2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

  1. I mailed mines in on the 2/02/17 and it was received by the 6th. Wmr didn’t show it being received until they started processing it on the 2/17/17 and has been showing processing ever since. I decided to call today and they told me it was under review but they’re done and suppose to be releasing my funds today, a hard check for some reason. Even though they released my funds it doesn’t mean they’re gonna cut a check today and it could take up to 4 weeks to receive it. If I don’t receive it in 4 weeks I was advised to call back . I hate the fact I paid my taxes on time but it’s taking so long for me to get my loan back

  2. Was just informed by IRS that my returns are held for identity verification BUT they said they sent the required letter to the wrong address–and I have to wait for a new one (2 weeks to send), wait for an appointment, and then 9 weeks to process. I’m now three more months away. Unemployed, overdrawn, broken. The only option to provide the money to take care of my kids is my life insurance–I have to provide for my kids, by any means necessary. I’m afraid this is my only option–I’ve have thought this through and see no other way. I did everything the way I was supposed to, but they didn’t–and now my family is going to pay an incredible price. I just can’t do this anymore.

The posts in here have been helpful–thank you. I hope everyone’s issues work out and refunds start appearing–and I truly hope none of you folks feel compelled to take such drastic actions as I have decided to. Best of luck.

    • David….I’m not sure if you have a relationship with God but I just want you to know that God is a provider. Keep your head up and trust and believe that death is not the answer. Quick money goes fast. A life insurance policy payout will not sustain your family forever, but you as the head of your family will. God is amazing and your life is more valuable that money. I must say, suicidal thoughts is from the devil and the Devil is a liar. Hold on, your money is on the way. In the mean time don’t give up. God has a plan for everyone and if you haven’t gotten to know him, try him. He’s a great friend, doctor and provider. I hope and pray you are able to receive this message in time and know that life is more valuable than money…..May God bless you and your family with all that you need.

  4. Just got off the phone with the IRS about 10 minutes ago. Finished return on Jan. 19th via Turbo Tax. Cust. Service Rep told me that they didn’t start accepting returns this year until Jan. 29th (first I’d heard of that.) Also was told that I should have a letter any day now requesting an additional piece of information, but of course she couldn’t tell me what that was and it couldn’t be handled over the phone (would have been too easy.) All the while I’ve been checking WMR multiple times per day and have had the same message since Feb. 16th “we have received your return and it is being processed.” The ultimate kicker is that this action required by the letter I’m receiving could extend my timeline out 30-45 days! Unbelievable.

  6. The IRS is a flipping joke. I’m *hoping* Trump has some influence in changing how the IRS works (or getting rid of it altogether) in the near future. We had our return accepted by the IRS on February 10th, and opted for direct deposit, and STILL NO REFUND. Pathetic.

  7. So if there’$ gonna be a 140 million filers this year… there must be a 1 million irs employees working there so they can process all of us in just 3 months. I wonder if they process themselves first and their families and their friends next…so the rest of us have to wait so long haha…Im serious. Good luck everybody.

  9. I just want to say how helpful all of your comments have been for me today and how grateful I am to have found this site. I’m experiencing basically the same thing as everyone else. My status still says received and processing. I have not received a letter. I did have the EIC and when I spoke with the IRS last week the rep said my return looked fine and there was no action needed. He said to just be patient. I’m so glad to hear that other people are going through this and hopefully we will all get the funds we need soon. Luck to you all.

    • Me too! So frustrated with this. This is the first year that I have ever had this problem. Today is day 21. The status has been received and processing for about 20 days now. I called today, got a hold of a live person (finally), and he transferred me to the status line….. OMG!

  10. Filed Feb. 6th and they received it the same day.
Called the IRS two weeks ago and they told us they were sending out a letter Mar. 6th (today). We called again this morning and they said it wouldn’t get here until the 13th.

Because my husband just lost his job, we called the tax advocate service and were denied help because when we filed we had applied for a refund advance loan (which we were denied for). So, now we’re most likely going to be evicted or at least without utilities with the small children in the house. What can we do? Is there even anything we can do?

    • Tired of the bull I called last week and was told I should have already received a letter stating that I was under review but haven’t received any letter. I decided to call back this morning and spoke with a tax advocate who said that they are not mailing the letter out until the 13th of this month I filed on February 9th and it was accepted the same exact night I thought about seeing if the tax advocate could help if I still don’t receive a letter by the end of next week I’m tired of the waiting game. If I receive the letter I will keep you posted because the irs said they didn’t need any additional information from me but tax advocate said it’s very likely they do need more info

      • We did get our letter today. When we had called they said nothing was wrong. And the letter basically says the same but they’re running it again just to make sure and we should just wait. 60 days from the date of the letter (3/3). Hoping that they’ll run it sooner and see that nothing is wrong.

Hope for the best for you!!

      • I just called today (March 8, 2017 at 9:00am EST). I filed my taxes on 02/10/2017. Was told I have a CP05 letter being sent via mail on 3/13/2017. Also said I need to take no actions and it could take up to 2 weeks for the letter to arrive in my mailbox. I think they are intentionally holding everyone’s money because they know next year additional cuts will be coming from Trump. Gee…..Thanks!!

I’m a hard working mom of 3 and we needed that money to get through the end of the school year with spring break camp costs, end of year field trips, paying off debt etc. like many of you probably reading this.

This waiting game sucks! I wish they would just keep it real because they have no problem snatching taxes biweekly from my paycheck.

  14. “still processing…will provide a refund date when available”–the IRS is “still processing” but I’m still bleeding money. In all honesty, I am down to $130 in the bank, $43 in my pocket, and a couple of decent personal belongings remaining to take to a pawn shop. My 13 year-old actually tried to lend me the $300 he has saved (he lives with his mother)–I almost cried (but I was also really proud of him). He actually is worth more than I am at the moment. It’s hard enough day in and day out to live this way, but right now it is compounded with a feeling that my government is failing me. I might be unemployed right now, but I earned that refund last year when I had a good job–that’s my money. If I had worked with the unbelievable (and inexcusable) inefficiency and insensitivity of the IRS, I would I have been fired before the end of my first day in my job. Worst part about that is, no one with any power/influence/compassion will care enough to hold this bloated government agency responsible. This might seem like a strong statement to some, but I feel that unquestionably our government has failed us. Of the people, by the people, and for the people–what a joke.

  15. So this is the message I have on IRS2GO

There is a delay in processing your tax return.
If you have questions or need additional information, please have the following on hand when you call: A copy of this page. A copy of your tax return. The Social Security Number, Filing Status, and refund amount claimed on your return. Any notice that you have received concerning your refund.
Please mention reference number 1541 to the IRS Customer Service Representative
IRS Hours of Service: Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On WMR…there is a exclamation mark and the word ACTION.

    Any comments?

And I have not received any notification also she told me not to call back until 4 weeks later to the day I called . today is March 5 th and my return still says processing . When will I get a notice? Or will I even get my refund ?

    • I am still waiting for my refund or a notice on my refund . It has been 9 weeks now and heard nothing. I finally called a tax advocate to see if they could help and I no is they held mine to verify my income . That should tell the IRS I am in need of my money to live on . In stead they hold it and don’t tell me nothing so it will even take that many more weeks to get it . This system need to get fixed because it’s not working for the poor people like me .

“They are holding to draw as much interest as they can before they have to release it. I’d be calling them every morning, find one person by name, and ask them everyday where your money is. I did that in Louisiana once, her name was Alice, lol that I remember that!! Anyway got my check five days later. I called her every morning for a week and on Friday I said I’ll talk to you Monday!! She no, you don’t have to!! “

    • I still haven’t heard or received anything yet. I filed on 1/20 got accepted on 1/23. Called the tax advocate they transfer me to the IRS. I asked what the hold up was after still seeing they had received my return and still being processed. They told me that if I haven’t heard anything by 3/17 to call back. They also told me that I was not expected to get any letters, but they are taking a lot longer than they should with processing.

Now when I call offset line I have no debt owed. Are they still taking my money even though I paid it and will my bar come back?

  22. I filed and was accepted on Feb 8. A few days later the timeline on WMR disappeared and read there’s a delay in processing with code 1541. Finally today the timeline came back and said my refund was accepted and it will be sent by March 8. I’m guessing the IRS is just way behind. Have patience and everything will work out. My family needed this bad!

    • My online banking app says my refund will be posted tomorrow. Thank God. Our wonderful President is cutting funding to the IRS and that’s why it’s taking so long to process these returns.

      • I read this morning that the IRS paid out like $64million in fraudulent returns last year. They’re just trying to catch the errors because it costs them a lot of money. In addition, they’ve updated their systems and ran into some initial errors. This is what is causing a lot of the headache. Most of the returns that were fraudulent claimed the child tax credits. Hence the reason a lot of you are caught up.

The state refunds are a different matter. California simply is staggering refunds because of lack of funds on their end. BS, I know, but unfortunately, we can’t do anything. The best we can do is to try to either owe or get nothing back.

We had called late last week and they told us they’d be sending a letter on March 6th. Hopefully we’ll be lucky and get a date too!

      • I called March 1st and the rep said he didn’t even know when the letter went out??? I was waiting to receive it either today or next Saturday cause apparently that’s when they come but decided to check and it changed from that exclamation mark and on the WMR app to accepted and a date. .. I will definitely post on here if and when I actually see it in my account. Also I live in Georgia and fraud is big out here so a review is just to make sure.

My problem was I filed with my last pay stubs and I was unable to submit my W2 form in time.
Hopefully everyone gets theirs in no time.

  25. My return was accepted on 2/11. Almost 2 weeks ago, I checked WMR and it had the big exclamation mark and said TAKE ACTION ! Please see below for more information about your refund. Well all it says below is:
There is a delay in processing your tax return. That is ALL ! At the bottom it says if you have questions, Contact Us. When I click on the CONTACT US link provided in that statement, it brings up Reference Code 1541. I had tried to order my transpripts but it kept telling me they were not available. I was able to order them on Wednesday, both my Accoynt & Return Transcript BUT that same message is still there. Anybody??

  26. Filed and was accepted January 13th with EIC so I knew they wouldn’t start processing until mid February. Today I am still getting the “processing ” status so I called.
I’m under a 60 day review which they started February 13th. No letter has been mailed yet but they have ordered one to be mailed. She couldn’t tell me for sure when but possibly March 13th. She said it would just say they are reviewing. There are no actions I need to take or further information they need from me at this point.

Are the 60 days only business days or 60 days in general?

    This is incredibly frustrating.

  27. My taxes were accepted on January 28th. I got a letter about mid February saying they needed my 1095 and form 8962 to continue processing my return. I faxed them my info last Tuesday so its been about a week and a half since i did so…i went to see if i could order my transcript just now and i was finally able to. They say to give it like 6 to 8 weeks for my return to finally come after i sent that info, but im curious…does it mean i wont have to wait that long to get it since i was able to order my transcript? Ive been reading the comments and it seems like its good news so far. Anyone know if that means maybe itll come soon? Please help! Lol

  28. I filed my taxes back on January 13th when I got my w2’s. I showed a status bar initially but now show only the “received refund and is being processed” nonsense. They said my return was being held because of the EITC and Child Tax Credit which I was aware of prior to filing my taxes. Now, we’re obviously well past the 2/15 date of processing of those held returns but they won’t give me any information as to why it’s being held. I’ve tried every trick in the book to try and get them to give me some sort of information but nothing is working. I’ve been filing the same for the last 5 years since my son was born. I don’t see what the hold up is. If there’s an issue with something like needing to confirm my identity, just tell me and I’ll send what I have to. Stop having me be stuck in la la land and give me some sort of update.

Starting to get incredibly frustrated over here.

      • Same here. Only difference is my husband was told last week that they would be sending a letter on March 6th. Why wait that long?? And they wouldn’t tell us what it would say it what was needed. It could even be a letter stating they were just going slow reviewing it. -_- so stupid.

      • Me either. And they said none have been generated (yet). It’s incredibly frustrating. It’s not that I NEED the money but it would certainly be nice considering I’m in the process of buying a home and would like the extra cash soon to cover extra closing costs and all.

Hopefully we all get some sort of update soon.

And I have yet to receive a date and they haven’t approved it yet I filled two of my kids on my taxes and now they have us waiting longer when people have things to pay with there money!

  37. Im sadly having a lot of the same problems. Im 21, single and have no children and nothing to really claim. My tax return was accepted Jan 31st and I waited the typical 21 days and I had nothing. Then the information bar completely went away and about 7 days later the IRS says its processing. My job made me part time for this month and I was really hoping for my tax money to help support me instead of the $35 dollars in my bank account. This sucks. Causing so many problems and heartache for people.

  38. Does anyone know if there is any way to get help before the dreaded 21 day wait has ended? I’m down to $300 in my checking after some bills, with no solid income on the horizon (I’m unemployed), so I’m really on the verge of collapse here. I’m in the “accepted 2/17–processing with WMR bars–bars disappear–stuck at the ‘still be processed…date will be provided when available’ stage.” I’m getting close to living in my car with my dog unless my refund arrives soon. Like most here, I’m unbelievably frustrated, but I’m also really scared. Does anyone have some insight on how I can find help, or am just stuck at the mercy of a mammoth, bloated, immoveable government bureaucracy? Sometimes I feel like I care more about this country than the government does…”of the people, for the people, and by the people”…my @ss…

  39. I just called the IRS they say my taxes are under review. My husband and I have four children, three of which are ours and a foster son. She told me I had to wait, it could take up to sixty days… We have never had any issues ever before, never had to pay ever, in fact we both pay in extra so we don’t. We need our money, like I said I have a family of four children and I am trying to do the right thing here by helping the government by raising some else child and not asking them for assistance. I know they have to keep us safe but I do think if records are under review there has to be a faster process. Btw I had my taxes done by a Brooker doesn’t that count in the governments eye for something. It’s not like I did the on line.
