those individuals who have exhausted their regular unemployment and the 13 weeks of the PEUC

At this time, the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), which provided individuals with an additional $600 per week, has ended (however is being reviewed for an extension to year end). However, if your claim eligibility dates between March 29th and July 25th you will receive this benefit.

In many states, the increase in COVID-19 related unemployment has triggered the Extended Benefits (EB) program providing an additional 20 weeks for those who have exhausted all other state and federal benefits. The activation of Extended Benefits (EB) is due to the high unemployment rates in Ohio. As of July 23rd, the ODJFS had received over 1.5 million claims

The unemployment rate, which topped out at 17.6% in April, went down to 13.9% in May and is predicted to drop to 10.9% in June.

Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC)

The Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) payment benefit of an additional $600 per week expired on July 25, 2020. The FPUC benefit was applied to all unemployment programs. If you are claiming unemployment benefits for the last week (July 19 – 20, 2020), your next payment will be the final payment that will include the $600 FPUC.

We know that many Ohioans have come to rely on these payments during this difficult time. If action is taken on the federal level to either continue this program or institute a replacement, we will inform you and begin adjusting our systems to process any new payment requirements.

Filing a Claim:

Regular Unemployment Insurance (UI)

Individuals need to have worked 20 weeks and averaged $269 or more per week during that period. They must be unemployed through no fault of their own. Unemployment claims are retroactive from the date you became eligible, delays may happen but will not affect the total amount of your benefit you receive. You can apply here.

Here are the things you will need:

  • A valid email address and telephone number, your SSA, DOB, and Driver’s License or State ID number, and your 2019 tax return, if filed.
  • Dates for employment for 2019 -2020, name, address and telephone number of employer(s)
  • Dependent information – spouse or children including their SSA and DOB
  • The reason you became unemployed – remember this has to meet the guideline described above.
  • Routing and Account number of your bank for direct deposit

Regular UI lasts up to 26 weeks.

Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation –

If your unemployment ends, the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) can extend your UI payments for another 13 weeks. This program is limited, running from April to December 2020. It is available only if you have come to the end of your regular unemployment claim or if you have an expired claim and are still out of work – this program will provide an extension. If your unemployment claim is current, you do not need to apply. If your claim has lapsed, you may be able to file.

If your PEUC ended, the Federal-State Extended Benefits (EB) program kicks in to assist you with up to 20 more weeks of benefits. There is no need to apply if your unemployment claim is current.

If you are not eligible for regular unemployment and are out of work due to COVID-19, you should be eligible for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program.

PUA assists unemployed individuals who are not eligible for regular UI benefits. Their unemployment status must be a direct result of COVID-19. PUA benefits are retroactive, even if you became unemployed as far back as February 2, 2020. Processing is behind; however you will receive the full amount of your benefit.

Examples include:

  • This program assists self-employed individuals, independent contractors, freelance and gig workers, and others who can no longer work, through no fault of their own, due to COVID-19.
  • The individual or a member of their household has been diagnosed with COVID-19, or they are responsible for the care of a family member diagnosed with COVID-19, or they are in quarantine due to exposure to COVID-19
  • The individual has become the primary breadwinner due to the death from COVID-19 or is the primary caregiver for a child who is unable to attend school.
  • The individual cannot get to work because of quarantine, laid off, quit a job, or had a business close due to COVID.

Unlike Ohio’s traditional unemployment program, there is no minimum work requirement for PUA.

You can apply for PUA here: pua.unemployment.ohio.gov

Here are the things you will need:

  • A valid email address and telephone number, your SSA, DOB, and Driver’s License or State ID number, and your 2019 tax return, if filed.
  • Dates for employment for 2019 -2020, name, address and telephone number of employer(s)
  • Dependent information – spouse or children including their SSA and DOB
  • The reason you became unemployed – remember this has to meet the guideline described above.
  • Routing and Account number of your bank for direct deposit

Ohio PUA FAQs:

Do I need to apply for traditional unemployment, get denied, and then apply for PUA?

No – if you meet the eligibility requirements for PUA, you can apply.

If your regular unemployment is under appeal and you meet the PUA requirements, you may apply.

Only if you have a suspension, disqualification, or are serving out penalty weeks for tradition unemployment must you wait for that process to conclude before applying for PUA.

  1. I lost my job back in may and initially filed for regular UI June 5th. I waited until August 28th only to be denied because my employer said I left without just cause. I filed my appeal because that was not how it happened. Since filing, my local school district closed leaving my daughters home to do remote learning and me unable to work. I called every week to check oo un my appeal and to see about being able to apply for the PUA program because I kept being told that I had finds available with UI I needed to claim. The funds they were referring to were from a 2013 claim. So for 10 more week I waited, until I FINALLY got someone on the phone who made it so I could access the PUA system. I filed that application on November 15 and again I am still pending. I am 4 months behind on rent, and 4 eviction notices. I was denied rental assistance on Dec 29 from my local Community Action Partnership and have exhausted the other non profit funding in my area. Now my stimulus payment is lost God knows where because when I use the ‘Get my Payment Tool’ i get locked out everytime. No one can help me with that information request either. I have no idea where to turn to get some answers Everyone I talk to gives me differing and clashing information. The last 6 months have been a nightmare, I have worked since I was 14 so this not working or having an income is way new to me and I am just lost. My girls need all new clothes and shoes, school and not to mention Santa didnt make a visit this year either. I am at the end of my rope and I feel like I keep getting forgotten about. I was always told that If i worked hard to provide for myself and my girls that if I were to ever need help then I wouldn’t have a problem finding it, because that is what these programs are for. To help hard working Americans but I feel like I am running around in circles and I am tired.

  2. I filed in November, I honestly am used to my luck not working out so that’s why I didn’t file earlier. I am a low income family live in government housing have 6 year old in school that is doing hybrid learning when school resumes bc of this pandemic, and I have a 3 months old baby girl as well. I’ve been calling and waiting and waiting like everyone else I was told for the longes time I did everything they asked for and now just to wait, but spoke to someone different and they informed me it was an issue with my identity, so I got that fixed and they approved it. So I began waiting again she made it sound like it wouldn’t take long but she said they’re also not allowed to give a time frame either whatever whatever… I’ve been reading so many different things online, not knowing what to believe I’m doubtful I’ll even get it I shouldn’t have waited so long… and here I thought I’d have it before Christmas, now they’re telling me it may be getting held up because I put that I quit my job as a direct result of COVID …. that’s one of the qualifying factors …. I don’t understand .. the lady lady I spoke to told me if the program didn’t get extended then it ends on the 26th I said what about my case and people that have been waiting even longer than I have, will we ever get an answer or we just won’t get it? And she said we still have people waiting from back in June, and I even asked somebody higher up than me and that’s what they said that they won’t be reviewing any more cases after the 26th … and I said well damn I thought it was kinda like a deadline thing like you guys had to get all those people who filed before December 6th an answer before or by the 26th and she said she thought the same thing but that’s not what’s going to happen.

But when I first filed a couple weeks after I had called in a spoke to a girl and I specifically asked her the same thing if the program ends on the 26th will I still be able to get my benefits as long as I qualify and everything that is and she told me yes!! This is what I HATE about call centers bc you speak to so many different people some don’t do they’re jobs right and it causes you trouble, some do and are awesome! Then you got the ones that don’t know their info or what they’re talking about, and the ones that do. But idk who or what to believe I’ve just started getting myself in the mindset I won’t get it …. I’ve been told so many things if they owe you money they HAVE to pay you, I’ve also been thinking they just have to tell us that maybe so the calls will hopefully stop coming in as frequent and they can do what they need to do to get the rest of the people through the system … then I thought maybe they’re just giving certain claimants issues out of nowhere and saying they’re ineligible for whatever reason they can find just so they can deny people and get through the list of overflowing applications … Idk what to do, I have to stay at home for my sons school on the days he has to attend online he’s only 6, not only that my daughter is only 3 months old and I can’t seem to find a daycare that has a spot and will accept any kids right now …. I just want to know what’s going to happen should I give up hope? I need the money just as much as anyone else does, I have a family to take care of too … and it sounds like they’re in no hurry to get the people stimulus checks either…

    1. MY SITUATION WAS NOT AS BAD AS YOURS BUT I GOT LAID OFF IN MID MARCH. I ALWAYS FIGURED UNEMPLOYMENT WERE FOR THOSE THAT REALLY NEED IT AND SINCE I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM BEFOR FINDING A JOB I WAITED AND LIVED OFF OF MY SAVINGS. MY SAVINGS RAN OUT MID AUGUST AND STILL NO JOB SO FINALLY I FILED FOR UNEMPLOYMENT IN MID AUGUST GOT APPROVED AND STARTED GETTING PAID MID SEPTEBER. BUT EVERYONE WAS AT THAT TIME JUST FINISHED GETTING AN EXTRA 600 A WEEK ON THEIR CHECKS. I WAS TOLD I WASNT ELIGIBLE FOR THAT CAUSE I DIDNT FILE UNTIL AFTER THAT BENEFIT WAS OVER ALTHOUGH I WAS UNEMPLOYED. THEN EVERYONE WAS GETTING THE EXTRA 300 A WEEK BUT I NEVER DID.I CALLED AND CALLED LOOKING FOR ANSWERS AS TO WHY NOT AND FINALLY A WOMAN TOLD ME THAT IT LOOKED LIKE I WASNT ELIGIBLE FOR THE EXTRA 300 A WEEK BECAUSE I HAD TO SERVE 3 PENALTY WEEKS FROM 17 YEARS AGO IN 2003 THAT I DONT EVEN REMEBER. THE LADY TOLD ME AFTER I SERVED THOSE 3 WEEKS THAT BENEFIT WOULD BE OVER WHICH WAS WHY SHE SAID I WOULDNT GET IT. NONE OF THIS WAT SETTING RIGHT TO ME SO I CALLED A FEW MORE TIMES TALKED TO DIFFERENT PEOPLEAND ALL HAD DIFFERENT ANSWERS. I TOLD EACH ONE I FELT THESE BENEFITS WERE BEING KEPT FROM ME AND FINALLY A LADY ASKED ME IF I WOULD LIKE TO FILE FOR BACKPAY. I WAS LIKE HUH? SHE SAID IF I FELT SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT SHE COULD PUT MY NAME DOWN TO HAVE MY CASE REALLY LOOKED OUT FOR ERRORS AND POSSIBLE BACKPAY. OK SIGN ME UP PLEASE. SHE WARNED ME THAT BACKPAY WAS REALLY BACKED UP BUT SOMEONE FROM THAT DEPARTMENT WOULD CALL ME IN ABOUT A MONTH. OK I CAN DEAL WITH THAT THANK YOU. THAT WAS LATE SEPTEMBER.END OF THE YEAR KEPT GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER AND SHIT THEY ARE JUST STALLING TILL ENED OF THE YEAR AND POOF BENEFITS WOULD BE GONE. SO WHAT I ENDED UP DOING WASLAST WEEK I WAS ALL OVER LEGAL AID SENDING EMAILS AS FAR AS WHAT CAN I DO.. A DAY AFTER I SENT THE EMAILS A LAWYER EMAILED AND CALLED ME WANTED TO KNOW SPECIFICS AND AFTER I TOLD HIM HE WAS INSISTENT THAT I ALLOW HIM TO LOOK INTO THIS ON A CONTIGENCY BASIS AND SENDS ME A CONTRACT TO SIGN. THAT WAS THIS PAST MONDAY.WELL WE EMAILED BACK AND FORTH TUESDAY ABOUT THIS CONTRACT HE HAD TO HAVE BEFORE HE COULD DO ANYTHING. BUT I USED TUESDAY TO WEIGH MY OPTIONS. WEDNESDAY COMES AROUND AND I WILL BE DAMNED GOT A PHONE CALL FROM UNEMPLOYMENT THEY JUST GOT TO MY CASE WAS I STILL WANTING TO SEE ABOUT BACKPAT. I SAID YES SO WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY WHICH WAS YESTERDAY UNEMPLOYMENT CALLS ME MY ENTIRE FILE THERE WAS F.U.B.A.R SO THE JUST REDONE THE ENTIRE UNEMPLOYMENT CASE FROM THE BEGINNING EXCEPT INSTEAD OF STARTING IT IN SEPTEMBER WHEN I FILED THEY WENT ALL THE WAY BACK TO MID MARCH WHEN I GOT LAYED OFF. THE LADY TOLD ME YESTERDAY THAT SHE JUST HAS A COUPLE MORE THINGS TO RESOLVE BUT I SHOULD EXPECT A LUMP SUM ON MY CARD NO LATER THAN JAN 21ST. SHE IS CALLING ME BACK TODAY LET ME KNOW WHATEVER IT WAS SHE NEEDED TO FIND OUT. BUT SHE WASNT ALLOWED TO TELL ME WHAT IND OF PAYMENT I WOULD BE GETTING BUT I FIGURED SINCE I GAVEUP ON THIS MONTHS AGO AND AND ME GETTING AHOLD OF A UNEMPLOYMENT LAWYER WAS JUST A LAST DITCH EFFORT ON MY PART. SO FIGURED MONTHS AGO I GOT SCREWED AND NOW SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT A LUMP PAYMENT IN 3 WEEKS OR LESS: OK YEA WHATEVERI WILL HOLD MY BREATH. BUT I GUESS I AM GETTING SOMETHING BACK LIKE 21 WEEKS. ADN BELIEVE IT OR NOT MY LAWYER HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THEY DIDNT KNOW ABOUT HIM AND I NEVER SIGNED THE CONTRACT SO HE NEVER STARTED, BUT YES 2 DAYS AFTER TALKING TO HIM WAS WHEN I GOT THE CALL FROM THEM. I THOUGHT SOMEONE WAS PRANK CALLIN ME. GUESS I JUST LUCKED OUT

  3. I filed an appeal on nov 13th because they couldn’t verify my identity. Should I file a new appeal? Or will that slow me down?

    1. To my understanding it was just the backdate covid that they said not to send two emails but everything else I think the more you bug them the better service you get

    2. if you filed an appeal it should be on them to do something, but as far as an identity issue maybe send another copy of whatever it was they have problems with. maybe even blow it up to poster size so they can see it better. lol

  4. I miss read a question marked it wrong clef and they got it corrected now its been 21 weeks and they just keep telling me to be patient that it’ll be on my card any day I need help here b4 me and my kids are on the street.

  5. I have been waiting for my back pay since august. I have sent emails, called the (866) number they have told me just to be patient. I have had to turn in my car, I am behind in all of my bills and I have 3 children and it’s Christmas time. They seem to not care at all and keep saying all they can do is send in another request. I’ve sent in close to 6.
    I’m out of options .

    1. I believe that it was in this vlog that they said to send in an email to the backdatecovid@jfs.ohio.gov, but only to send one email because each email you send after your first one just puts you back at the end of the line and they start all over with your request. That was my understanding of what I read so I wouldn’t recommend sending any more emails. Maybe I misinterpreted it but that is what I remember reading.

    2. THEY ARE SERIOUSLY BACKED UP. I WAITED MONTHS AS WELL AND FIGURED THEY WAS TRYING TO BUY TIME AND LET THE CLOCK RUN OUT. SO I WENT AND SENT A FEW EMAILS TO DIFFERENT LEGAL AIDS AND THE DAY AFTER I SENT THE EMAILS A LAWYER CALLED ME AND ILL BE DAMN THE NEXT 2 DAYS UNEMPLOYMENT CALLED ME WORKING ON MY BACKPAY. AND TODAY SHOULD BE THE LAST CALL TO FINALISE. I DIDNT EVEN NEED THE THE LAWYER AND THEY DIDNT EVEN KNOW I WAS GETTING ONE. THAT PART JUST WORKED OUT. BUT I WAS TOLD YESTERDAY THAT SOMETIME IN THE NEXT 21 DAYS TO SEE ABOUT 21 WEEKS ON MY CARD DEPOSITED. SO THEY ARE TRYING BUT MAYBE A UNEMPLOYMENT LAWYER COULD GET THINGS ROLLING BETTER FOR YOU? ITS ON A CONTIGENCY BASIS SO WHY NOT?

  6. Call p u a unemployment you can do it through Job and family services automated system and talk to them and tell them that you need to backdate as far as you can go back from when you lost your job

  7. i filed for pua back in june took about 3 months for them to get back with me and they told me i had an I.d issue i since then filed a appeal fix my issue its been almost 6 months i have been waiting for my appeal to go through i cant get through to the unemployment pua appeal because the guy that finally answered for me said that they are not taking calls my girlfriend and i live together she has a autoimmune disease she can not fight off covid if she is exposed to it basically its a strong possibillity she would die from it i quit my job to make sure i didnt get sick we are struggling to keep up with our rent bill im almost out of options

  8. You have to file every week…. Its so confusing when no ones not telling you anything

    1. for sure, but they will let you know the second you do something they do think you are entilted to

  9. Hello I have a question I need to file for back pay and don’t know how my card is on it’s way they only paid me from three weeks ago but I don’t know what to fill out for back pay can you help?

  10. I’m so confused right now I filed on October 22 and they would only let me back date to October 11 but I’ve been out of work since May 25th n I even called them n told them this but haven’t heard anything back n I’m also approved so will I get back pay???

    1. I have the same problem, I filed for the PUA on 09/12/2020 and it would only let me back date it till 08/30/2020 when I really became unemployed on 05/27/2020. I’ve called in many times and was told each time that I had to email the PUA technical department and was given the email, I emailed them with the info they told me to put in it and have yet to hear anything back from them or have it changed. I sent that email a little over two months ago, so I emailed our state senator of my district and they emailed me back saying that they were really busy but that they sent an email to then explaining the situation and that it needed to be fixed and still have not heard anything at all. I emailed the senator about a month ns half ago. I got a email last night stating that the PUA would end on 12/12/2020 and that kinda made me worry a little because lately when I call in and explain everything to them they keep telling me since it has been that long since I emailed that that I should be getting it fixed around mid December, but all I can think of that is going to happen when that date comes is PUA will end and I’ll never hear anything again about changing the effective date and getting the back pay I’m owed. So once again I sent another email to the technical department and I messaged two of ohio’s state senator’s in hope that something will happen before 12/12 but I doubt anything will change giving that it’s already 12/05. I’ve read so many post from different people on reddit saying that they are all having the same problem and no one is fixing anything for them and that they are all just being told to email the tech department, people have been making post about this kind of situation for months now. I’m happy to see in not the only one and it gives me a little hope that emailing the technical department might be the right way to get it fixed and that they might just be that backed up, at least I like to think that right now.

      1. I’m in the same situation I’ve been waiting an waiting on this backdate pay and like you I’ve sent 3 emails started on Aug 21st to there tech services and like you I’ve called several times to try an get help an get the backdated pay owed to me only for them to tell me that they are backed up and to please be patient that I will receive my backdate pay! Now we’re 3 weeks away from Christmas and also there ending these benefits on the 26 th unless the government does another bill which is looking like it’s not going to happen and like you I feel like I’m getting the run around and probably be screwed over out of the money I and so many others like me are entitled to receiving it’s very stressful that I am getting the run around from these people and everyone I talk to is just passing me off to the next person and none of them are giving me any help at all it’s not right and it needs to be fixed !

      2. I’m having similar issues here. What is the actual email for the technical department.
About to have the worst Christmas with my kids.

      3. LOOK INTO LEGAL AID THAT WAS WHAT I DID ALTHOUGH IN MY CASE I SERIOUSLY LUCKED OUT BUT I EMAILED LEGAL AID WHICH IS NO CHARGE UNLESS YOU WIN BUT THE DAY AFTER I GOT AHOLD OF LEGAL AID A LAWYER CALLED ME AND EMAILED ME AND THE NEXT 2 DAYS AFTER THAT UNEMPLOYMENT HAS CALLED ME RESOLVING MY ISSUE AND JUST LUCK BUT THE LAWYER DIDNT EVEN DO ANYTHING. BUT SERIOUSLY EVERYONE THEY REALLY ARE TRYING BUT ALSO VERY BACKED UP. IF YOU ARE AT YOUR WITS END LIKE I WAS LOOKING INTO LEGAL AID IS A VIABLE OPTION FOR ALL. THEY CAN GET THEIR FOOT IN THE DOOR BEFORE YOU CAN EVEN GET ONTO THE PARKING LOT. SO JUST A THOUGHT FOR EVERYONE.

  11. im still waiting also buddy! emailed them like they said and still nothing and its suppose to be one to two weeks after deemed eligible!!

  12. how long does pua or ohio think one can survive bumming from everyone every card maxed loans denied family services no snaps unemployeed since 02-2020 didn’t know bout pua till 06-07 filed got approved ajudacated 07-2020 today is 10-25-2020 still pending emails unanswered and every week operator claims there on a new system and escaulates it to get looked at. but everything stays the same pending with no communications ever from pua except letter of ajudacation verification to which the told me back in july hurry your past ajudacated just verifing you …..damn getting desperate here it’s cold outside

    1. LEGAL AID PEOPLE. THEY GET NOTHING UNLESS YOU WHEN. THINK ABOUT IT. A LAWYER CAN BEND THE COURTS EAR BEFOR A PLAINTIFF CAN SO THAT WAS WHAT I ENDED UP DOING

  13. Been thinking long and hard about this pua! I have been patient I’ve been very understanding I’ve been sitting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting!
I started this process on 4-19-20, I didn’t get in the PUA system until July 13 2020. Now after fighting the fraud, I got a deposit 8-5-2020, and was told this could have been a error or a mistake! So many people got there money but was still having a pending issue. Now I’m so scared to touch the money because people are getting hit with this letter of paying it back!
I also was told i never should of got my back pay if my PUA wasn’t approved yet!
Now i sitting on this money don’t know what to do because adjudication people will not look into pua!

I’ve been telling them, how long do I have to wait. I started this in April and it’s October! I’m still pending!
About to give up and just use that money they gave me in August! When your trying to do the right thing and still can’t get nothing, no help but the moment i use it thats when there coming at with that letter!!!
Maybe it’s time to walk away from PUA. This has been the worst blunder in American history!‍♂️‍♂️‍♂️‍♂️‍♂️

  15. I was put out of work on 04/15/2020 I was approved for pua unemployment ohio on 06/07/2020 and have been receiving correspondence filling them out every week and getting paid every week but it says that payments are retroactive from the time you lost your job which was 04/15/2020 why have i not received any of that money from the date i was put out of work to the date i was approved for pua unemployment ohio when it says i am supposed too? Is anyone else having this problem? I mean it’s been 4 months and I haven’t heard anything I’ve called and called customer service I’ve sent emails idk what else to do and calling and sending emails clearly is not working so if someone could please help me with this issue it would be greatly appreciated thank you for your time

    1. Michael I’m in tbe same boat. I called snd got thru to speak to someone who told me to email which i did every week since beginning of August. Not a word..no corespondence nothing..im at a loss.

      1. Yeah this is crazy I’ve called and called emailed and emailed idk what to do I’ve already lost almost everything that money would help me so much it would get my life back 8n order

        1. FILE EVERY WEEK NO MATTER WHAT. THEY ARE JUST VERY BACKED UP GUYS THEY FINALLY GOY BACK WITH ME THESE LAST 2 DAYS AND AFTER I HAVE GIVEN UP. I WAS LAID OFF MID MARCH BUT NEVER FILED UNTIL MID SEPT. SO I JUST CONSIDERED THOSE MONTHS GONE. WELL THESE LAST 2 DAYS OVER THE PHONE THEY STARTED MY CLAIM AGAIN FROM THE BEGINNING BECAUSE THEY SAID MY FILE WAS A MESS. BUT INSTEAD OF SEPTEMBER WHEN I FILED THEY WENT ALL THE WAY BACK TO MID MARCH SO WAS TOLD YESTERDAY TO BE LOOKING ON MY CARD FOR AROUND 21 EXTRA WEEKS WITHEN THE NEXT 21 DAYS. SO PATIENCE PEOPLE THEY ARE TRYING. AND LAST THOUGHT TO CONSIDER. TALKING TO LEGAL AID IS FREE AND STAYS FREE UNLESS THEY WIN.

    2. I’ve done the same thing but what I don’t know is do we have to file for each week to get all those back payments or is it just automatic and they’re going to send it one of these years? Lol

    3. Yes my date is February 15, i filed may 14, but got pay back to may 10! Pua staff and i have sent emails since September, with not even a acknowledgement, and some of the call center staff are down right rude and unprofessional.

  16. I certified for lwa and I’m on regular UI. I haven’t seen these funds yet. Hopefully soon. They should have been paid out already but the office stated they were having issues. Also for those that are saying weekly/biweekly. Your only biweekly if you don’t file online

    Good luck everyone

    1. I’m on regular ui and I got mine last wed (Sep 30th) night. Hopefully you would get yours soon.

      1. Hello I have a question I need to file for back pay and don’t know how my card is on it’s way they only paid me from three weeks ago but I don’t know what to fill out for back pay can you help?

  17. Just spoke to Unemployment they said the glitch is fixed & we should start getting our deposits by Thursday evening or the weekend. They are sending it out in batches.

    1. are you talking about back pay or your regular unemployment out of curiosity thanks in advance

  18. I’m in Columbus Ohio and on regular unemployment. I always file Saturday night a little past midnight and I always receive my payment on Monday at 4:44. I answered the LWA question and got two notices in my correspondence inbox about one about my regular unemployment payment and the second about the $1,800. They are both dated September 21st but I haven’t received either yet? Is anyone else experiencing this? I was thinking about calling them to be sure everything was okay, but everything looks right on my account I just haven’t received anything yet. Thanks in advance

    1. They had some issues with sending some payments. I think fixed it now and they just have to redistribute the funds as banks were denying the original payment. It’s a waiting game now. I’ve called them 3 days in a row and was pointless.

  19. Cincinnati Ohio here, I received my LWA $1800.00 yesterday….. I self certified Saturday morning. I am on regular UI

    1. Awesome. Thanks for sharing and giving hope to many others waiting for their payment

    2. I called this morning and they said there was a glitch in the system where some payments were affected. Mine is one and still waiting.

      1. My bank declined my UI pmt and then right after that my LWA put. Contacted them and said they got calls all day for declining pmt’s because the state has issued checks under the wrong names. Cant get through to ODJFS bc it says to go online, high call volume and no way to wait for a rep and then hangs up on you.. has anyone heard anything regarding this? No news on the login page for my ODJFS notifications, just says paid and cant talk to any live person.

        1. Same for me. If you call when they first open at 7 you will get through and put on hold. This morning I waited about half an hour. The rep told me some went out as a John doe that’s why we never got it. I’m calling in the morning to see if they fixed it because I need it. Car note is due friday

        2. Thank you! I soooooo much appreciate the response. Please respond back (whenever, tomorrow after you talk to them) just curious if I need to do something or let them know I was one of their “John Doe’s” or if they are just fixing it and reissuing them. Thank you again, I have rent due coming up and this could hurt. Thank you again

  20. Hey there guys I’ve been commenting on here a lot lately but I just wanted to give you guys an update I am in Columbus Ohio and I file my claims every Sunday I am on regular UI and I normally get it on Monday by 5:00 p.m. so I just went on and I filed my claim for the lwa payment Friday morning I believe or it might have been Saturday morning whenever the morning was that they released the system was complete is when I filed my claim but anyway the point is I just now went on it is 15 minutes till midnight here I just went on and it says paid back next to every eligible week I am eligible which was all of them so that means I’m getting it tomorrow with my regular payment I hope this helps everybody this payment was once needed for all of us I know it was for me good luck to you guys.

    1. Did you get your LWA..I got my regular payment at 2o’clock..it all like yours says payment date 9/21/20

      1. I usually get my UI about 4 45. It says paid today right with LWA but I still haven’t recieved either and it’s after 5.

        1. I received my regular unemployment at 330 which is early but no LWA yet…Which I was approved for and was dated for today along side my UI….Anyone recieve LWA yet?

        2. I still haven’t received either of them. My LWA or my regular UI. Not sure why it hasn’t come through yet but both say paid today

  21. I just logged into my unemployment. On the main benefit page…you can now “certify” ..this is for reg. Unemployment compensation/ extended unemployment compensation ONLY!!!

  22. So according to the Ohio department of job and family service.. Update for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Claimants:
Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) claimants began receiving retroactive LWA payments the week of September 16, 2020. For PUA claimants, LWA is being distributed in individual $300 payments (less taxes) over a period of six days through September 21, for all weeks they qualify, up to $1,800.
Update for Traditional Unemployment, Trade, SharedWorkOhio and Extended-Benefit Claimants:
We are diligently working to implement the system programming necessary to issue LWA payments. We expect this work to be complete in mid- to late September. When it is complete, we will post instructions here stating the steps you must take to certify that you are eligible for LWA benefits.
LWA was able to be provided to PUA claimants more quickly because PUA is administered by a newer cloud-based system, which is much less difficult to program than the legacy system used to deliver traditional unemployment benefits.
Eligible claimants will receive one retroactive LWA payment for all weeks that they qualify, up to $1,800. Note that if you chose for your taxes to be withheld from your weekly unemployment payments, taxes also will be withheld from your LWA payments.
Please continue to check this web page for updates.
Last Updated: September 17, 2020 hope this helps

    1. What do you do if you answered the certification question wrong for LWA?

      1. You need to call a state UI agency rep and ask them to updates system from their end

  23. I got two payments of $270.00 which I didn’t expect at all. Obviously I’m not complaining as I am still out of work. One was dated Wednesday, Sep. 16, 2020 and the other was dated today, Thursday, Sep. 17, 2020.

      1. Yes; so I get around $170.00 regular and since I had some odd jobs I went a few weeks without getting the $170.00. But this week out of the blue I got *both* these payments. Like I said, not complaining, but TOTALLY surprised.

        1. Since your on reg unemployment did they send you anything about certifying before you received them? Sorry just want to know what to expect.

        2. Well the whole story with PUA for me was that I didn’t start getting PUA until I called someone at my Congressman’s office. I got in touch with someone in US Rep Anthony Gonzalez’s office and they set me up with the $600.00/week.

  24. I am on pua and have not seen any emails or payment history updates for weeks files aug 1 through sept 5 for 300 lwa so i am confused as to why i have no notice or payment updates for it and i been on pua since then

  25. Im in ohio on pua. In the payments tab on the PUA website I have new payments on 9/15, 9/16, 9/17 each for 300$.

The first $300 or 270$ after taxes was deposited and cleared in my bank account today 9/17. As it usually takes 2 days from the paid status in the website to actually clear my bank account I’m assuming that tomorrow and the day after i will see the next payments. Will update as it occurs.
Still nothing about my back pay or reply to my emails. I did have a missed call this morning from a 812 area code no voicemail so maybe?

  26. Has anyone actually recieved their back pay after emailing pua-technical-services@jfs.ohio.gov yet? When you call they tell you to email but it seems no one is getting responses and I’ve seen nothing stating it actually happens?

(I was unemployed march 15 but didn’t start receiving pua until beginning of July. )

      1. When I finally got through to talk to someone on the phone at the PUA call service center they gave me the email address pua-technical-services@jfs.ohio.gov and said to email them with an explanation of the claim, claim id, social security and name. I’m guessing because on the website account my claim start date needs to be changed.

        1. Have they gotten back with you? How long did it take?

    1. I received my back pay in two days after emailing this email address right here I use seven different emails to contact them and this is the one that answered back within 2 days and updated my status the very same night when they updated the system and I was able to file all my back weeks UCTECH@jfs.OH.gov

      1. so i emailed that same address and im hoping they get back to me like they did you?

      2. Could you please provide that link to email about the back date possibly one more time because I tried to email that link and they said that there was no server found at that address I’m also trying to file for back pay in Ohio thank you

      3. 11/16/20
Hi James, I’m happy to hear you recieved your backpayments. Were you filling with regular UI or PUA? Could I ask what other email address you sent your messages to and did you include any other pertinent information in your email? I’ve tried calling and emailing but nothing so far and it’s been months. Thanks in advance!

  27. I recieve regular EUC (extended unemployment compensation)(its over the $100 threshold)do I have to certify to receive the LWA (dated back to Aug 1st) I don’t see anything in my correspondence box. And can’t find anything on the website

  28. I called them they said they still need to update the UI system and is also what I receive said it could be by the end of September bummed me out actually.

    1. They system is ready now …I filed my lwa claim yesterday morning.and yes im in ohio and on reg ui

  29. I have been getting regular unemployment until this week and just filed for pua and I still do not have anything showing for the 300, any answers? And do you have to self certify for the lwa?

  30. I revived a payment today msrk backed too 8/1 then got got another one back 8/8 days I’ll revive it on the 17th but that’s it do far

  31. If you are on pua, check on payment history it has a new entry . mine is showing that the payment for the 300 is on the 16th. really its 270 if you have it setup to take taxes out already

    1. Mine too, but twice ivr called about my original bsckpay, which ivr not even received recognition to my email, but i inquired about the $300, just today, and was told that ohio has not been approved from the federal level yet, and funds have not been released, and i asked bout the extra entry, and she denied it altogether, even told her i screenshotted it. She refused to acknowledge it being there. I WAS LOOKING AT THE PAGE WHILE ON THE PHONE WITH HER, look again, mine shows a 2nd entry today, both say they have been paid, but ive not received anything more than my regular payment

  32. I really want to know just where are any of you getting your information on these dates 9/21/20 and of course it’s all retroactive from 8/1/20 so that’s 4wks for august and the first two weeks in September that’s where the $1800 comes in too play.

  33. Has anyone in ohio been sent anything about self certification for the lwa 300 payments yet? Or have they not done it yet? I only receive reg ui benefits but having a hard time finding work in my area due to covid and im worried that didnt send me anything because i dont qualify. I meet the $100 requirement just not sure about the rest. Any info would be appreciated thanks.

    1. I’m in ohio and have not received anything. The one page said paid 2 weeks and this one says Sept. 31st. I might end of calling them.

    2. I am gettin regular EUC (extended unemployment compensation) do I HAVE to certify to receive the LWA (dated back to Aug 1st) I can’t find anything on the website about it.

      1. Im not sure yet cant get info about anything. If i do ill reply to this one please do the same

        1. I called odjfs said if your on unemployment or the extended unemployment.you DO NOT have to certify..and as long as you were on unemployment in aug.you will get your LWA. Hope this helps

        2. Yes thank you. I just dont understand why only pua people are the only ones receiving info and not anybody on reg ui. Since i know your in ohio and getting regular ui can i ask if you had to refile for the extra weeks when your ui ran out or did they automatically enroll you? If not did they at least email you? I only have 1 week left of reg ui benefits.

        3. Yes, I had to file for the EUC..when my balance went to zero.its on the to of the main webpage ..think it says information about federal FEDERAL extended benefits. And about the LWA.the rep.at odjfs said the they are releasing it WED. THURS. & FRI(hints the “batch” payment..the rest will be posted th 21st.

    3. If you’re getting reg. UI….the state will notify you via their website so you can certify that you’re unemployed partially due to C19 and then you should get one big check…..this will be sometime the end of September, hopefully.

  34. I get PUA now. Do I have to do anything for the 300 LWA. And should it be on the PUA unemployment site.

  35. Is anyone else in the portal and your normal pay out is there marked paid?? I’m guessing it’s coming next week cause I remember when the 600 started there were 2 pay stubs available and I only have one still.

    1. Ohio paid one week of the Lwa. Look under payment history and go down to 8/1. There are two entries for 8/1 now. Only one week retro so far.

      1. Its showing paid, for 14th and 16th, but it has not been paid. Im getting PUA, look at my reply above

      2. Thanks for the info, I don’t see anything yet but I also was not a pua recipient maybe they are paying those out first

        1. Hi Tony P a few of my relatives pua recipients as well and they are getting the payments already so i thing the ones like myself who received state unemployment are getting ours on the 21

  36. I have applied for Pua, on 6-27-20 did receive payments for 6-14- 20 but have tried backdating my claim to March 15th can’t get any answers I tried the emails, calls could it be the 2 pending issues still showing even tho it says fact finding complete? Took 9 weeks to get the first payment I’m so lost? Help!

    1. Same boat kinda, ive been getting regular payments, but my eligibility date is feb 15, but only bern paid since may 10th, and a month ago finally reached by phone, now two reps have sent email, and i have, and thry are just flat refusing to respond.

    1. Yes.Was just some simple questions…but it does say to allow 4 weeks for determation of reinstatement…and if haven’t heard anything after 4 weeks, then you should contact unemployment.Sounds kinda ominous,if you ask me!!!

      1. Im sorry i should of worded what i meant better. I meant have they sent out the self certification for the lwa extra 300 yet? And thank you for responding

      2. Are you talking about the lwa extra $300 benfits? I just receive regular ui and never had to certify for anything. Im trying to see if ohio has sent anything out to certify for the 300 i havent received any emails about and starting to get worried i should qualify.

        1. Is there a certification form we have to fill out to get the 300? Did you get any answers regarding this?

        2. I just talked to someone on unemployment. She said they started processing on Monday and for whatever reason it takes 3 daysfor the process. She said people will start receiving money tomorrow depending on your bank. And there is no certification needed as long as you recieved unemployment between Aug 1st and September 5the you will get it.

    2. I just now did it was one question… Are you unemployed or partially because of Covid 19? I clicked yes then submit…it was under the pymt portal where it says claim details there’s the three parts now, view claim, View overpymt & to (self certify in red). It’s on ohio’s reg ui then u log in…idk how long it will take to get it but will let u know

      1. I just went and looked at at payment history all 6 weeks have the fac next to them now i cant view them yet but its always like that until earlier monday morning.

        1. No i mean now it says fac next to the weeks i already been paid and only added to the 6 weeks owed for the 300. The fac stopped being on there when the 600 stopped back at the end of july. It didnt say fac for 8/1/20 or the other 5 weeks past it until after i self certified last night. Now it does so idk just have to wait until monday when banks are open to see.

    3. Yes! I’m in Columbus Ohio I’m on regular unemployment and I just filed my claim yesterday login on the unemployment website as if you would when you file your weekly claim or bi-weekly claim whichever you are there will be a red message at the top that tells you what to do and you will go down to your claim history and there should be a new tab there that’s where you answer the question that asks if you are unemployed or partially unemployed before or on August 1st or something like that but yep I filed mine yesterday morning no pending payment or anything yet though I always file on Sunday and get it Monday for some reason it’s been like that for months now but if I hear anything I’ll let you guys know. But yes the claim is available now for lwa payment for regular unemployment.!!!!!!

  37. I am a self employed worker, and i have been receiving the pua, but my unemployment date is February 15, but pua is dated May 10, may 14 is my file date, and after all this time, i was able to reach pua by phone, now 3 weeks later, i have emailed, and staff have emailed about my original back date for payment, and from what i was told the emails remain unopened. Im going to soon be living in my car, and nobody is willing to tell me anything further.

  38. Ohio is scheduled to get $300 payments starting today when will it be updated so we know if we get it this week or not ? Thank you .

    1. Your online portal will be have the most accurate date. At this stage this date is just an estimate

      1. I’m in Ohio, my daughter gets PUA she receives hers every Tuesday Morning. It updates between 8-10 Sunday night. As of 10:23pm the $300 is not showing, so it may be another week for her if it only pays out 1 time a week. Just and update.

        1. Thanks CH. Pushed Ohio out a week to Sep 21st (week of) in LWA state tracker as no recent updates on payment date and likely now to happen towards the end of the month. Hopefully its done as one retroactive payment.

        2. They said Sept 21st 2020 is the release date for ohio eligible claimants altho they say alot due to situations i been monitoring release date as of now sept 21st

        3. On PUA, and received first $300 payment today. In my payment history there is another $300 payment dated for today which I should receive tomorrow. The $300 payments I’ve seen so far are showing under August 1st, and August 8th. Hopefully this helps, I have no idea if they intend on paying daily until caught up or not.

      2. Andy,

Do you know why only people on pua are seeing deposits? Have you seen or talked to anyone in ohio receiving regular unemployment that has self certified for the lwa $300? Im really lost and dont know if i should try calling to see why i havent received anything about certifying yet.

    2. Have you found any information out about the extra 300? I receive regular unemployment and havent seen anything update on my account.

    3. I’m on regular unemployment and my mom is on pua both are now starting to get their payments I filed my regular UI lwa claim yesterday morning my mom started getting her lwa for pua a couple days ago they’re doing $300 a day for 6 days for anybody on pua hope that helps… And regular UI are getting one lump sum the only reason puas getting theirs first is because the system that they use is simpler that’s all…
