Where is my Stimulus Check Money and Payment Errors

Following on from the details, below here are some more resolutions to common errors in the IRS tool when trying to find the status of your stimulus check payment

Roughly three-quarters of people who are eligible for a $1,200 stimulus payment from the federal government have received it, according to the Treasury Department.

Payment Status = “Need more information.” This means you’re eligible for a payment, but the IRS doesn’t have your banking info. Use the IRS Get My Payment or Non-filer tool to add it.

Why am I getting payment status not available? For those constantly checking their stimulus payment status (and since only updated once a day, this won’t be much of a help) this message means the IRS has likely not gotten around to processing your stimulus check payment based on your recent return or the IRS systems are overloaded since this is the default message! Sit tight and check once a day. Those with the lowest incomes are getting paid first.

Note – The IRS has already announced it will make additional rounds of payment via direct deposit and paper checks each week. The first round went to people the IRS already had direct deposit information on file for, from their 2018 or 2019 tax returns. The next round will be sent to those who recently provided the IRS with their direct deposit information.

Most of the recent comments I am getting on my popular 2020 Stimulus Check (Economic Impact) payment article are essentially readers complaining, stressed and/or totally confused about why they didn’t get the stimulus payment they were expecting, or worse they didn’t get a stimulus check at all! This includes questions and comments on the $500 dependent child stimulus. You can see screenshots from the IRS stimulus tracker tool below that have spurned some of the questions around the missing stimulus check payments. You’ve probably seen the same unhelpful messages when you go to the IRS site and try and get the status of your stimulus check. To be fair, the IRS website is getting a lot of traffic and at this stage they are focused on paying versus resolving or discussing the stimulus check payments. But hopefully here are some answers around your 2020 stimulus check payments that I hope can help.

Why didn’t I get a stimulus check? Assuming you met the eligibility criteria and income requirements to get the stimulus check, the reason you haven’t gotten it by direct deposit yet is that the IRS does not have your bank details or you have an old bank account details in your latest IRS tax filing. Remember that the IRS has to have your direct deposit details, which for most Americans is normally only provided if you received a 2018 or 2019 refund when you filed your taxes. If you filed a return and cannot use the IRS portal for non-filers to add direct deposit details, then your payment will come via check which could take several weeks. At this stage checks will likely start arriving at your IRS registered address from the end of April.

Why was my stimulus payment incorrect? If you got a check but the payment was not correct, make sure you review that you met all the credit to get the full credit as it does phase out about minimum income levels shown below. Also ensure you are looking at your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) on your last 1040 tax filing. If none of these help then you will have to wait for your Stimulus Payment Letter (see below).

Why didn’t I receive the $500 stimulus payment for my dependents? Other than making sure your income was below the eligible levels, remember the following key criteria to get this credit. It is quite strict and may disqualify a number of people with dependents.

  • They must be related to you (blood, marriage, or adoption)
  • They must either be under the age of 17 at the end of 2019
  • You must claim them as a dependent on your latest (2018 or 2019) tax return
  • They cannot provide more than half of their financial support during the tax year and must have lived with you for at least half of the year
  • They must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national or a U.S. resident alien

But I am 100% eligible for the stimulus payments and I have filed a return. For many recipients the reason they haven’t yet got a stimulus check is due to the fact the IRS systems processing these payments is truly not working. One common error being reported is that those who did not owe or did not get a refund on their last return are stuck in limbo with the new IRS system. The IRS is aware of these and other issues and trying to correct them. They have advised they are doing multiple batches of stimulus check payments and those whose payment were held by due to IRS errors may start seeing them in coming weeks.

Can I contact the IRS for Stimulus Check Payment Issues or Errors? The IRS will be mailing Stimulus Payment Letters as mandated by the CARES act to each eligible recipient’s last known address 15 days after the payment is made. The letter will provide information on how the stimulus payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the payment. I am also reading the IRS or Treasury will launch a portal/site after the first round of stimulus payments are made for people to appeal payments and even start allowing their call centres to address stimulus payment issues.

Note that the IRS will not contact you about your stimulus check payment details either. Watch out for scams and people trying to steal this information from you in the name of expediting your Economic Impact Payments.

Child Support Arrears and Injured spouse claims? The IRS has confirmed that the stimulus check payments will NOT be offset or intercepted for those owe tax, have a payment agreement or owe other federal or state debts. It will however be OFFSET for past-due child support. This is because a court order for child support continues until it is modified or terminated. Similarly with unemployment compensation stimulus increases, your child support may be withheld from the UI payments. You will get a notice from BFS, along with your stimulus payment letter if this happens.

The IRS also stated that If you are married filing jointly and you filed an injured spouse claim with your 2019 tax return (or 2018 tax return if you haven’t filed your 2019 tax return), half of the total payment will be sent to each spouse and your spouse’s stimulus check payment will be offset only for past-due child support. There is no need to file another injured spouse claim for the payment.

Will there be another stimulus check? There is a high likelihood of this happening if the American economy does not improve after the Coronavirus induced recessions does not ease-up. See more in this article.

  1. I am on disability, and have not received my stimulas. Living on just disability pretty much pays my rent. How can I find out why? I have already called the number where they said you can talk to a real live person. Nope. Just automated. Please help.

  2. I went to the Get my payment site and it stated my check is scheduled to be mailed on April 24, 2020. I received a letter in the mail 9 days ago stating I was receiving 1200.00. I still have not received anything in the mail at my PO Bx. I checked my 1040 to confirm the address was correct and the letter came to my PO Bx. My question, is there any actual number to call to speak with an actual person?

  3. The “GET MY PAYMENT” link says this concerning my status:
    “Payment Status
We scheduled your payment to be deposited on April 29, 2020 to the bank account below.

    Bank Account Number: ************XXXX

If you don’t see your payment credited to your account, check with your bank to verify they received it. We will mail you a letter with additional information on this payment.”

Now My Question is: why hasn’t it reached my bank account yet? Today is MAY 11TH,2020…

    1. Allen mine says the same thing*\ April 29, I have called my Bank 10 times to no avail** The government should not tell us the money is going to be put in there if it is not**

      1. Ours says the same but ours was taken for child support. But then the kicker came in the mail yesterday. The letter from the president on how he helped us all out with the stimulus. Wtf

        1. Well, if you owed past due child support, I don’t believe that is the President’s fault. Now is it?

        2. LMFAO we don’t really owe just a mess up with the court communication with child support. So easy for people to throw out insults.

  4. I am a non filer. I received my check on 5/8/2020. It did not include the $500.00 payment for my dependent grandson whom I have had custody of for the last 2 1/2 years. I entered his information on the no filers form, along with mine. He has not claimed by anyone as a dependent, and I am the only one supporting him.

    1. i have the same problem. i got the check but it did not include the $500.00 payment for my 2 kids. I hope the error can be fix soon.

  5. I owe child support I know they will apply my 1200.00$ to my back child support but will I still receive the $500.00 for my dependent child who is disabled and he gets SSI monthly and I’m his beneficiary

    1. I have a disabled son that is 33. I do claim him on my taxes. He has not recieved his money yet. I see things about he may not be eligible or he may be eligible but not enough info. He has a savings account in his name and also mine. Just wondering if he is eligible or not. Thank you

  6. I receive Social Security still waiting on my payment. The IRS get my payment tool does not work for me. What is going on.

  7. They seperated my and my husband stimulus but still took mine to pay what he owed in back child support. Whats messed up is the kids gave lived with us off and on and when they didnt live with us they were with us 3 or 4 days a week. That whole time the other parent collected food stamps and cash aid. While I stuggled to take care of my kids and step kids… I filed injured spouse with my tax return in the middle of February. I still havent recieved anything on my tax return and they took my part of the stimulus. I lost my job. Now that theres no school the kids are always at our house. I angers me. She sure got her money even tho we take care of the kids and I have no help.

    1. I got my 1200 but not the 500 and I so needed it to to pay bills cause I lost my job and have to take care of my 17 year old with no child support or anything and I didn’t get the 500 and I was depending on it and on top of it all I don’t get a raise on my stamps either

    2. I am in the same boat.. It really isnt fair is it?? No tax return and I filed in January.. Then a pandemic hits where EVERYONE is affected, not just the woman who receives child support. So she gets 2 stimulus checks and her tax return. I am a single mother too yet, I am being punished because I am married to someone who had kids from a previous marriage.. So I guess her family is more important than mine.. it really makes me sick and sad and angry.. I have a kid too.. I get that his portion should have been taken but mine?? Actually I really dont think in this situation ANYONE’S portion should have been taken.. Did i fail to mention, she is receiving monthly child support plus extra garnishment because he was out of work for 6 months last year.. So she is not hurting at all..

    3. I too got the same problem I filled injured spouse on my taxes for both yrs and the irs has my file and the they took his stimulus check for his back child support and mine and my daughter that I claim and she is not even his or his ex wife but my daughter get punished for it and his ex wife got the glory I am so upset and failed my daughter that makes me so mad at myself that I get sick at my stomach and cant even get an answer with the irs cause I cant talk to a live person not right .

      1. My getmypayment says the check was scheduled to be mailed on May 8. No signs of anything.. And to top it off, its going to an address I no longer live at. :-(

  8. My husband and I are both on disability. I went to the IRS sight and on Monday they told me mine would be deposited (today) 4/29/2020 My husband still has no info on when he will get his. I have been searching for info everywhere and have been getting nowhere. Will he get his separate even though we are married? According to IRS SSDI recipients will be finished up getting theirs by 4/29 So where’s his? He doesn’t pay support so there’s no issue with that. Are they behind on sending the checks? It clearly says every tax payer will be getting the full amount!!!

    1. I have a card from hñrblock and it said no information and the IRS website always tells me the SSN is wrong

  9. I have been trying to get info for two weeks about my payment. The IRS website listed the correct bank account info (“your payment will be deposited into bank account ending in xxxx…”) and said that my direct deposit payment was sent on April 15th. I just received the IRS letter confirming the “payment” signed by Trump. I’ve been frantically calling my bank every day since the 15th and there is no sign of it. The IRS letter provides zero info on how to report this, and lists a dead end phone number leading to an automated maze with no mechanism to report anything. How is this possible?

  10. Chock up more parents here that got the stimulus for myself and my wife ($2400) but didn’t receive anything for our 4 underage children that we claim every year on our taxes without reason. Lord knows how the IRS could mess things up when they already have all the information…

  11. This is incorrect for the injured spouse, Me along with thousands of others have filed injured spouse EVERY year, the IRS messed up for the stimulus, they split the stimulus in half and then gave child support BOTH portions of the stimulus leaving me and my three children with nothing. I get taking my husbands but not the entire house hold amount . ( please save the ” people who owe child support are dead beats” crap talk because you don’t know our situation or many others who are going through this same thing). I just wish people would quit issuing articles or information stating that the injured spouse form will suffice and start reporting the fact that IT DID NOT get processed.

    1. AMEN! As long as articles like this and the news is reporting that the whole situation with child support offset is black and white, cut and dry and working seamlessly as the IRS indicated it should then no real attention is given to the fact that many households in need of money just like everyone else are being left out to dry and being failed. As someone on both sides of the child support offset stipulation (My ex is in arrears for our 2 children and my current husband being in arrears after losing his job and not having income for 4 months to meet his obligation) I don’t feel that if the purpose of the stimulus was to provide relief to Americans struggling to make ends meet during a pandemic, that any debt offset should be allowed. For real deadbeat parents who have this debt, why basically throw them a freebie in the form of free money from the government to pay their child support debt? They should be responsible for paying the debt from their hard earned money.
In my situation, I had 2 kids from a previous marriage and 1 with my current husband, we are a 5 person household (6 when my stepdaughter visits 3 days each week) yet the government sent a whole $3400 that our household could have really used to a 2 person household to settle and basically pay off my husband’s entire child support debt. Not to mention that 2 person household already received a $1200 stimulus so a total of $4600 windfall. It’s infuriating especially bc as you mentioned everyone’s situation does not automatically equal deadbeat parent, my husband is actively paying $1300/mo in child support plus an additional $287/mo to pay off his arrears.

    2. April when you checked the irs website….did it say your money was being deposited? I checked the payment for mine & my husbands & it says it is scheduled to be deposited today & my husband owes back support he’s not behind on any payments & my stepson is grown. I was just wondering if they were gonna take it or if it would be deposited. I was wondering what kind of message ppl are getting on the where’s my payment tool if child support is taking it? Thanks! & I’m sooo sorry u didn’t get your payment that really sucks! These baby moms are getting paid!! & it’s crap! It’s BS!

      1. Marie, on the IRS website ‘Get Payment’ status when I entered my info the date was for 4/30 deposit and to my personal checking acct. When entering my husband’s it showed the same date for deposit but to our joint checking account number. On Monday after hearing from my sister who had the same deposit date we did confirm that her deposit had just hit her account. We checked both my personal and our joint and nothing. We then called the treasury offset line (800-304-3107) and sure enough the recording said there were two offsets recently applied in the amount of $1600. So even though the IRS did split the amount between each spouse, both amounts were intercepted or sent to the treasury offset department.

  12. We were very thankful to receive the $2400.00 stimulus payment but have yet to receive the $1500.00 for the children ages 2 (set of twins) and 6 claimed on our taxes. As. my husband has been out of work for over 6 weeks and has not gotten a paycheck, this money is very much needed to pay our bills, utilities, and mortgage. When can we expect that money if at all? Thank You for allowing me to ask.

    1. For anyone who did not receive the stimulus money for their children you will be receiving a letter in the mail that, as I understand, is supposed to have contact information where you can let them know any mistakes that were made with the payment.

      1. Got the letter and all they give is a phone number that tells you they will not give live assistance and does not give you any means of reporting errors. like not getting money for children.

        1. Can you send me a copy of the letter (saving2invest@gmail.com). You can hide or redact any sensitive information

        2. Shoukd have known. That is not what they initially said. They reported that it would give you a direct contact you could reach to advise them of errors.

  13. Why is the same message that you are eligible and they have your dd info and will update not updating? It’s been the same message for a week now. They gave a time frame of several days and now just nothing! Do they know when they are depositing the money and is this just another glitch and that’s why we can’t see an update?

  14. WHY IS THE IRS NOT HONORING THE INJURED SPOUSE FORM 8379??? Please help us injured spouses. Our money and OUR children’s money is going to exes even though or money should be protected! These baby mommas with multiple children and multiple partners are making tens of thousands off this error!!! While our children suffer!

    1. I am in the same boat as you Susan. I received my 2019 tax refund for filing 8379 in March. I received a letter saying I was eligible for stimulus payment but never received the funds. My husband’s ex did recieve the $1200 for his portion of the $2400 however so where is my portion?

  15. Yeah and what about the that actually are HOMELESS and ARE GETTING SSI AND SSDI AND ARE DOING DRUGSand already received there Stimulus Payment but the people like me that are married and have not even gotten a DAMN PAYMENT I THINK THAT THAT IRS NEEDS TO DO WHAT THEY NEED TO DO THE IRS MADE EVERYTHING RIGHT WITH UNEMPLOYMENT AND BUSINESSESS

    1. I could not agree more!!!!!!! Only about people who take advantage of the governmental help, not people who really need it. I have seen many who who get benefits, lie about their situation and got stimulus payments for themselves and 3 to 4 kids 500 each child first.
I had cancer, and I have children. I worked all my life and now when we need it the most. I did all the right things, filled out the non filer form for my dependents and bank information yet Not getting anything for my children. It also makes me so mad to see that our veterans have to wait, and they should have been well taken care of,not with just this but all military should be taken care of all their lives and never have to worry about asking for any help. The military should all be our first priority with making sure they have healthcare, food, and a steady income for life. If all the people in power have good healthcare, great incomes, and many benefits, the same should apply to all our military !

    2. Yes. It is a conspiracy. I do wonder though how exactly they contacted those homeless SSI and SSDI recipients to verify they were in fact drug users so that they could make sure they got their checks before you got your check. Must have been on their Obama phones.

  16. Same here I filed as an injured spouse 8379 form and they took everything. I didn’t get half.

  17. Mine says I’m elegible for payment and once we have payment date they will update the page. Have you seen this one? It’s been same for a week. Thanks kim

    1. Yes, than means the IRS has approved your payment but not scheduled. They are paying in multiple batches so you’ll get your payment relatively soon if your direct deposit details are on file. Check payment may take a few weeks.

    2. I have been getting the same message for about a week now and still no update. I just want to know how soon will I receive my payment

  18. Except those of us who DID file an Injured Spouse claim for child support received $0. That’s the problem. We need to feed our kids too.

    1. I am a single dad and I claim my son every year and I met all requirements for the 500.00 for dependents, yet I only received the 1,200. The IRS used my 2019 tax return to obtain my bank information and yet they skipped over seeing that I have a qualifying dependent. If the tables were turned and I owed them 500.00 they wouldn’t miss that on my return.
