Retroactive $600 Unemployment (FPUC) Back Pay Benefits and Payment Delays

Most states have now updated their unemployment systems to account for the extra $600 Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) payment to those eligible for regular unemployment insurance (UI). While the roll-out and payment of these benefits has been plagued by challenges with some states struggling a lot more than others, millions of Americans have started receiving their extra/stimulus unemployment benefits. As a reminder, the additional $600 weekly should occur automatically (unless specified by state unemployment site) for anybody eligible for any amount of state unemployment benefits — even as little as $1. The payments, including retroactive or backdated payments for eligible weeks, will continue through July 31 (unless the program is extended under the next stimulus bill).

The good news is that even though payments have started later the planned, they will be retroactive to when states signed up to receive the federal boost for their unemployment programs. This is generally for the week ending 4/3 in most states. So if you were eligible to receive unemployment compensation from that week then you would be eligible to receive payments from that date. The table below shows when states started making the $600 FPUC payment and when the payments were retroactive to.

Unfortunately many readers have noted issues with these retroactive payments whereby they have not received them at all, even though they had gotten their first $600 payment per state schedules. So while many were expecting a large first payment worth thousands, they ended up getting just their base $600 payment. And when they contact their local state unemployment agencies they cannot get a clear answer and are told just to wait while they clear back logs of new claimants. See more reasons why your $600 payment stopped or was delayed.

Given the delays in getting paid your unemployment checks, many jobless workers may be worried that they could be missing out on payments for the extra weeks they were unemployed. The good is that individuals still waiting on a decision regarding their unemployment eligibility will receive all back weeks of FPUC due to them, even if that decision is made after the end of the current FPUC program in July. They may need to go back and certify for weeks they were eligible (which will vary by state), but they will eventually be made whole for unemployment payments they qualify for.

Backdated Payments with PUA claims

Several readers have asked if the $600 payment will be back dated for those who become eligible for state unemployment benefits under the PUA program. While this is subject to the different timelines of the PUA and FPUC programs, generally speaking if you qualified for the PUA program between early April and the end of July, you would be eligible for FPUC benefits per the dates shown below. This includes backdated payments for weeks you were eligible. In most states backdated PUA and FPUC payments will be paid in one lump-sum one to two weeks after you receive your first payment of eligible state UI benefits.

States like Florida, North Dakota and Ohio have confirmed they are still well behind making these retroactive payments due to IT system issues around certifying eligibility for past weeks and taking initial claims for new worker groups (e.g freelancers) eligible for unemployment and the extra $600 under PUA provisions.

Note however that while the program end date is July 31st, retroactive payments for the $600 FPUC may be made after that date subject to program funding. There is also a chance the entire program could be extended if unemployment rates don’t improve.

  1. Anyone here from CA. During the weeks of May 9-20. The certify page was down. Could not certify. Anyone else have this problem? How did you resolve. I’m about ready to write a letter.

  2. I live in Kansas. I filed for PUA July 14. I received my first payment July 23 and second on July 30, both included the additional $600. I did my application with a representative over the phone and was told I was eligible starting April 7, 2020. They had me files claims starting that week. Does anyone know when I will receive my retroactive Payments?

  3. PA here. I received my backpay from regular UC last week on 7/29, back dated all the way to April to end of May. But I didn’t receive any of the $600 payments. Does anyone know if they are paying them out retroactively? Especially since they’ve apparently stopped paying the $600 as of July 25…

  4. I am in az i am going through the same its exhausting for sure it wont wven give me an option to file ive been out of work since march 25 and i only got for the weeks ive filed since been approved. I cant seem to get any info online nor get someone on the phone!

  5. I was determined eligible 7/17/2020 for pua and I’m waiting on way2go debit card. How long will that take? I was sent out weekly payments on the card but have not yet received the card in the mail. Also, I don’t have any $600 either. Will I even get the $600 at all?

    1. You can call ReliaCard and have your card expedited. It will come ups in 2 days. We file around the same time. My issue is I can’t file claims for my back pay. I’m so confused on the process. I put my last date employed on my initial application (3/16) but wasn’t allowed to file back to thats date. We’re you able to??

      1. No, I was unable to file back pay as well. And thanks so much for the info! Btw, I woke up and checked the website and they gave me my extra $600, they sent it as a check. But I still don’t have the card so I’m going to call. Thank you again!

    2. In Va i just got aprroved for pua but it only back dated one week so do that mean i wont get the rest of the back weeks ? i been out of work since apil 12 but only week popped up was for july 25 nothing else can somebosy let me know wat this mean.

  6. In VA, how do I certify for back weeks, unemployed since 4/4/20 but didn’t file until 5/28/20, received payments since but nothing from 4/4 to5/28, when I first filled out my form put I was unemployed since 4/4, can anyone help me found out how to get my retroactive pay? Please.

  8. Hi, I was informed that I should be getting my backdated payments in one lump but never received it, or I don’t know how I can do it on TWC. Will it be applied automatically or do I need to send information/documents? I tried calling the Texas number but no luck at all.

  9. why does the week of july 12, 2020 – july 18, 2020 state that weekly certification is pending but it also states it was paid out on july 19, 2020 but I didn’t get paid so when or why is this happening

  10. I just received 5 weeks of unemployment and 1 payment of $ 600.00. Shouldn’t I receive a total of 5 payments of the $ 600.00? If so, when should I expect the 4 weeks retro payments I am missing? Thank you

    1. Same. I received 5 payments of UC but no $600 payments. I assumed they would come together… I’m in PA btw. I sent an email hoping to figure something out. Also it says on Pa’s website that the $600 should be retropaid regardless if it’s after July 25. I think all these unemployment systems are so backed up it’s hard for them to keep up

  11. Va ( I filed for my weekly certification like I normally do , for the week ending July 19 but I haven’t received payment and when call the weekly claim and check my benefits status it says details not available call 866 blah blah blah they hung up in my ear even when I did call

  12. How can I find out if I’m getting the back pay and how much or how long to get it .

  13. This was very helpful,. though i do have some questions. i mad a claim and received some back pay, it is currently July 23rd 2020, and the entire month of June is still missing from my multi week certification for back pay. is this normal? im missing a total of about 5 weeks….i was covered for april-may but nothing for june. and 1st week of july.

  15. I live in Wisconsin, have been claiming unemployment since the week ending 5/23 I found out I was eligible for regular unemployment about 2 days later but haven’t gotten benefits. it’s now July 16th i have 8 or 9 claims and my unemployment pays 357 per week supposedly, so will i get 357+600 PU for every claim backpayed?

    1. According to the DWD, an individual still waiting on a decision regarding their unemployment eligibility will receive all back weeks of FPUC due to them, even if that decision is made after July 25, 2020. So if you are eligible and have certified for all weeks (including ones you are claiming back pay for) you should be made whole at some point.

  16. I filed for unemployment insurance on March 16,and have only received $315…was approved for Pandemic Asst. on April 14…have received $0 payments…it’s been 4 months as of 7/15/20…HELP US!!

  17. I was eligible to start the PUA 2 to 2020 I’ll begin the payments in June it says that I can get the backpay from the time it started how do I file for the backpay

      1. Which state? States differ on back pay processing. Some are automatic for eligible weeks others need you to go back in and certify for each and every week.

        1. A family is owed 6 weeks of back unemployment.
He tried to certify online. Website kept saying the page not found. Had to recertify. Did that. Now the page is there. But the dates were for the next month.
How does he get the 6 weeks he’s still owed?

    1. You need to speaker in contact with Pua customer service line n do a back claim from the time you wasn’t working if you don’t do that they will take it as if you was working

      1. I’m in Ca.
        It’s regular unemployment.
We sent an email. No response.
You’re saving we need to try and get in touch with CS to do a back claim.
That’s almost impossible. But I suppose we can try.

  18. I just received my Florida Unemplyment on a debit card. I am a 1099 worker and qualified due to the COVID-Relief. My Claim is over 10 weeks old and my card is only loaded with state-payments, I have received absolutely zero-dollars of the extra/$600… What is going on? Does this take awhile to appear in my account? Where is my money America?

    1. The $600 should post to your bank account or debit card 2 days after regular unemployment

    2. Some time you have to file separately depending on state/ now here in nyc I had to call bothe places to fill a back claim n current claim- if eligible

  19. In VA, laid off on April 1, didn’t file for unemployment ( my husband was still working ) Filed on June 1, have received benefits including $600 a week since , but was curious, I put my date of unemployment as 4/1, should I expect benefits retroactive to April or just to the day I filed a claim? I’m getting many different answers. Some say it’s the day you filed others say it’s the day you became unemployed, please help!

    1. I am trying to get the same answer. I received New Jersey unemployment funds retroactive from the date I filed but not retroactive to the date I was out of work.

      1. I was eligible 2/02/2020 didnt began till june so i shold get alll tht $ back but i cant figur out how to file it its fucking dumd af.

      2. You probably didn’t back file res quest the form to do so online of thought could contact Pua

    2. I did recieve a letter of eligibility for back pay on 7/7, but I’ve been constantly calling PUA service line to find out when will I recieve the payment, but only to get getting being hung up on with option 2 or have tried choosing option one but they said I’m up to date. I’ve called the Falls Chruch, VA office, they told me this is the first time they saw this and just to keep an eye on my bank account for direct deposit. I’ve been paid so far 4 weeks since the PEUC started in July. It seems like we need certification on the past weeks in order to get paid out. I have only seen CA have an actual website for this. Only state that I’ve seen have one
