2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

We cannot provide any information about your refund. Be sure to:
    •verify your filing date;
•check with your tax preparer or tax software provider; or
•verify you received your electronically filed acknowledgement e-mail.

If you filed a complete and accurate tax return, your refund should be issued within 21 days of the received date. Processing may take longer under certain circumstances.
WTH DOES THIS MEAN ITS RIGHT

  5. So I’ve read recent posts, but if anybody could respond that’s in my situation please:
I have a GREENDOT that I choose to file return on THRU TAXACT. I was approved before feb18th, and had a deposit date showing 2/23 on IRS.gov, so reading the recent posts here, in nervous that I have not received funds. I filed EIC, and I called the federal trust bank and the prompts ended leading to a status of my refund received and sent to my bank. After reading the post today here, it’s obviuous if I DD to a major branch like BOA or Chase, that I would have refund. So long story short, is there anybody with PREPAID DEBIT that e filed thru TAXACT, preferably a GREENDOT card, that was showing funds expected on feb. 23rd and has gotten it? Or that has feb 22, and got it today? Thank you

    • That’s not true. So many people I know got theirs a day early. I’m supposed to get mine by tomorrow as well and I’m still waiting. But everyone I live around and talked to that used the netspend premiere card all got theirs the day before their ddd. Only thing is it can come at ANYTIME in the day. Some got theirs at 5 some at 2 and some in the Morning. It’s just a waiting game. And I myself am getting very annoyed cause I’ve been waiting over a month for my money.

      Reply
      • I did some research and on some of the prepaid cards the limit is 9,999. If your refund exceeds that amount it will be sent as a paper check.

  11. Has anyone who was expecting a paper check received it yet? I filed with DD but due to the amount of my refund apparently they are sending a paper check instead. So after all the delays I am now delayed even longer. Just wondering if any checks have been received yet

    • Really? Not being rude but how much was it? I’m wondering because after my advance mine is 10,800. So you don’t have to give me an exact number, just say if it was higher or lower because I’m wondering if they’ll do the same to me.

      • I didn’t take an advance and my refund is right under $13,000. (5 kids and a stepson we claim) and mine was approved on the 18th and was DD today.

        • Thanks for the info. Really hope you get it soon. I’m so tired of all this. I know everybody is. It’s been 33 days since I filed. Enough is enough. And what they did to you is wrong. You mean they had to wait until today to figure out that was much for them to direct deposit? Smh

  12. Cody I think you should if it was done before 2. Sorry I tried to respond to your post but it didn’t give me a reply option so I just posted it here.

  13. I was just wondering if anyone else is having the same issues that I am. I filed my returns on Jan. 18 and they were received in late Jan. Since then I have checked WMR and the irs2go app everyday and have yet to have a status bar or a date or even a tax topic. All mine has been saying from day one is “we have received your return and it is being processed” it’s been well over a month since I filed and I’ve called the IRS twice in the past week and a half and they keep telling me the same thing, that my return was relieved and it’s being processed and looks fine. I know about the PATH Act and that it affects me because I have dependents but my sister and neighbors have dependents and just got theirs refund today. Just looking to see if anyone else has these issues or any answers. Thanks

    • I am having the same issue. Mine still says processing. I had an education credit for my son and EIC.. But that was it. Pretty straight forward and I’m not even gettin much back.. Very frustrating. It’s been 30 days since I filed.

    • Hi Michael, I’m having the same problem, which is why I’m here. My return was accepted on Jan 12, and it says the exact same thing as yours when I check the status. Haven’t tried calling yet. Hopefully someone can answer this question for us soon? My friends and family have also been approved and given dates. I filed as self employed, since I have only worked cleaning houses and other personal jobs which don’t require any kind of W2 or 1099 forms. Wondering if perhaps that is the reason why it’s taking longer….?

    • I’m having the same issue as well. I had bars at first but then they disappeared like 3 weeks ago. No DDD, no bars, and no PATH message. I called IRS and they said its on a normal hold and that there not releasing any funds until the week of the 27th. I filed 1/21 and accepted on 1/23… And still no update!

This makes absolutely no sense to me, they have held it since Feb 15 what can they possibly still be processing they have had all that time between 1/24-2/15. I’m very frustrated.

    • I called the IRS bank number yesterday & it told me the same thing. My funds were given to TT bank this morning. I got an email from TT Bank that my funds were sent to my personal bank…still waiting.

  23. Well I checked the TPG website (how turbo tax takes its fees out) IRS released my funds this morning. But it has not showed up in my bank account as of yet. It also says it can take up to 1-2 business days to direct deposit. My DDD was 2/23/17… So if I did not have to have fees taken out it would have showed up this morning. I will keep you all posted…

  24. Well since the IRS was delaying taxes due to the PATH I decided to wait until 2/19/17 to file. No point in filing early getting my nerves worked up with the extra wait time. Monday was a holiday so I expected a delay. Checked online WMR this morning and it says no info found. However I called the 800 number and it said received/ processing. The online tools are not accurate per my recent experience and others. I heard that if you are getting more than $3000 IRS will be looking a little closer. I work two jobs & they deducted taxes without delay each pay period. Granted they are trying to reduce fraud but the crooks had 365 days to get their strategy together. I would think that by 12/31 of each year the IRS would have a strategy that runs smoothly for honest tax payers. I know that I just filed lol but every year after busting my behind they find a way to tee me off ie delays, new rules/laws, overload of returns, inaccurate info. Etc. I don’t qualify for social services which is cool because I am able to work for my needs and wants. So yes I look forward to my tax returns. To top off my rant off I’m $1000 less this year although my oldest turned 18 last year and now in college. Good luck to each of you & thanks for sharing your tax journey.

    • WMR I’m with you…regardless of the refund amt..it very unfortunate that the incompetence of the IRS got us into this mess..so furious with them..absolutely BS that we have to wait for over a month to receive the funds we worked hard for but they’re so quick to take money away from you if you owe them a single dime..unreal!!!

    • I don’t know about the $3000 thing because I filed back in January on the 17th and it was accepted an hour after filing. It was approved the 18th and gave me a date of 2/23 for DD. Then this morning I got. Atext that the money was sent to my bank and I got back right under $13,000. So they didn’t look too long and hard at mine. I had my hisnband, my 5 children and my stepson on mine though and I went back to grad school last year so mine was higher than it normally is. I would think if they were looking into things more they would have looked at it longer since it was more than normal. But nope. I think it seems to be more random in whose gets looked at and verified from what I’m seeing.

  26. I was a victim of tax identity theft last year so this year I was sent an IRS pin numbe,r which I used and I’m wondering if that could be delaying my taxes which I filed on February 1, 2017 and my status just say my taxes are still being processed and a refund date will be provided when available……

  27. My return was accepted on 2/13/17 and continues to only show as received on WMR. I have code 152 only. It never usually takes this lomg. It’s frustrating to think I have to wait 21 days to possibly be told I need to ID verify or something else that will cause further delay.

Has anyone with EITC, CTC and PTC who filed around the same date received a DDD yet? I used TT if that makes any difference.

    Thanks!

  28. Just called the number to the IRS’s bank (866) 581-1040 at 7 this morning and it said they had not received my refund. Called again at 9 and they had received it and sent it to my bank. It’s not showing in my account yet, so it probably won’t until in the morning. Usually my bank posts deposits at 6am. It may show today but I’m gonna assume it will be tomorrow. I had a DDD of 2/23, filed through Tax Act and bank with USAA.

      • Don’t feel bad. I filed January 20th and assumed since it was so early I would be one of the first on the 15th to get it. I finally got a ddd on the 18th for 2-23 and still waiting. They are just being EXTREMELY slow this year. I hope you get it soon.

    • I filed with TT on 2/3 and accepted the same day. WMR still says:

Your tax return is still being processed.

A refund date will be provided when available.

      • So it seems like January filers are being cleared out first because it looks like almost everyone who filed in feb is still waiting for a date.

        • Not necessarily. I filed early Jan was accepted Jan 17th and IRS.gov only said “return being processed”. I calked on fed 14 was told being reviewed for premium tax credit (Marketplace insurance) and could take an additional 6 weeks. It’s madness.

  30. Ok so I finally got my dd today at 9am.. That’s usually the time banks set dd for. That and around 2 pm. But anyways my ddd was for 2/23. I bank with a small local bank. Good luck to everyone else and try not to panic unless you’re past your ddd. Big banks like Wells Fargo and bb&t are greedy and won’t post anything til the ddd

  31. For anyone who still has theirs processing, make an attempt to contact irs if able to. I called this morning and I got to fax back some info that was missing so it could be that. I filed Feb. 1st and got accepted that day but I waited the after 21 day mark to finally call. Imma fax it off today but now it’s just how long the wait going to be to get my refund now. I got a child and bills and finally got off maternity leave and started back work yesterday so this wait for my money I worked for is stressful. And bills adding up.

    • Did they give you a fax number? I need to send in for PTC but would rather not wait to receive their form in the mail as it hasn’t been mailed yet.

  32. I’m confused because we did our taxes the 23 of Jan and I had filed e-file but had instead of direct deposit had to do check. So when I am looking at the refund site it says my money will be in the bank on the 23 but if not in by the 28 to call and check with the bank. So I don’t know if it’s actually going in the bank or if I will still receive a check.
