2024 SNAP (Food Stamps) Benefits and Maximum Monthly EBT Benefit after End of Extra Pandemic EA Payments

This article provides updates on the nation’s food stamp program, known officially as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), for the latest and prior federal fiscal years. The latest 2024 fiscal year began in October 2023, and updated benefits are provided below.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service sets the guidelines for the state administered SNAP program, which helps feed more than 40 million Americans.

For 2024, the average family of four living in the 48 contiguous states and DC., will see their maximum allotment rise to $973 from $939 in the prior year. See other household size increases in the maximum allotment tables later in this article.

The minimum benefit will remain at $23, which is adversely affecting many seniors. The shelter deduction, which helps homeless people via additional SNAP benefits, will increase to nearly $180 in 2024.

Additional SNAP Emergency allotments (EA) which provided a “pandemic” boost to existing recipients ended in February 2023 with final payments disbursed in March 2023. See sections below for more details.

Given how many economically marginalized people rely on SNAP, there are ongoing discussions in Congress to increase benefits via adjusting eligibility criteria or provide one-time boosts. I will continue to post updates as they are released.

Eligibility and Applying for SNAP

The SNAP program follows federal guidelines, but household eligibility is based on certain requirements (like income thresholds shown below) are determined and paid by the relevant state agency when you apply for benefits.

Your state agency or local SNAP office will generally process your application within 30 days and send you a letter confirming your eligibility and duration for receiving benefits.

Your state SNAP agency may conduct additional verification of your information during the application period and follow-up with additional questions, if needed. So ensure you respond promptly to any calls or official notices.

All benefits are back-dated to when you submit your application for benefits and you will be paid any retroactive benefits in your first deposit.

When Are SNAP benefits paid?

While the program is federally funded, it is administered by each state. You will need to see your state’s SNAP/Food Stamp page (google it) for when your state is supposed to automatically load your benefits onto the states approved Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) debit card.

Generally it is based on your first or last name and loaded by your state agency on pre-set dates every month.

You can use your EBT card to buy approved groceries and related items at stores and retailers. This includes the following:

Income Eligibility Standards

The USDA has also finalized the following monthly income eligibility standards tables for FY 2024.

SNAP monthly income eligibility standards tables for FY 2024.
SNAP monthly income eligibility levels for FY 2024 (source: USDA)

Generally, your household must meet both the gross and net income limits described below to be eligible for SNAP benefits. The exception is for households with an elderly or disabled person, which only has to meet the net income limit.

Calculation of actual SNAP allotment Payment

Your maximum SNAP allotment could be lower than than the maximum, even if you meet income thresholds above, because SNAP households are expected to spend about 30% of their own resources on food. This note include the temporary pandemic SNAP benefit discussed below.

Your actual allotment is calculated by multiplying your household’s net monthly income by 0.3, and subtracting the result from the maximum monthly allotment for your household size.

So for example, if Mary and Joe, who have 3 kids make $2,000 in net monthly income, their actual allocation will be $3,518 (5 person household max allotment) – 30%*2000 minus = $2,918.

SNAP EA Pandemic Payments – 2023 Emergency Allotments and Schedule

The 15% (minimum of $95) SNAP pandemic emergency boost, or emergency allotment (EA), has now ended and those states that were still participating in this program will be making final, mainly catch-up or retroactive, payments in March and April.

See more around future SNAP changes and emergency allotment updates in this YT video.

Will Extra SNAP EA Benefits Be Paid After March 2023?

No. Pandemic-era expansions (emergency allotments) of the SNAP program, including free school meal benefits were not funded in the 2023 government spending omnibus bill and will expire in March 2023.

This will mean an at least $95 monthly SNAP benefits cut to eligible households in states where the extra emergency allotments are being paid (see list above).

Households that received both SNAP and Social Security benefits may also experience a significant decrease in their “normal” SNAP benefits after the EA allotments expire, due to the record COLA for Social Security benefits (which impact SNAP income limits) that took effect at the start of this year.

As a result older adults and seniors could see their monthly SNAP benefits cut to just $23 on average as the pandemic SNAP/food stamp EA benefits are phased-out.

$40 Summer EBT Grocery Benefit for Kids (from 2024)

While SNAP emergency allotments were not extended, a new program was (permanently) funded in the omnibus bill that provides a $40 per month grocery benefit for kids, starting in the summer of 2024.

Children would be eligible for $40 grocery benefit – paid via reloadable debit cards – during the summer of 2024. Enrollment would be automatic for kids who already qualify for free or reduced price school meals.

The grocery benefit will be adjusted for inflation and will increase over time. It is estimated that this program, the largest such program in over 50 years, will help over 30 million children and significantly reduce hunger and food insecurity for lower income families.

Prior Year Updates

2022 Maximum SNAP Benefits

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which manages the SNAP program, under direction from the Biden administration confirmed the 2022 increase which reflects higher costs for a nutritious diet in line with rising food prices.

This will bring the average FY 2022 total monthly benefit to $169 and marks the largest ever permanent increase (25%) of food aid available to needy families.

The table below shows the maximum SNAP monthly allotment by household size. It is effective for the period covering October 1, 2021 – September 30, 2022.

[2020 Update] Under President Biden’s new economic agenda he has signed an executive order instructing the U.S. Department of Agriculture to allow states to increase SNAP (food stamp) benefits by 15%. Per the update below, Congress had boosted the maximum SNAP benefit by 15%, but that did not help the 40% of SNAP recipients who were already at the maximum benefit. If states follow the updated guidance an additional 12 million people would get the enhanced benefits.

As part of his American Rescue Plan proposal, President Biden is calling on Congress to provide additional support to ensure that all Americans, regardless of background, have access to healthy, affordable groceries….to help women, infants and children get the food they need. USDA will consider issuing new guidance that would allow states to increase SNAP emergency allotments for those who need it most.

Maximum 2021 SNAP Benefits

2020 – 2021 COVID Relief Bill Increase (Congress passed)

Under the recently passed $900 billion COVID relief bill, $13 billion of additional funding was allocated to the SNAP/Food stamp program, which increases the maximum benefits through the food assistance program through June 30, 2021. The main benefit, which was missing from the original stimulus bill, is an across-the-board 15% increase in monthly SNAP benefits for the next six months, starting January. 1st 2021. This will benefit approximately 43 million Americans receiving food stamps. The package also expands eligibility for SNAP benefits to lower income college students, while the elderly will see a boost in funding for the Older Americans Act nutrition programs ($175 million).

[Sep 2020] With no new stimulus package currently approved by a divided Congress, the following are COVID SNAP adjustments still available:

Emergency Allotments (EA): States can issue emergency supplements to SNAP households that normally receive less than the maximum benefit.

Pandemic EBT (P-EBT): States can provide benefits (similar to SNAP or “food stamps”) to children who normally receive free or reduced-price school meals.

SNAP Online Purchasing: The Food and Nutrition services (FNS) department has rapidly expanded SNAP online purchasing to support social distancing, bringing access to nearly three-quarters of the states, covering 90% of SNAP households.

Extend certification periods for up to 6 months and adjust periodic report requirements for some or all households,. This option is only available to households with certification periods set to expire or periodic reports due on or before June 30, 2021.

[Update on Additional SNAP benefits] Under the recently proposed HEROs act House Democrats have included a provision is to boost the maximum SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) payment benefit by 15%. This is designed to help low income earners deal with the rising cost of food as a result of supply chain disruption and production shortages.

The HEROs act and included provisions will likely go through a lot of debates and changes due to strong opposition from moderate Democrats and Republicans who worry about the ballooning federal deficit. But if the economy does not improve and unemployment does not fall or there is a significant resurgence of the Coronavirus later this year then it seems almost certain a second stimulus package will be passed. I will post updates as they come to light.

Additional funding has been provided under the CARE stimulus bill, that provides some critical program funding for many middle and lower income American families. Key provisions include:

Child nutrition: $8.8 billion was provided for schools to give more flexibility around providing meals for students. Most areas where schools have been closed are now offering up to 2 free meals per day for school aged children. Another $450 million was provided for food banks and other community food distribution programs.

Food stamps/SNAP: $15.5 billion is going to the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to cover the cost of new applications to the program as a result of the coronavirus. Note however this does not increase monthly benefits, rather it just provides additional federal funding for the likely surge in new applicants. Many wanted the wanted the minimum SNAP benefit to be doubled (to $30 per month) and a 20% raise in the maximum benefit.

It is likely that more relief will come to the above program in the next stimulus, so please subscribe via the options below to get the latest updates.

And the price of food pretty much everything was less and you could have a stay at home mom and a dad who works. Coming from a house owner with with three kids. One bring an infant. Formula is close to 30$ a can! For a small can! This helps us so much and helps to feed my kids and my husband and I both work! So who is being lazy in this situation? Who is using the government in this situation? Stop your stereotyping and start to think man I’m really blessed that I’m not on this program because it doesn’t work out that way for everyone sweet heart. And like I said I husband and I work FULL TIME TO PROVIDE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND ITS STILL NOT ENOUGH!!!!

        • It doesn’t make sense. If we have billions to send to other countries to help them, then we should have the money to provide help for we, the people of the United States, who should come first! It’s like starving your own child, but feeding your next door neighbor’s child. Let’s take care of the needy here. The needy seniors. The disabled. The people who are just going through hard times who are really struggling and going through financial hardship. It’s good to provide for the kids summer lunches, but what about the rest of us? How much does $23 a month go, especially with food prices being the highest it’s ever been in history. To keep taking away programs and funds for the needy is wrong when billions are being sent to other countries to help them. I believe in helping others, but we don’t have billions to give if we cannot provide for the American people.

      • That’s a joke I only get 13.00…am very hungry and this is totally disgusting…I’m American…worked my whole life and because im.not working right now. And get 272.00 a week on unemployment….im.barely living…

My husband and I both have cancer, TX has decided we inly need $122 a month for food stamps, I am fully disabled and Social Security says my husband who has Stage 4 Cancer only gets SSI, between the 2 of us we live on less than 10k a YEAR. I know others who are fully capable of working but do not and get over $600 a month in food stamps, and don’t even get me started on the illegals coming over here having 3 or 6 kids and the moms saying I don’t know where baby daddy is and get over 2k a month in food stamps, free housing, free child care, and whatever else they can get but yet that baby daddy working somewhere getting paid under the table making 2 to 3 k a month or more and Americans who worked their butts off from 16 till whenever paid all that money into the govt and we are the ones who go hungry and homeless, call me a racist and I will invite you to my door to say it to my face. There are people who come here and start their own business and do not pay taxes for first 7 years and still get food stamps and free housing so again tell me why we as Americans who have busted a$$ working all of our lives be the ones to do without? My mom is 72 a widow and can’t get food stamps, but when my dad was alive omg they got a whole $16 dollars a month in food stamps. Oh and my mom and I are both Type 2 Diabetics, we can’t eat healthy be healthy with what little we get. How are we supposed to survive on what little we get from SS and then next to nothing or nothing in food stamps?

there are programs where you can get more SNAP benefits based on your health-if you have special diet requirements based on your health. your dr needs to fill out paperwork, and your husbands drs too….
is there some kind of infoline in your state? also-contact the local govt in your town-sometimes there are funds/programs available thru your local govt that arent advertised….

I worked week ends and holidays without the benefits of overtime or holiday pay. Refugees, The Invaders, Illegals and the LAZY are being given what should belong to those of us who broke our backs making a home, food, medical care, schooling, taxes. Nobody gave us a damn thing except bills in our mailbox. I feel 100% like you and so do millions of other people. I’m furious seeing people in a checkout line, 4-5 kids hanging on the grocery cart, snott and dirty clothes, with boxes of cereal, junk food, frozen dinners for the kids while mama getting steak and lobster for her and whoever she hooks up with that day.

      • Wow, what judgement. People don’t decide if will live off fat of the land. With 5 children, could u imagine the cost of childcare? Even if u are from another planet, if u have children. We should feed. Ever sit at public assistance office for up to 4 to 5 hours w child in tow. And treated less than human. I am retired n pay taxes n get 23 in fstamps which ends with COLA. No sec 8 or senior, disabled home. Am disabled. People from other countries should be allowed to work and pay taxes, as they await citizenship. U should see living conditions of the poor.

    • Hello, Gypsy…you are 1000% right! How dare the government say they’re cutting food stamp allotments to those who had an increase in SS benefits, I mean that money that my mom receives pays for all the bills and there’s absolutely nothing left for her to buy herself food! Even our Section 8 voucher program was raised $200 more on our rent so how are we supposed to afford food? I work part time as a nurse and my money goes toward my bills plus whatever I can help my mother pay, so I don’t have enough either in food stamps, especially since our diets are different so I hope the new congress as of 2023 makes better decisions for the benefits of us AMERICANS and excuse me for saying this but…to hell with the illegals that are coming here, taking everything from us and ruining our country! None of them look like they were starving coming over the border but that’s another time for another conversation, so all I’ll say is that they must’ve been eating pretty damn good in their poorer countries and they’re getting $2,000 in benefits?! Unbelievable! I wish you the best for you and your family!

  8. It’s really disgraceful how they don’t clearly explain that in many if not most states, for those over 60 or disabled, if their income is below 200% of the federal poverty level then they have no maximum asset limit for SNAP. As far as I know from researching it today, the only US state where that’s clearly stated in plain English on their SNAP website is California. Because of that, I missed out on 7 years of SNAP and a $9.95 a month internet plan that I was paying full price for and lost around $7,500 or more in benefits over that time period, including the $250 minimum monthly benefit most single people got during the pandemic (it was discontinued in my state) until I finally figured it out today.

    Reply
    • And my full price internet plan was $75 a month including renting a modem that’s free with the $9.95 a month plan. That’s something people should keep in mind when they don’t get a lot in food stamps, that you can get discounts on internet service, 1/2 price Amazon Prime membership, etc.

        • If you have a foodshare card you automatically qualify for Prime at half price.I been paying half price for over a year and it’s a godsend.Especially when it’s, at times, very difficult to get out due to mobility issues. Also, check on the free trial for WalMart Plus.(free shipping directly to your door & curbside pickup are most convenient!) It’s only 30 days but EVERYTHING and ANYTHING that can help nowadays! Also, in some areas, Medicare Advantage Plans help with “Healthy Food” and “OTC” Benefits so definitely look into those. In my area, if you go to the local Aging & Disability Resource Center(ADRC) and set up an appt. they can go over EVERY little thing you qualify for and again, nowadays ANYTHING HELPS!Good luck & hope this helps some as well as finds you safe and healthy!

        • You have to sign up your SNAP card on their membership page. Once they send you a verification for your PIN number, they’ll cut your Prime membership in half and also you can then use your card for eligible SNAP items!!

    • I’m a retired Social Worker, CSW. On food stamps now because stuff happens. :(. I used to help people apply for benefits. It was an unfair mess back then – much worse now. Even the convoluted application process is difficult for a lot of people with very limited resources and little ability to self advocate. I got mail saying I was dropped from the program because I missed an interview call, spent hours and hours on hold with DHS trying to reschedule it (I’d sent the redetermination form with all sorts of scanned required document in on time) because of a massive red tape call center overload mess on their end. I sent emails to state and local offices, and finally got the (unscheduled) call. I was in the bathroom and had to scramble frantically to get to the phone just in time. Easy to understand what happened to people who don’t have a working cell phone, or are unable to get on a (VERY buggy and complicated) computer website, or figure out how to send scanned documents, etc.. Soon they’ll be ending the pandemic SNAP payments, which actually helped, and I’ll be back down to about enough to buy 4 days worth of cheap food again, anyway. They ostensibly make it all so difficult to avoid fraud, we get that, but all Social Workers also know that feeding poor people and getting disabled people adequate support, etc., etc., isn’t anyone’s top campaign slogan. It’s hard and unfair on purpose. The elderly get hit hardest. Bad stuff isn’t supposed to happen to us if we worked hard. It does though, even in a blue, blue state like mine.

      • Well me and my wife only receive $53 a month on our Food Stamps this a load of ! How in the hell are we supposed to make it on that! Yet illegals are over here drawing $600 to $700 a month or more because they keep popping out children! I’m not saying people/children shouldn’t eat but they are over here illegally and didn’t pay into the system like the rest of us has! And they’re able to draw more in FS then most of us are! So me and my wife go hungry alot of times because we no longer have children so why are we being punished! And they wonder why most Americans despise illegals it’s nothing to do with being racist it’s because of this ! And no wonder why American Parents have resorted to stealing they have to worry about feeding their families while illegals get to eat high on the hog! There’s a special place in hell for these agencies doing this to us!

        • The fact that you are applying for or receiving SNAP has no bearing on your immigration status. You sound ignorant and need to do some reasarch before you post incorrect, hate-filled messages. Every individual has to comply and meet the programs criteria. So if someone is getting more food stamps than you are receiving, then they are in need of more assistance. Then you justify theft as if it’s ok or not as worse than someone receiving more assistance. It’s people like you that’s serperating and tearing down this country.
WAKE UP AMERICA and change the ignorant.

        • What a narrow minded response. I wonder why you ONLY receive $53 a month. Guess you should be an illegal then. Do you research before you write or speak.

        • No foreigner should be helped above any American citizen. If foreigners want to become American citizens they need to do it the proper legal way. Correct me if im wrong but it takes 7 years for a foreigner to become an American citizen. Just walking across the southern border doesn’t give any person the rights that home born Americans get to have. Your right my fellow American, you and your wife should be the ones get the $600-$700 a month for food.

        • I see your points very clearly. I wish that I had an answer for you. It has really gotten to the point that skipping a meal everyday and being so careful at the supermarket. I myself have a specific diet that I need to follow. It’s either follow the diet or, be in a lot of pain.

        • Don’t you dare speak for me. I get $40 a month in food stamps, can’t afford anything. I get a whole $800 in disability benefits each month. I usually have about $40 left after I pay my bills. For the month. But I’m not so low, so fucking selfish and racist as to say it’s because of immigrants. It’s because politicians don’t give a shit about poor people. Blaming immigrants is the oldest, lamest, most ignorant response ever. Take a look in the mirror, you suck.

        • I agree. it’s disgusting there taking away all of our food stamps who can live on $23 a month we can’t get out and work if we’re disabled this country has went to shit excuse my French I don’t understand how they can sit back and let this happen as it is people worry do I pay my rent or eat this month and now they’re gonna do this . How can they sleep at night?

        • You realize that a social security number is required to get assistance, right? Illegals don’t have social security numbers, so how are they getting all this assistance you claim they’re getting??

        • I get 1196 dollars on disability I got a raise. I was getting 1101 dollars with the raise me and my wife are disabled she has applied for disability now we got 279 in food stamps now it dropped to 179 that’s took a 100 dollars off food stamps and my raise is only 95 dollar how you take any 100 away and give me 95 back and inflation food everything has gone up but they don’t go up on income for food stamps they taking away more than the raise and still do no changes to food stamps and now we worse than we was wow government got there raises but we get a raise and they taking all our benefits we need to protest this cause if there is any conspiracy its in the government look at all presidents vice presidents they all in trouble now they crooked we need to protest about it it’s wrong and to my utility company try to steal my stimulus money for power I confronted theme they said you don’t go by your power bill I said what since I was a kid my mom went by the power bill I said I’ve never heard such and 2weeks later they put the stimulus money back on my power bill now I cought theme stilling stimulus money so I didn’t go any further I was going to go to low income help for power gas called that help pay power and heat lihmp but I didn’t I should have tell me something have you ever heard that you don’t go by your power bill me either now Biden gave the governor in your state permission to give more stimulus to help governor McMaster in south Carolina said no when other governor states gave stimulus money now inflation went up 4 times higher I never thought I never see eggs 25 dollars ham 8 something something got to be done now if your husband get SSDI and wife gets ssi your wife don’t get the 914 ssi payment she gets only 195 dollars how in the hell you get that.

      • Try $23 a month!!! With the prices of food nowadays we seniors will be starving! This is when we should be living our best lives but we can’t. This new Congress is just as bad as the old one! Why is it they always want to cut Social Security and Medicare, when they don’t have to worry they’ll get paid regardless. I’d love to see some of these social workers when they retire!

        Reply
        • $23 is the minimum SNAP payment (for 1 or 2 person households) and I agree is way too little to live on. Equivalent to 5 basic coffee’s at Starbucks

    • 7/25/22 If only the comments on this site could be sent to EVERY Congressperson & Pres Biden & VP Harris with the assurance they would actually READ THEM. The ppl who make the laws are ALL WEALTHY & are waaaaay out of touch with most Americans. From my perspective, MOST Americans are actually very low income, very poor or in actual
poverty. IMO, 90% of America’s problems are based upon unacceptably low wages & unbridled capitalism & corporate greed. most ppl live “hand to mouth.” Due to substandard wages, 1 emergency can destroy both single ppl & familirs – in spite of both adults working! If ppl had a MONTHLY LIVING WAGE INCOME ($30/HR MINIMIM WAGE!!!) & there was also a mandatory MONTHLY BASIC UNIVERSAL INCOME in place ($2500-$3000/mo) for those who temporarily can’t work & rents/mortgages were fixed to be at no more than 30% for 2 or more who make less than $80,000/yr & a single person who makes less than $40,000/yr … maybe ppl could sleep at night without a black cloud constantly over them & actually enjoy life!
And don’t get me started on the cruel joke known as Soc Sec – SSD or SSR. Americans should get the HIGHEST WAGE THEY EVER MADE AS THEIR MONTHLY BENEFIT or the BASIC UNIVERSAL INCOME AMOUNT – whichever is greater! America is the only country I’m aware of that punishes it’s chronically I’ll & disabled (SSD recipients 18-65) & it’s senior retirees ( SSR recipients 66-100+). I’ve known so many Americans who were middle class when working & then went right into instant poverty the minute they got their very FIRST Social Security check! MY wealthy aunt & uncle were such persons & my middle class parents also were subjected to this. Since 1999, I am also such a perso.. NOT HAPPY! I’ve been forced to avail myself of EVERY possible social aid: a tax credit apt where I only pay 30% of my income towards rent,(Section 8 Program is dead in CA), Medi-Cal as my secondary payer & of course SNAP. The only way I can barely make ends meet is to BORROW MONEY from a payday loan place EVERY MONTH! In CA the limit is only $255 per month.
Not enough!! If I could borrow up to $500 EVERY MONTH, I’d have money left over for the many many things that I’ve had to neglect & let go that need fixed or repairing. I could SAVE for emergencies & maybe have some money to go out & have a little fun. You know, like normal ppl who are lucky enough to have a living wage income! And … I could actually sleep at night without so much financial STRESS! IMO, since 2003, America has become a country only for the wealthy.

We can’t get food stamps or Medicaid BECAUSE WE’RE MARRIED…..We make $500 too much a year. But if we were separated we could EVERYTHING….We have been married for 40 years and thinks it’s wrong to treat us like that but the girl who gets pregnant out of wedlock has the Government kissing her ass and she gets anything she wants…Do you think something is wrong here

        Reply
        • Now this is what makes me angry. Just because you are married should not be a reason to punish you! Just say that a single person earns 1, 500 a month and gets 100$ a month for food. Then a married couple earning 3,000 a month should get 200$ for food. These are just figures I pulled out of my head. The point is that married people should be able to get double than a single person does if they make the same money. I hope I have made my point.

      • The sad truth is politicians really do not care about their constituents. It has always been about enriching themselves. As far as illegal migrants go…I do not fault any looking for a better life if that is truly the case. With the border wide open you just have to follow the money. Does anyone really believe that individuals in our government are not also making money on this as well as the cartels?
If many in power were not profiting from this it would not be happening. As for the average amercan

I’ve changed from my liberal ways. The world has changed. If we can’t take care of our elderly and sick, we shouldn’t be giving handouts to others coming into this country. I never received or took handouts until I was homeless. AND I worked and paid into social security, so it’s not a handout. I worked through many health issues, when others wouldn’t have. The emergency food allotment was a blessing. Now, it will be cut and I’ll receive a whole $16/mo or so. The increase in cost of EVERYTHING has increased and the COLA has not even come close to catching up!! I don’t do anything or go anywhere. People don’t understand when they suggest I do things for my health, that almost everything costs money. It gets very depressing. I don’t like to complain. I know many have it worse. I pray for everyone struggling here.

        • Hello there. If your income is too high to get any help it sounds like you need to decrease your bills. A person can down size and live on alot less than you think. Modern conveniences like cable tv…internet and cell phones can be done away with and this will reduce your monthly expenses but may not be as fun. I was in the same situation. Once I sat down and figured up my bills I realized that I was living above my means with the prices going up. I also had a friend who was also struggling move in with us and she helps with bills. It is not my ideal way to live but things are getting bad and the main thing is food shelter and clothing for our families right now. Pull out those dvds and board games…spend more time as a family. Buy in bulk and cook meals at home instead of eating out. It sucks but its only going to get worse unfortunately.

        • Check out ACP programs for internet, tv, and phone I think xfinity is participating. If you are receiving snap you qualify. One less bill.

      • We should be going after these people in offices in government these peoples tell us there’s is not any money the United States have a lot of money, if they stop these peoples from steal money than everyone can live comfortably it not the snap benefits it these steal big politicians in offices why do you think they letting the rates going up and food so high they can stop this they want it seem to you even to pay these companies to bill your bills, and late charges car insurance you them all this money when you have an accident they don’t want to pay you, these the peoples we should be going after not the poor peoples who food stamps and financial aid they want force these things, not the billionaires that sent all money over sea to banks, let poor peoples along go after big who really take from us,

Andy, the 15% is not part of Stimulus Package, it’s due biden signing an executive order in which he adds along with 15%., that Americans have the right to retain their food assistance benefits if they refuse a job opportunity that carries a risk to their health. It contains additional assistance measures aimed at military veterans and calls for the establishment of an interagency structure to coordinate benefit programs for Americans in need.

      • Have you looked into the Medicare Savings Program? All states have access to it. Under that the state pays for your Medicare Premium. There are income and asset requirements for it though. States also all do tend to have a Share of Cost program to access Medicaid as well. You should also apply for Extra Help for your prescriptions, that would greatly help. The income and asset requirements are higher for that program so it would be easier to get. Also for the Medicare Savings Program, it is 3 months retroactive from the application, so you can get some of that money back.

I think its great that the government wants to support families. Lets not forget about seniors and disabled as well need help. Further, this has to be said it is very disrespectful and saddening to think that anyone besides a family should only get $16.00 a month food stamps!. This makes no sense and i ask you welfare, what is this helping??. A person must climb hills then mountains to get help and then $16.00 not enough to even provide help. Probably buy 3 things provided you don’t live in California. Why don’t people on low income and disability deserve some real help??. $40.00 a minth thats help!!. $16.00 a month is a smack in the face and very insulting!!. Thank you. bye.

        • Their friends are homeless too. A lot of them don’t have friends or family or both. Not that simple cut and dry. If they had friends and family they wouldn’t be that homeless what friend or family let their love one be homeless unless they have been arrested or doing drugs. Like I said not that cut and dry.

      • No you don’t. Ex son-in-law was homeless off and on for 2,3 years and received $200 a month here in Kansas and last 3 years because he lost his ID they have paid for him an apt. and pay his utilities. He gets $200 in food stamps and they take him to pantries to get more food. All he has to do is report to them once a month. They were supposed to help him get his ID so he could work or apply for disability.

  24. Senior citizens only getting $16.00 a month, it is a disgrace. We should be getting at $100.00 a month, so we could buy more nutritious meals

    • I did appreciate the extra food stamp money, I only get 17.00 a month and never was able to buy meat or fresh veg. until my benefit was increased , my widows benefits is well below the poverty level. Now they stopped the extra benefit and I will have to find a food bank to go to. I am 70 years old and scared to get out in the public because of the virus. I hope the state of MS can see a way to help the elderly get the benefits we need.

    • It has been so nice receiving $194 a month for food stamps instead of $16 mo… It is hard to believe that for most seniors like myself, $16 is all the government can spare. I am 75 years old and am renting a bedroom in m ex-husband’s house because I can’t afford an apartment of my own and I really shouldn’t be alone because I am on a walker and also am a fall risk. fortunately we stayed friends after the divorce in 1990 and became business partners from 1995 until 2009. He is letting me rent a bedroom for only $150 mo. with kitchen privileges. I thank God we are friends every day. I don’t know what I would do otherwise. I am thankful that I am not living under a bridge somewhere, and I have worked as a legal secretary, manager of an art gallery in Boca Raton, Florida, owned my own property management business for 15 years and now in my old age I am poor again. So many of us are having these issues and even much worse. We should all move to Japan where they honor their seniors and not throw them crumbs to eat.

      • When I first began to investigate why my benefit was going back to $16.00 a month I encountered confusing formulas hard to reach personnel to ask questions, or getting disconnected from chat and finally a hearing request which then prompted a call from a screener who checks to see if DCF made a mistake in their calculations if they did would they ever admit or fix it) I doubt it. It is done on purpose I believe, to have you so frustrated and tired that you simply give up and go away. There was a time in my life I would ever just give up, but now at 60 and having cancer four times I simply don’t have the stamina like I used to. I have SSDI and just recently was forced to take Medicare Part B and no I cannot get help for those premiums and SSDI is too much for me to qualify for various programs every time I try I hit a brick wall and am told you are not eligible. Like someone else said it comes down to deciding on your health or food. That is pretty sad.

  25. A promise is a promise Mr. Govenor. This increase really, really helped the seniors that only get around $42. a month. We don’t get a $600. check weekly. So this increase in April really gave us a chance to have real food instead of soup and crackers. Enjoy your steak and Lobster Mr. Governor.

    • I feel they give the wrong ones full benefits the people laying up having all the babies get hundreds and thousands of dollars snap and the seniors only get 15.00 to 16.00 to eat off we are the ones that have worked 30 and 40 years and 16.00 is all we get i think at least 75.00or 100.00 would be better, just think about it Mr Govenor

    • Lobster? What’s that? It used to be my go to dish when I was in my 30s. Now at 75 I haven’t had a lobster in I can’t remember how long. years and years. I can’t even afford to go to a restaurant any more! I really sucks to be a senior in this day and age with the average house selling for over $200k. and the average rent at around $1,200 mo. There is no way we could ever catch up with the economy. And it gets worse every year!

  26. snap food stamps taken away month of may in full because they added $600 stimulus weekly payments to income! What a letdown in these economic hard times of being unemployed with only $78 weekly + $600. cant get ahead in these trying times! Beware SNAP recipients. You will not qualify for food stamps wth the $600 weekly stimulus payment! This is not fair at all !!!!!

    • Your getting $2700 a month for not working and your complaining about not getting food stamps? If your reg unemployment is only $78 a week your making way more not working. There are a lot of people out there with way less than you. Count your blessings

      • Exactly ! Where do people like that come from. Wish I was getting $600 week. I get $1300 month. Sometimes have to wait up to 32 days to get my next check. Worked my ass off for 40 years and now disabled and over 60 with no help from anyone ! No vehicle and pay $350 month rent and I know that I am better off than a lot of people in this world. People that have never even owned a pair of shoes and we are complaining. SPOILED AMERICANS….Congress could do more but they never do.

  28. Hello we are a family if 6 in Michigan. We receive SNAP benefits even before Covid-19. Their Father works full time and I’m self employed. 3 of our 4 children are (were) in school and therefore eat about 1/2 of their meals/food at school for free with the free/reduced lunch program. Since March 12th they have been home 24/7. Therefore are eating here more than they ever have, on top of the fact they are bored and eating more lol. So our weekly grocery shopping total has tripled. But luckily for us Lapeer Community schools has came together and is handing out lunches daily to all the kids (that receive free and reduced lunch) here in Lapeer County. And that’s parent teachers the National Guard volunteers. Passing food out In a drive thru like style. The unemployment!?! The stimulus checks?!?!? Wow we have been handed a lot and all for us to be able to survive!! This is
Exactly what needed to happen quit complaining it’s wasn’t fast enough and what About XXX like come on we are blessed to be America citizens!! Does that mean every decision that was made was the best made one?? No because our government is also human and FYI cannot see the future. I’m grateful for everything that everyone has done. Keep it up!!!

    • Yes I would. I’m 67 years old and making it on my own for more than 50 years . Making wise decisions in your life your life based on the circumstances will point you in the right direction . The rest up to you how much time energy and effort you want to spend to attain your goal. I never knew about food stamps or TAFNF or any of these things until I was in my 30’s then only because someone I knew applied. Truth be told I could hardly believe it.

  30. I receive social security disability each month. i was previously enrolled in the NJ Work ability program which informed me I could earn a certain amount of extra income per month and additionally was placed on Medicaid until age 65 which also paid my part B Medicare. My question pertains to NJ unemployment. I have been working part time and have never exceeded the monthly income by social security law, this income helps me with living expenses such as groceries, gasoline, part B medicare, auto repairs, etc. The office where I work has closed down due to the Corona-19 virus. I work for a temporary agency, hired for the office. I receive no other compensation from the temporary agency. I work 16 hours @ week @ $19 per hour netting approx $980 per month. Am I able to file for NJ unemployment due to the office shut down? Thank you.

    • HI Maria ;0

I am not sure about your state, but my Father lives in Colorado; he too is on social security, he is 70. He works one day a week and apparently he got the unemployment. I am also on ssi/ssd, I did not even know he could get unemployment while on ssi, but he did! So, while i cannot tell you Yes, I can say ‘my Father did’; check it into it!

      Peace

    • Listen closely ! Don’t let them fool you…. This is a time of crisis with Covid 19. You should apply for Federal unemployment. Not just state. Trust me, I know. After Katrina wiped me out. I talked with a lady from FEMA in D.C. and she told me that during emergencies in your state or area. If you lose your job you can receive Federal unemployment as well as state. I did not qualify for Federal only because I was getting major FEMA assistance of $1,700 a month for food and living expenses.
